Line of the day – ‘Wine & Spirit is smoking some seriously good ganga if they think it’s a 92’

Great to see the quick-fire tasting method GV would use if he were tasting with a view to buying for the store. Interesting.

Agreed, now that you commented, It looked kind of cold hearted and fast-foodish?

  • Charlotte K. Jensen

Do they make wine in Thailand?

  • Ha, I’m in Koh Samui too right now! Originally live in Chicago, but here doing muay thai for a bit.

I agree with drt999. You have to try different things to keep the show fresh and keep al the viewers and yourself from getting stale. It was interesting to see you tasting more like you do for store buying.

Was it a great new format…no. Was it a successful show…yes, because we all learned something (even if it was only that many dislike the format). Keep doing what you’re doing, working on the show, and trying new things every now and then.

I don’t think trying out new formats is anything you should be sorry for.

  • thnx pal, and I get it

  • NEVER AGAIN! Sorry to let you down Vayniacs 🙁

It sounds like you didn’t get much sleep last night with all the Vayniacs giving you a hard time

Assembly line Gary! Auto-ma-tion. That was fun. or funny. Actually, you are correct – when tasting at a wine buying or competition, you gotta keep moving. Suggest 3 different wine glasses to make it move faster. smile. wink. I did like you rapidly tasting and then you can go into the wines with some knowledge and fore-thought.
never had Aglianico – got to find that somewhere.

  • EricD

I’d like the format if you were actually showing us a tasting you were using to decide which wine to buy for the store, but otherwise I think it is a little to hectic.

When you taste wine that quickly, are you able to articulate all of the flavors you get on the palate/bouquet, or do you generally just get an idea of the types of flavors you taste (i.e. red fruit, herbs, green vegetables)?

  • Anonymous

An herb that somehow causes wine and spirits to overscore a wine when it is smoked.

If you were to video an actual tasting for the store that would be an interesting behind the scenes glimpse. But this isn?t I viable WLTV format. I like variety. You can try any silly thing you want but don?t make it the format for future shows.

  • Whoa whoa whoa Gary. Way to spitfire and machine gun it at me. If anything I think the 5-8min shows for 1 wine is too little. Make it enjoyable and entertaining, not so fast foodish. Initially I was a big supporter of hitting the #1000 episode, but if I have to get force fed vin-education, I’d rather not try to satiate the #1000 goal. Where’s the old Gary?

  • I feel its a little too forced and don’t feel any passion in these spit-fire shows. I kinda got the feeling the last weeks shows were just being “mass produced” to get to 1000 quicker. I didn’t feel any connection with these wines at all. I like to know about the region they come from, a little history and some tidbits. This was just wham bam thank you ma’am with nothing really to offer. Sorry Gary.

This is exactly how I feel as well. Well said.

  • QOTD: Stop doing what you did today and it will be better lol.

Out of the new format experiments todays was by far the worse. I agree it seems a rush to 1000 now, lost some thunder this week. Again, why change what has worked for 980 episodes????? My g/f and I started watching because of the intensity and passion for wine and 3 wines in 6 minutes shows none of that, sorry GV, your still the man but I liked the old style a ton better.

  • QOTD: This episode was entertaining but I would do it randomly. I agree with some of the other comments that it is interesting to see how you pick the wines from a huge variety to put in the store. I am enjoying the under 10 minute shows because it fits my attention span and day.

QOTD: I was liking a greater mix of shorter (especially head to head and blind) shows, but this is really too much for an entertainment and education show. Not my favorite. But hey, Gary keep trying stuff and mixing it up. But this…well…next!

  • Gonna have to check out some Aglianico, I’ve never heard of it until today.

QOTD: You can refine this by BRINGING BACK THE LAID. BACK. COUCH! 🙂

QOTD: I aint refining shipt! I liked it. Keep it going.

IT’S A NEW DAY! ALL THIS IS BEHIND US AND WE MOVE ON! I FEEL THE “THUNDER” ROLLING AND A “LAID BACK FRIDAY” IS IN THE OFFING! HOOOAAAHHHH!!!!!! 😉

  • blue nun?

  • another feet came to day and now the thermometer is dropping like wine in a bottle handed out to Vaniacs

  • easy now Allan, we all know that you will. This is just a scheme to be No 1 on that one…..

But i reckon Mott and gary have plans for that ep, plans dude, plans…

  • QOTD: Pre-tasting allowed you to focus more effort (and our attention) on the winner. The loser (1st wine) got the shortest segment and I kinda ignored it. But that runs counter to a major goal of the show: develop your palette. If we ignore what makes “bad” wine bad and only focus on winners we don’t have our own taste – we’re just lemmings.

SHOW IDEA: As a retailer you could probably never do this…but it would be interesting to do a show about cheap, widely available wines with flaws. Having an experienced taster point out a problem area in a wine seems like it could be very useful in palette development (and if the’re cheap I am more likely to buy em and taste along).

Was it there when I commented or from some Johnny-come-lately? 😉

Oh, when it’s just me, my bottle of wine and a cheeseburger on the floor I even talk to my bottle sometimes 😉

Kinda felt like you waste my time when you taste silently. It isn’t too interesting to watch you sip wine and keep your thoughts to yourself. I do like to see your initial reaction to the wine though, so I like it better when you taste one at a time and talk about each. The quickness on each wine is fine – basic flavors and profile and score. I’d like to have seen a bit more background on the variety of grape and region though, as I’ve never heard of Aglianico.

So, maybe take 3 to 5 minutes talking about the general nature of the wines, the “nerd” info and what can be expected from them. (flavor, price, etc). Then maybe another 3 to 5 minutes tasting and reviewing them. That would keep it to 6-10 minutes. Honestly, I’ve got no problem with the longer shows. Mix it up! I’d worry less about making room for your charisma and football, as I think you’ll always work those in, even in a tight show.

Question of the day back at you: (Why, in the wine world, do they say “varietal” and not “variety”? Why not use the genus species even?)

I sat yesterday at a distributor’s tasting of 30 wines and did what you started at the beginning. This will lose most of the beginners and CKC’s quickly as it really teaches nothing about wine. You have to know it already to make any sense out of this format so I would recommend against it. It’s quick and dirty and that is what you do in the business but not for learning and certainly not for fun. That being said, Anglianico has always been on my radar as it goes great with chicken cacciatore and sausage, onions, and peppers.

QOTD – I don’t really enjoy the super rushed shows. When you do 3 wines in under 10 min it seems like your trying to get through them just to get through them and on to the next episode. When you rush you lose some of the crazy personality stuff that makes this show what it is.

  • Wow that is a interesting wine with a lot of history on it.

  • Anonymous

Don’t beat yourself up man! It was an interesting insight into (like you said) a day in the life. There are judging panels I have seen that move just as fast as that. That being said, as far as shows in general go more thunder, substance, your antics, whatever you want to call it, is necessary and more than sufficient.

  • Anonymous

Well said as always, I completely forgot he got the call from the wifey; that changes things a little.

As busy as GV is I can understand the desire to shorten the episodes, especially if he is taping 4-5 on a single day. If a show is going to be less than 10 minutes long though I think there should only be 1 to 2 wines tasted. I enjoy learing about the wines being tasted as much as the tasting itself.

  • Not a fan of this format. Not interesting for us to watch you taste wines without hearing your thoughts. The past few weeks were great–short and sweet but still full of info about the wines, regions, grapes, etc.

  • Anonymous

This episode felt like you were really phoning it in, it did not bring the thunder. Felt way too rushed. If you’re going to keep this 5~6 minute format, keep it to 1 wine, 2 max. Possibly 1 value wine and 1 wine that really encapsulates the region.

But honestly, I’m not a fan at all of this format.

  • Little rushed Gary. Couldn’t follow you at first. I like the short format with one or two wines. Grapenutz has a great idea with one value and one that really shows what a region is all about!

It was interesting to see how you pick wines to sell in WL, a day-in-the-life as you put it. In fact, more day-in-the-life stuff would be cool. However, this wasn’t really fun enough to be a frequent format. I can’t think of anything the show gains by doing a quick tasting first, unless it was off camera, the wines were left to breathe, and a comparison was done.

Also, you first scored the Petrale an 86, then said 88 and switched it to an 87. We get the point, but it seems like the “taste, then taste again” style could be disjointed.

  • Anonymous

I’m not sure you need to refine what you just did, Gary. Essentially you just did the show without us. I think it’s more informed when you include the audience in your first tasting instead of deciding without us. You might as well taste the wines off camera then just tell us in thirty seconds which one you picked. That would only take 30 seconds.

  • QOTD: consistently proper pronunciation of the (especially Italian) grape varietals 🙂

    Good, taut, episode.

And PLEASE, don’t ever be sorry EVER AGAIN”!!

  • The best way to refine that style would be to never do it again.

    Nice to see another varietal.
QOTD: Refine? Hmm. Not sure. A bit too manic for me. I am all for changing things up but that was just too much of a tornado for me. Still, thanks for the effort.

Aglianico is awesome. Thye Cinque Querce is indeed very nice. I love it. Besides that, I love everything from Campania, it’s a great wine region.

QOTD. No, I don’t love this. It’s to rushy and not enough talking about the wine.

  • There’s a million sources out there helping you differentiate good wines from not so good wines. I like the show because it is interesting and entertaining and I can usually learn something or at least laugh. Don’t keep this style.

  • ALLAN

Spicing it up for a Beer Episode are we? Cool, I Say!

  • I could really for a Friday Showing of WLTV!

What are your thoughts? It makes my work a little easier to swallow.
