EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

No kidding…16 bottles in the entire country?
Yeah, the silky texture is so seductive. I’ve always wanted to try Hillside Select. Not had 1.5 either, but there are plenty around. There is one bottle of the ’05 locally, and I just might have to buy it. I’ve had Shafer Relentless (80% syrah) it was nice but I prefer cabs. The merlot is nice, too (they are known for their merlot).

So I bought a couple of bottles of the ’07 CdP Vieux Telegraphe (375 ml). Now I have a total of 3 of these small bottles. I’ll save one for you. There are plenty of ’08s still around here. Wine Library’s price is excellent, but may hold off on this. I also bought the ’07 Cuvee Du Vatican. Now I am only 20 bottles behind you. πŸ™‚

  • Third weekend wine tasted

So the color is in between deep red and brick red, aha an older wine. The scent is first off very jammy, blackberry, cherries, raspberry, then there is some thyme, a bit of dried ham and a pinch of herbs. maybe some bay leaf too.

The taste is initially slightly sour but fresh, lots of raspberry and cherry lemonade with a dry feel. Mid palate is nice small but firm tannins with a bit of leather and white pepper. Back end bring back the acid/sour thing with cherry marmalade, more herbs and pepper and lingers nice. Hey that is that bay leaf again. Savoury feel, slightly dry all the way but silky smooth. another 92 .The Wine: Chapoutier Monier de la Sizeranne 1996

Had it with tenderloin of pork and creamed root vegetable

  • The three Vieux Teleraph makes well up for that πŸ™‚

What do you think of Cdp blanc, or Rhone whites in overall? I’ve had the ’07 vieux telegraphe CdP blanc ($57) was good but not great… not worth the price in my opinion. I had the Calliou rhone blanc yesterday at a tasting.. pretty good.

  • Love them, any marsanne and rousanne in a white makes good. I have several Cdp blancs as well as hermitage blanc, and other rhone blanc. They are always a good buy so far for my experience.

  • Must be nice. Good for him. I wonder if he’ll give any thumbs up on any Greek wines?

    WOW

Yesterday while grocery shopping, I noticed that Ridge Geyserville was on sale for $20. (I’ve seen this as low as $26 and as high as $32, but never this low). As you may recall I was so disappointed with the ’07 Lytton Springs (as were a couple of my friends). Not crazy about ’08 Geyserville either. Well, I just opened this ’07 Geyserville today and happy to report that it’s wonderful! Good structure, well-balanced light oak and a bit of spice.. Delicious. It paired well with nice steak seasoned with Greek rub and olive oil and a Greek salad, of course. (I was inspired by Trouty’s trip to Santorini). I need to visit again soon. πŸ™‚

Reading an article on off dry whites yesterday made me wonder if I should give white zin (or white merlot for that matter), another chance? Or if the potential is there for truly good white zin if the right maker comes along and takes it seriously and doesn’t go the sutter home route. Or maybe it’s already there and I don’t know it.
Off dry whites are not only accepted by most the wine community, there’s a lot of great ones. Vouvray, Riesling’s- particulary German, etc.
Reds too to a lesser extent. A lot of Ports and Banyuls even are sweet or off dry, but not cloyingly dessert sweet like ice wine, beerenauslese’s, Sauternes, Tokaji’s, etc.
Dry rose’s get love, whether from Provence, Italy, Spain and the U.S. etc. Rose sparkling is regarded as one of the most versatile food pairing wines out there. Demi-Sec rose is cool to most – when it’s sparkling.
What about off dry rose? Rose d’Anjou out of Loire was widely accepted and drank copiously by my clientele at a french restaurant I worked at. I brought in an off dry servadou rose from southwest France and enjoyed drinking it.
I wonder now if I would have enjoyed it if that wine was white zin and not an oddball servadou?
The article got me to thinking a bit and made me wonder if I am a bit of a hypocrite or a bit of a wine snob?
Perhaps because there’s no way I’m going to go out and buy a white zin today. I would love however to hear about a white zin being really great and of really high quality. Just because it would be so unexpected in the wine community if nothing else.
Maybe if someone starts doing a totally dry white zin and going from there it would start to gain some respect?
But like I said, perhaps I am a bit of a snob because I’m not sure I would even want to stand in line at a wine store right now with a bottle of white zin in my hand πŸ™‚

  • A little off here, off dry, with that I gather that you men non dry, more like half sweet, like a kabinett riesling?
I don’t mind to what extent the wine is sweet or not if it is a good wine. Being introduced to a real Bordeaux claret (Clairet) in 2005 was an eyeopener, not that is was off dry, but that it was rosΓ© with such a strong sense of red wine dry and white wine lush.

  • I think he already did πŸ™‚ His picture kind of out of focus πŸ™‚

  • ROFWL, you gotta be kidding πŸ˜€

    Hahahahahaha!

  • now that there’s funny…

  • John__J

yeah by off dry I mean semi-sweet or a little less than that. Certainly not a sweet wine or a “dessert wine”.
I don’t care for the term “dessert” wine by the way. I feel it boxes the wine into a limited category when many sweet wines go well with a lot more than dessert.

  • Hilarious!!!

  • 1002 on DG

  • NY Pete

    haven’t watched 1001 nor 1002 on GP.

  • Lisa S

    πŸ™‚ Thanks.

  • John__J

I wonder how many of these lost or originally intended for WLTV episodes are left, if any?

  • John__J

This is a deleted comment, but apparently I have to type something in here for it to be approved.

I have got a couple days of catching up to do! πŸ™

Sorry I have been away, the computer caught a “Cold” but we are all good now! πŸ™‚

    TTF
    Nostrovia!

  • Lisa S

Well thank goodness I was getting a bit lonely over here.

  • Anonymous

Good to have you back !!! Now if we can only get Dominus, and A few of the other TTF people back posting all will be good. πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

No no …. don’t be lonely over here. I’ll be coming back with some good wine post soon. I’m almost recovered from the Dominus dinner πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

Great question …. My guess is about 5-7 were canned early on. πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

I have not either on GP πŸ˜‰

1999 Dolce Late Harvest Wine ……

On the nose Apricot and Honey for Days, loved it. On the plate the wine is exactly what the nose put forth with a touch of honey dew melon and ripe bartlett pear. Soft, sweet, luscious with a touch of acidity. The finish is moderate in length but with a tingle that begs you for another pour.

    92-93 pts

    TTF … rock on.

  • Lisa S

Welcome back, buddy. πŸ™‚ I can’t believe you liked a late harvest wine? Would have never guessed! Mmmmm..Love apricots and honey!

  • It’s the sugar that keeps us mesmerized

  • HEY!!!

  • Lisa S

    πŸ™‚ Oops.
Okay, if it wasn’t for you, I would be VERY lonely here! You’ve been good company over the wknd with stellar wine reviews and fun chat about CdP.. Hey, I’m tempted to purchase more of the ’07 vieux telegraphe. πŸ™‚ What do you think?

  • It’s your budget … or did you mean mine πŸ˜€ There where som other good wines on that list. Why not ask the store if they recommend.

  • I apologize my friends for not posting. I have been reading all of the posts. I’m back but off to Dr in an hour or so. Woke up really dizzy this morning though it has subsided quite a bit but need to get it checked it out. Just thinking it may be dehydration or some bug. It can’t be bad wine right? πŸ™‚

    Cheers to #1002!

Federer just lost!!! Geez though I like Tsonga so not too bad.

  • Sorry my dear πŸ™

Fed just lost after winning first two sets!

  • Welcome back NWID. You need to buy a Mac. They are “cold free.” πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa S

Yikes! I am sorry, too. I wish I could watch some of this.

  • Lisa S

πŸ™‚ Actually the list was outdated.. When I arrived there were only 3 or 4 varieties of CdP 2007s available. I think I’m set. If you want an addit, small bottle of 07 vieux telegraphe.. I’ll see if there is any left. Or a large bottle of ’08.. Just let me know. πŸ™‚ Budget? What budget? I really should learn to drink cheap wine. πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa S

Yes, you might be dehydrated. Drink lots of water (Diet Coke doesn’t count). I’m glad you’re getting checked out by MD.

  • Yes, I’ve been drinking lots today and I mean “water and Gatorade” and not Diet Coke. πŸ™‚

I may have to curtail my vino tonight to only one glass. My friend Steve is coming over but no tennis per Dr’s orders so we’ll just chill out on the deck.

No stroke, took blood work so we’ll see if anything is amiss. Very weird though.

Thanks for your advice. I’m back!

    Cheers!

  • Nights like the two of you had takes me forever to fully recuperate but oh soo much fun. πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

Seriously? I wasn’t going to say anything but you guys are just too much. Oh cry me a river for heaven’s sake. The Dominus dinner was three weeks ago!! I had almost as much wine as Tennispro and I feel fine. (granted the ’82 bordeaux would have required an addit day to recover, but come on). We’re not that old, are we? Umm…TP is a weee bit older than moi, but still….

  • John__J

Which is why my love for Tokaji will never die. (The unbelievably awesome q.p.r. compared to other sweet wines and it’s great acidity balance don’t hurt either).

  • John__J

    about time Dan!

Jeez, a guy copies and pastes some “like” and “edit” button requests and he almost forgets all about the TTF’s!

  • John__J

Hope all is well. You gotta keep up on that water. You need it to balance the wine and avoid those morning headaches πŸ™‚
