91/100

Lines of the day – ‘Almost like a hot dog flavour mid-palate’ and ‘This wine is struggling to find itself much like the teenagers that Gaga sings for.’

Great show – amazing to watch just how accurate GV can be with these blind tastings. The guy is a genius.

    Word.

  • QOTD: Had an ’09 Bordeaux that did not excite me at all. It’s supposed to be an amazing vintage and granted it was not a top producer by any means, also it was young. But yeah, not good.

Don’t say you could be wrong Gary, It’s Your Palate, end of discussion.

Qotd: easy, Beringer Private Reserve 2001, RP 97, I think I rated it an almost 90 in my head, it was fading and fading fast.

  • I like that Mott zoomed in on the bag numbers as if they were labels. Not to mention, I’ve LOVED these recent blind tastings.

Also, blind tasting with friends as our pre-gaming? I think it would work wonders getting my fellow professional-early-20-somethings into wine like I am. Any thoughts on getting blind tastings to be fun for people who don’t care much about wine (yet)?

  • ALLAN

Sorry castello, I swear I won’t ever do it again *crosses legs, fingers and what have you* :)))

Nice with the Pinot, I have a Lachini sleeping downstairs, can’t wait to try it now.

As for the QOTD: Had the Clos de Sixte Lirac 2008 from Alain Jaume, usually love this producer, this wine should have hit me in the right spot but I found it thin, with no mid palate, just nothing interesting. It was recommended at the SAQ (the Quebec wine monopoly) read about it online, people were liking it but not me.

tell them its beer, if you are convincing enough they might buy it.

Great Show! I felt “The Thunder” was off the charts! Thanks! Great call on the Mt. Difficulty, you have to call them like they are. We wouldn’t expect it any other way. I just love it when you’re pushing the envelope. You continue to be “The Man”!

Decent show, too bad Mt. Difficulty tanked, but it did not seem to faze you today.

QOTD: Had a Pouilly Fume SB (I forget the producer, not the one Gary tried “yesterday”) last night. I think WS or WA rated it high 80’s or maybe even 90. Did not like it that much, in fact if I ordered it at a restaurant I might have sent it back.

QOTD: The last wine I tried that I saw some discrepancy with was the Clos Coutale Cahors that you tried on the show in episode 914. I found that in the stores and it didn’t blow me away even though you said that it was awesome. I chalk it up to a difference in palate, c’est la vie.

I hope that you’re around the store, Gary. I sent you a letter and am really anxious to hear what you think.

  • Too bad about your bad romance with Mount Difficulty.

QOTD: We recently had a blind tasting of 2007 Cyprus Shiraz with some buddies and the local Shiraz stand-bearer (Domaine Vlassides) placed fourth out of five. Not the result any of us expected. We were actually all very disappointed.

This Friday I’ll be testifying in Annapolis, Maryland (with others of course), to hopefully finally make wine shipping legal here.
If the law passes we’ll finally be able to order wine from the Wine Library, be able to get on mailing lists and everything else.

    Wish me luck!

respect for throwing out the “HATE” word…

  • Love the PINOTS!!!

QOTD: Ironically, the wine that comes to mind is the 2008 Oyster Bay Pinot you reviewed in #921 and gave 89pts… Found it locally, popped, poured, tasted, threw out the bottle.. YUK!!!

Castel Du Grand Vin 2007- I underrated it.

I haven’t gradutated yet to Pinot. Usually tastes sour and thin to me but at our west coast wine tasting the brown bags convinced me that it can be good.

qtod: 2008 Hundred Acre Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc Summer Dreams Napa Valley (USA, California, Napa Valley) 2/1/2010 mattjohnson_78 how do you rate this wine? 79 points
upon opening, it is very harsh as evidenced by the high alcohol. has almost zero typical attributes to sauvignon blanc, and as such, is almost undrinkable. however, after about 30-45 mins some of the alchol blows off and settles into a nice chardonnay-esq wine…go figure? it has to rate as a 79 as a sb and about 88 as something out of the typical cali buttered popcorn chardonnay realm. however, the qpr might be the greatest tragedy here. at $80 it is almost a criminal offense. i will not be purchasing this wine ever again! stick with what you know hundred acre!

  • Always appreciate and respect the brutal honesty, Gary.

QOTD We did a brown-bag Oregon Pinot tasting of 8 different top producers. One that I really did not like was the 2007 Domaine Drouhin Laurene Pinot Noir which was 92 pts. Robert Parker. It was just an 85 pt. wine for me – which is another way of saying “meh”

  • PUT YOUR PAWS UP!!!! πŸ™‚ Love the Gaga call out haha. I think she must be a secret Vayniak πŸ˜‰

As always, really appreciated Pinot Noir blind Show!! Been a fan to of Mt Difficulty, 05 comes to my mind, but pinots from NZ are less my cup of tea these days.
QOTD: Vieux Donjon ChΓ’teauneuf-du-Pape 2007 (WA95+ WS94 IWC94): last november, found it really muted, no charm, no dept and pretty thin aside Beaucastel 2007, Pegau 2007 and Vieux TΓ©lΓ©graphe 2007.

  • On the flip side, one of my favorite wines I’ve tasted in the last year was the 2007 Abeja Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is stunning. Incredible richness in the nose with heavy notes of coffee and lilies with an absolutely scrumptious weight and mouthfeel and a finish which just wouldn’t quit. I think Steven Tanzer was VERY conservative when he gave it 91 points. This is a wine that breaks the 95 point barrier for me – probably about a 98+ for me! I had it side by side with the Verite La Joie which Robert Parker rated 100 points and I actually enjoyed the Abeja more!

  • Lot of P’s
    Schizofrenic
Oh I bet that Gary would go after Gaga, wonder what the wife says then?
I wish I had so many wines to try at that pace.
QOTD Actually I never had a clunker that scored well with a critic. Hmm have I scored a wine much higher, …no. That make me think that I’m a conservative scorer or a really bad taster, or have a even palate, or just like all wines.
Nah, I have had some bad wines, sure, but they have never been scored high or scored at all to my knowledge. Chocolates on the other hand, but that’s a different story that you just have to find out yourself πŸ™‚

QOTD: Neil Ellis Groenekloof Sauvignon Blanc 2008 – 90-92 points by multiple reviewers. I showed this in a Sauv. Blanc blind tasting and it finished dead last by a mile to everyone in attendance.

Pinot note – I went to a wine dinner last night that featured Carlei wines (Australia) and was loving their Pinot. Their Tre Bianchi was lights out too (Sauv Blanc, Semillon. and Chard. blend) Definatley recommend them if you can find them.

  • Yes, let them taste very different grapes/wines, that will expand something. I tried that with friends and they actually liked it so much that they are now really into wine. Remember not to be to much of fact pusher, give it a more of a Gary twist, what does it smell like, what’s that taste…every palate is different

qotd: There was a large group that came in to where I work headed up by a guy in the wine business and some of his guests were in the business as well. I brought in Panther Creek Pinot Noir NV at his request as a red to be served at the gathering. Now I have had some Panther Creek wines before that I thought were fine for the price. But I tasted that one later that night, and I didn’t understand how he could be so excited about it.

  • GV,
Thx for another episode, 8 to go.

    I luv them blind bags.
Question: What wine geru is on a Roll? hmmmmm

    You Are!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks Again

Poor Brandon indeed, at least the NZ wine maker is unlikely to show up. . . .

QOTD — I know there have been more than a few wines we’ve been 3-5 points off, but nothing pops to mind.

Wow tough question… for me it would have to be the 2005 Havens Wine Cellars Bourriquot. I know all the Cindies / Bourriquot sluts loved it but to me the nose was way over the top. I love barn yard funk but this was straight pig #&*%. Maybe it was the bottle or my mood. I should have tried a second one perhaps.

  • QOTD:
    Wine Surprise.
I bought the 2006 Patrick Lesec Bargeton Chateauneuf Du Pape in a $99 (3) pack of wine last year. So this past Saturday Night while sipping a Hall 2006 Cabernet, which is one of my favorites, I decided to expand my palette. I pushed the Hall to the side and popped open the Chateauneuf Du Pape. ** Note I never tasted a Chateauneuf Du Pape wine before.

So sniffy sniff and away I went. WOWY OH WOW, blow my head off!!!!!!
I have many french wines but nothing, nothing compared to this.
What a smooth velvety delious wine. It blew away the Hall Cab,
To boot I got this bottle came in a WL (3) pack for $99, you can make it up
    Thank You for this experience..

I has a similar experience with a Lewis Cab back in 2004, I didn’t konw what I had and it also blew my head off.

I also see you now have the 2007 Patrick Lesec Bargeton Chateauneuf Du Pape at a discount to the 2006, shhhh keep it on the hush.

QOTD: Going all the way back to 1983 Pinchon LaLande de la Comtese. Parker gave it a 91-93 and I was first into buying Bordeaux at that time. I remember paying $22/bottle which in 1985 wasn’t cheap but still a value for a potential 93pt Bordeaux. Talk about a schizophrenic (?) case of wine. First bottle, good potential but drunk too young. Second bottle, nothing. That case went back ands forth like that for 12 years nevere getting past the teasing potential stage IMO. More recently, you rated the 2003 Saintmay 90 or 90+. I have had 4 of the 6 bottles I bought over the years and, for my palate, it never got above an 84. I think the reason is that I just don’t like green as much as you do. That’s why it’s SO important to listen to the review rather than just the score.

  • Good show. This has been a good week, but I’m curious as to why all of the sudden I’m not getting emails about the shows being posted.

QOTD: I had one just the other night. Having dinner with a friend that was raving about the Fidelitas Cab Franc (forgive me but I can’t remember the vintage). It was straight up awful. Nothing else to say.

  • Who is this Melabi you speak of? Are you calling me by another woman’s name…again? Jeez why don’t you call out Melabi next time we are in…..

Thanks for the heads up! Loved the 2005. Almost loved the 2006 and probably would have bought the 2008 at the right price.
