  • But most of all its discovery types of wine (region/varietal) that you have given me not specific wines.

    And for that Thx.

    Sancerres do bring it.

    qotd; Impossible,countless wines you recommended I liked,thanks.

  • Answer to the question of the day: 2006 Alamos Seleccion Malbec

Cost effective and delicious. Keep up the great work. Here’s to another thousand episodes 🙂

Alright you SOBs I’m getting back in the race! 😉

Qotd: sadly none because i could never seem to find a specific wine you reviewed in the wine stores in college station 🙁 blame texas wine shops and not me please

  • You’re twice as lucky as me. I have one. Will wait a good long while on it, if I can!

Have 3 2004’s left. not quite as good but..and just ordered 6 of the 2005 as
    few minutes ago.

I had the Chateau Dereszela dry Tokaji when I was in my obscure wine phase, and it pushed my palate way out into new lands, which was awesome.

    Thank you.

  • Gobi

QOTD : AN – Anima Negra bar none…. also, Miquelangel the winemaker is an awsome person… maybe even more so than Gary!! Ok maybe at the same level 😀

Qotd:My two favs are Chateau Beausejour 04 and Saint Jean Du Barroux 03 bolth are still ripping my face off.

  • Not sure it’s the “best” wine I learned of through this show, but my favorite is the 2005 Volta Cabernet Sauvignon from LifeWines. A small 2 person operation run by two great guys, and their debut vintage knocked it out of the park. I bought a three pack from them solely based on Gary’s enthusiasm in episode 580, and it was just phenomenal stuff. Bought some of their 07 release as well. Not only is it great wine, but I like supporting some folk who are doing it honestly and for the right reasons.

It’s a little pricey but very good. Episode 966!

QOTD: Wow…you have me feeling slightly narcissistic here…but it has to be Teachworth (Episode #425)

  • Anonymous

2004 Haut Brisson in reds, and in whites it was the 2005 Reinhold Haart Riesling (I had to dig out episode 169 for that one!).

GV, I share your sentiments on white wine, now please don’t tell anyone else.

QOTD: The Crios Torrentes was a revelation, never would have bought it without your review. Next up, in the cellar I have a ’07 Chinon that I picked up on your props and a ’98 Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Rose that is just asking for it. But I wait. Maria herself said it was a ‘winter’ rose. Maybe next winter.

Looking forward to WLTV1K, great work.

  • Almost to 1000! And looks like you’ve got a little Hoff chest hair action going on in this episode, Gary! Interesting call there.

I haven’t had a Sancerre, but hopefully one day soon.

QOTD: Crios de Susana Balbo Torrontes 2009. I think that’s they only wine I’ve been able to try so far, based on your recommendation but I wasn’t disappointed. It went perfectly with fajitas!

Great show Gary. I find it very interesting when an aromatically challenged wine brings the thunder when you drink it. QOTD: the 04 Il Poggione Brunello from episode #752. Show me your finest silk!

  • Beautifully simple show.

QoTD: 2005 L’hiver Syrah. Beautiful, clean fruit. Refined Blueberry balanced wonderfully with gaminess.

Good episode, have tried a few Sancerre’s but remain a fan of the New Zealind style of Sauvignon Blanc. Will look for these but as has been noted in an earlier comment, Texas does not have the distribution for a number of the wines you have featured.

QOTD – Chinon, while not the exact producer your encouragement to try new wines led me to Cab Franc and I am a fan. The same with Dolcetto and recently I found a Cahoors to try.

You may not realize it in a powerful way, but I can assure you, you are succeeding in your mission of having us expand our (at least my) experience. Stay with it my friend. I need all the help I can get.

QOTD: ROTFLOL. Do you really expect the V’s to answer that question? Too much great stuff to really get a handle on it. In the vein of tonight’s episode though, I will tell you that the best QPR I ever got from WL on a white wine was the Sunday Mountain SB (multiple years). It is a great SB. I have a case in the cellar right now. Thanks GV!

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Good one, brother! Love Sancerre! I think im going to create a monthly blind tasting to help my close-minded friends broaden their palates.

QOTD: I can’t put my finger on a single wine, but trying varietals that I would have never heard of otherwise has been great! Thanks a lot, Gary!

Btw…I’m getting emails from a week ago letting me know new episodes are up.they all came at once…funny that today’s didn’t show up yet…lol.

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

Still need to grab that Pernot from a week or so ago…

  • supertrirunner

Mannnnnn BALLER! Using Feuillette for mimosas! I wish I could roll like that. Too rich for my blood

Nice show Gary. Focused and on point. Definitely making me consider Sancere as we get into spring.

QOTD: I’ve only tried a few, but good ones. Oyster Bay Pinot was nice, and the Zeghesio Zin was definitely a “crowd pleaser” this past Thanksgiving.

However MY favorate I’ve had from your show thus far is the Kung Fu Girl reisling from Charles Smith. Clean, fresh, floral, with nice fruit and a touch of minerality. The price point alone makes it almost criminal for such a good wine. I have a hard time NOT buying it every time I walk into my local wine store.

  • Anonymous

Probably the Betz family proprietary red though over nearly 6 years I have tasted a lot of the wines recommended. I did not like the Kung Fu girl but have had a lot of other Charles Smith wines based on his appearance that I did like. Several of the Tokaj wines won a favorite at my house. There were dogs too.

Man that was good but not cheap.

  • Anonymous

And that’s the beauty of wine right there. You are you own best critic.

    Gary,
really looking forward to show 1000. I am proud to say I have been here since day 1.
QotD: “GV Wisdom”= Last of the Mohicans= 2004 Bordeaux’s and the fab, Chateau Beausejour 04

  • Anonymous

Stupid Disqus, won’t even let me edit my own typos. You are YOUR own best critic

QOTD: I tasted my first Chinon after watching this show years ago, and that was the spark that sent me to really explore the more obscure regions and wines of the world. Gracias.

  • ChrisinMichigan

QOD: Easy answer 2001 Pinnio Brunello

  • DaveAll

    QotD: Many.
If you do quit at 1000, or take a break, it will make sense. How much do you spend on wine alone each week for these? wow.

Is anyone having trouble viewing the last four episodes after downloading to your iPod? I am having no trouble downloading but the episodes will not play.

QOTD — best? I expect some of the ones I haven’t opened yet!

Something tells me that the next 4 episodes are going to be AWESOME. Especially 998…

QOTD: 2006 J. Hofstätter Gewürztraminer Kolbenhof

The 2005 Cantina di Santadi Shardana Valli di Porto Pino IGT was a close second, but I actually only found out you’d raved about it after I’d already had it.

  • Keep it going Gary!!! Make it to 1000!!!! Love the show. FREAKING pumped that you’re going to get down to Virginia Tech!!!!!

  • I think it was the White Bordeaux you had a number of years ago as part of a secret 1 pack, you rated it around a 90. All I could think of is how tough a critic you were if that wine was only a 90 in your book.

  • One of the best QOTD:
    For me there are 3.

2005 Pomum Cellars Shya Red Blend
    Chartogne Taillet Cuvee St Anne
    2004 Tardieu Laurent Gigondas

  • Anonymous

    everyone knows 999>998. Duh, WINNING….
QOTD: Too many to choose just one. Some faves that come to mind include El Nido Clio, Emilio Moro Ribera Del Duero, and even Amon Ra. These are the big ones. Have had numerous everyday drinkers that were good. Heck, I really dug Pillar Box Red a few years back…despite the screaming alcohol content.

But not so much that, you convinced me to drink white wines, and I’ve grown to enjoy several varietals, include chardonnay, sparklers, GruV, Riesling, Guverstraminer, and more. Sorry, but I cannot find love for Sauv. Blanc. I’ve tried repeatedly.

Episode 919, 2005 Santadi Shardana I had to buy it somewhere else because you guys didn’t carry it, it was sold out.

  • qotd: there’s been a bunch, but recently, loved the barbera de alba compass you rec’d a couple months back

  • Anonymous

QOTD: 2006 Domaine Corbieres Cuvee Gaby, Tas Mor Can Barbera, Gorelli Sagrantino Montefalco Rosso, Mahi Sauvignon Blanc and many that are in the cellar. I’m sure the Jose Dhondt Champagne will be on the list. Favorite Cab might be the Waypoint, not sure if you had it on the show ?? and Stephanie Cab. Tough to narrow down to one.

Happy Monday to all the Vayniacs! This is the last week we will be in triple digit episodes!

QOTD: 2008 Chateau de Vaugaudry Chinon. Great green flavors!

  • Don Simpson

QOTD: That’s a tough one… More than anything the Thunder Show has introduced me to so many regions and varietals I had not previously tried. Some of my favorite introductions include Vouvray, Dolcetto d’Alba, Nebbiolo, countless italian whites, and I’m a HUGE sparkling wine fan now.
