I think all the interesting information got a bit lost in Tim’s relentless advertising of his new product. GV was desperately trying to broaden the discussion but most of the time Mr Mondavi brought it back to Continuum – (hell he didn’t even let his daughter get a word in edgeways). Shame because obviously there’s a wealth of experience and history that could have made an even better show. I wanted to hear a bit more of what Carrisa had to say. Let’s hope the wine doesn’t suck in part two !

  • Looking forward to Part II!

I also have to agree with what some of the others here have said that there’s a lot of interrupting going on on both sides, and while I am sure that Tim is a nice guy and his wines are probably nice, he seems to be pitching them a little too much. It will be interesting to hear what you think about his wines Gary.

Looking forward to the 1000th episode! Hey, how about you and your father try a $1000 bottle of wine? That would definitely be interesting.

Some really interesting stuff. Hats off to Tim for taking his daughter onto the show….has she always been ubale to speak, or was it as a result of an accident.

  • Tim has spent his whole life MAKING wine. He is at the top of the food chain in the wine industry and he has paid his dues and earned his place. This is why he’s doing the talking. He should be doing it. Very compelling. Where else do we get characters who say that vitality in a wine comes from something else besides acidity. Tim’s is a valuable viewpoint and I thank you Gary for letting him riff!

  • Because the maker says their product is about quality means they must be trying to pull the wool over our eyes? Very cynical mgm. But the proof is in the pudding. Tomorrow, we’ll see if he walks the walk like he talks the talk at least for Gary’s palate.

Tim comes off as a little arrogant. We all know you grew up with wine, but some humility goes a long way. Why did you even bring your daughter?

  • Tony Tombstone

I could watch these type of shows all the time. This is the type of information that truly gives perspective to how Napa became Napa. Hope his wines blow you away or as my 9 year old daughter would say…awkweird. QOTD :Can Tim let his daughter get a word in edgewise…not much of a gentleman.

Why did Tim bring his daughter? I felt sorry for her. Tim kept cutting her off. On the other hand, Tim is an interesting chap and I did learn a great deal. Thanks for having them on and I’m looking forward to Part Two.

Well, I’ve got a great bridge to sell ya if that’s the case.

c’mon lurker. I’m sure you don’t tune in to see an extended wine infomercial. All I’m saying is that I’d rather see knowledgeable people talking about wine and related experiences and tasting wine and critiquing it.

Rule #1 in advertising is don’t star in your own commercial. How classy are car salesmen tellin you to “come on down” during the local evening spots on TV? The self testimonial is second rate form of advertising, and not something that is commonly done with high end products. If some guy with a ridiculous aging-hippie quaff want’s to sell me wine for $135 a bottle, I think I’ll seek out some other people’s opinions first.

  • no,you are being very conservative, and yes you should watch the episode again so you can see how terrified his daughter is to say anything without looking after every word if what she’s saying is ok…

HA! Great edit point. These seem like some good peeps, from an iconic background, and I look forward to Part 2 (and possibly part 3 at this rate).

  • Amazing amazing amazing
I love guests and their interesting backbround stories, thanks Gary and thanks Tim and Carissa…
I’m really looking forward for part 2 and the tasting part

Ok Dave, chill! Just a bit of fun, no harm meant to the guy. I personally loved this monologue, great info delivered with passion and sincerity. I’m pretty sure this comments page is meant for a bit of light hearted fun. Take the comments the way they are intended, be true to your name and be Cool……Dave!
    Peace

Good show but I agree that TM is cutting off his daughter.
I liked the moment you talked about the ratings, criticising them. Gary, why don’t you stop rating wines? Wouldn’t that be a great change?
Don’t you think we should only follow our palate?

Hello everybody and welcome to Wine Library TV. I am your host Tim Mon – da – vi and this my friends is the Thunder show, aka, the internet’s most passionate wine program. Today, I have two special guests: my daughter Carrisa and Gary Vaynerchuk.

  • Great episode, Gary. Can’t wait for part 2. And unlike everyone else, I don’t think Tim was being rude … I think he’s just really passionate and knowledgeable and he’s one of those guys (like Gary) that has so much in his head bursting to get out that he just can’t help himself. Carrisa seems like a lovely woman and all, but I’m glad to hear Tim’s thoughts as I always thought he was very intelligent, creative guy somewhat overshadowed by his dad and brother. I like getting his thoughts on the state of California wine and his own project, especially his thoughts on the business challenge launching a “cult” wine during an economic downturn. Hope the next few shows are just as strong !

Would like to hear from the younger generation more, what will be happening going forward.

Great to hear Tim Mondavi and his daughter (hope she talks a bit more in part II).
Great episode…but not convinced to buy a $150 wine doh, way over my budget ๐Ÿ™‚

Hey Gary and guests, I did really enjoy the show with all the history. I have two bottles of 04 Mondavi Private Reserve that I bought because it was the last vintage that the Mondavi family had control of the operation.

WOW Matt, Is this sales angst or salesman envy? Which is it? How else is a producer/winemaker supposed to promote his or her product. You can’t just go on the word of mouth and taste alone. You have to self promote. How do you think Gary and Tim got to be where they are today. Yes they had fathers that paved the way, but you can’t sit and do nothing. It is all about the hustle. Gary is providing the platform and Tim has taken Gary up on promoting his product in the medium given.

It’s all about the price tag isn’t it? $150 is steep in this economy and we all know your stance on your QPR and that’s fine. I also prefer the $10 to $40 range (finding that gem for the lowest cost) as my go too price points, as I’m sure most people in America. Just don’t bash the man for being passionate about what he does.

Thanks for being passionate about what you do also Matt. I enjoy reading your prose each and every episode. ๐Ÿ˜‰

blah blah blah blah blah blah…………….i will say that the wine is excellent. it is one of the few cali cabs i am drinking. its so big though. the two wines that they are going to try are going to need YEARS to settle down……….just sayin’

    Sorry NW….Grumpy day yesterday.

I still see a distinct difference between the hustle and hard work to spread your product and being irrationally optimistic and superficially proud of it. I’m not really bashing anyone, I just don’t enjoy the “buy my wine” episodes as much. I do like hearing these guys stories to understand where they’re coming from. And, sometimes they turn out to be cool interesting people. More often than not though, when they show up with a load of their own product, it just doesn’t end up that way. I think this episode would be way better if the Mondavis showed up without wine, helped Gary taste some off his shelves, got tipsy and told Napa stories.

Did she say “Lang Gerhard”? Is that the Lang Garhard who was a Phi Tau at Miami (Ohio) in 1967?

  • Anonymous

    …is he still talking?

  • Anonymous

Interesting episode but my goodness does Tim talk too much. Pass the torch to your daughter and give her some air time. I think he’s actually more talkative than GV which the world has never seen before.

Extremely elegant sweet fruit (not Molly-sweet though), Raspberry/cranberry. Reveals boot-leather, liqourice, melted asphalt, coffee, hints of pepper. Good lenght, good balance, But i’m left a little short on something, which I can’t quite put the finger on. Soul?
Just made that up on spot, hehe,! ๐Ÿ™‚
I feel sorry for australia, The MollyDooker phenomenon has done more harm than good, the way I see it. Not that this wine has ANYTHING TO DO with MollyD. This doesn’t FEEL manufactured AT ALL! But a bit flat, well to me anyhow. 88p. and a bit of a dissapointment. Gevry tomorrow, YEEEEEHAAAAAWWWWWWW!!!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰ CHEERSSS!!!

Thank You Tim, and Carissa! Hearing such a great, historied name speak family and personal legacy is very engaging. Looking forward to part 2!
Oakville Cab, and the rarely seen SLD Cab were my favorites of the winery for many years. Continuum’s a long way from the Fume Blanc and Robert Mondavi Winery White Zin (!), which was a huge pour at my job, in the mid ’80s.

Winemakers need to be asking themselves, How do I get SOUL into my wine…

  • Anonymous

And I’m glad she mentioned Sena, and Luce/Lucente. Late in the game, it got to be such a broad , practically unwieldy portfolio, and some very nice wines were falling through the cracks. (I was watching, though – was way into several of the La Famiglia wines, the Byrons, etc.) Even Vichon, & Bocce, Caliterra lines offered varying styles of value, and I’d seek those I felt strongest about , in order to support the good work.

Interesting insight in this first half we’ll see where it goes!

Post part 2 already, we know you’ve already recorded it !

SOUL comes only without commercial interest ? ? ?

I have seen many an artist friend, struggling to afford paints alone, ( and then, struggle more, to stretch those meager resources with water, alcohol (ever present with artists!), spit, urine… never mind canvases, wood, frames,, stretchers, gas, materials, and whatever other media, such as metals, resin, etc. Yea, it often takes a good deal of money to make art. But many clever and creative minds engineer, and finagle their way out of that corner, also. Usually with the help of cheap beer. How uncouth!

From what I remeber Tim was in sales at Mondavi and his brother was in the cellar and boy does it show. Tim knows the valley and is very passionate and tells a good story. He’s a natural. It was funny seeing Gary try to sneak in a comment in between Tim’s mild mannered and detailed view of history and the Mondavi story in particular. Although I felt as though his daughter was under utilized, he’s the one with the vast experience….one day she and her brothers will be handed the banner (and the microphone). He’s the one to give the brand it’s context within Napa and connect it to the Mondavi legacy (and persuade people $150.00 bottle of wine is a bargain!) Too bad his gesticulating obscured his face from time to time. That said I picked up a few hand gestures from him that I hope to incorporate in sales meetings.
