EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

yeah it’s like we were never here lol.

  • We are “lightweights” 🙂

  • Lisa S

🙂 Too funny. I needed a laugh this morning. Thx.

  • I can’t speak for the others, but I’m old, really old….and approaching heavyweight I might and dur to the remark below. Gotta move around a bit more, this wine drinking is not improving myfigure, only my brain function. Played a round of golf today. 5 pars and one birde is not bad for me at my present shape and form. And it’s warm for Swedish conditions 82 F . Time for a Kilkenny to cool down

  • OK, I have been looking to buy a new car for the last four months and decided on one this weekend. I walked out Sunday since they did not meet my price, they countered, we agreed and today I started emailing my deposit info, driver’s license no, yada yada yada and expected to pick it up tonight before the clock struck 12 (to benefit them of course) and lo and behold I get an email that the manager cannot sell me the car since there was already a deposit on it so needless to say, the Domster is in a “prime mood” right now. That being said, I want to throw out a QOTD to the TTF though it is not wine-related unless of course your answer would be Bacchus. 🙂

QOTD: “Since the beginning of time (we could debate that one I guess) what one person has had the most profound/significant effect on human civilization?”

    Cheers!

P.S. This is the car that was taken from me. http://www.eurogermantownmercedes.com/Vehicle-Detail/2008/mercedes-benz/c-class/c300+sedan/ga6394.aspx?id=291946

  • John__J

You must be feeling pretty raw about it to say the least. I checked out the pic of it. Saying it’s a nice looking car probably wouldn’t be a good thing to say right now….

Jeez good question. Do we have to actually give a person’s name? Because the guy who 1st knew how to make/create and harness fire when he needed it (or gal), would have to be right up there. However his/her name escapes me at the moment 🙂

In all of human civilization? Man Dom, that’s a tough one. I’m curious to hear what your answer is.

I’m not going to get into religion, but I’m sure there are those that would go there for that answer.

    That one requires more thought.

  • Lisa S

    Well said, John J !!

  • Lisa S

I’m so sorry, Domster. 🙁 What the hell was the mgr thinking? Grrrr! Well, keep looking. It may take some time, but wait until you find a car that you love just as much, if not more. Don’t settle. It will happen. (Very nice car, by the way).

QOTD: Holy moly. This is deep and requires a thoughtful answer (although I like Bacchus). Sheeesh…You ARE in a “prime mood”, dear.

Umm ..it’s midnight and I just got home 30 min. ago. Will need to sleep on this one, although I am tempted to say it was Eve. 🙂

  • Lisa S

You’re not old! Just keep moving and everything will be fine. 🙂 Cool down? Are you serious?? Heatwave coming.. will be in the 90s F for the next five days here.

  • That was an impossible question to answer, what is for instance civilization?
And if we take all the religous characters out, there still be som pretty nasty folks left to ponder. Did Djingis kahn really transform mankind or did in fact Confuscious say all those great thoughts…

But I’ll say Lucy, becuse she stod up and wandered the earth and so we spread and actually developed diffrents skills and mindsets.

  • we are a grumpy people, above 80 and everyone complains, below 60 and everyone complains. usually higher temperatures alse mean high humidity, there a lot of vegetation, rivers, lakes, steams forrets in this country.

  • The rain stopped and I got some time in the sun after work. I cut me a slab of some nice dutch cheese and poured a glas of wine. Le Busche 2008, Italian white with 60% verdeccio and 40% chardonnay, 6 months in oak. Nice light golden color. Nose of nectarine, honey and a slight note of more tropical fruit. Taste is acid, tropical, complemented with yellow apple and mature pear. Oh even som almond. Lots of hot pepper on the mid palate and the back end is almost razor shapr acidity with pepper and limestone. A slightly tart finish, but long and strong. Give this a 89p just for the hot factor even when chilled for a sunny time. It went well with the grilled chicke and creamy potatosalad that I was served by my girl.

  • John__J

Got a dry Furmint form Tokaji, Hungary for tonight, I’m psyched!

Tasting notes to follow (and the winery name too, as it’s hard to remember off hand with those Hungarian words).

  • Well, it’s late but wanted to wish everyone a Happy 4th in case I don’t get back before then though I’m sure I will. Tomorrow I’m hosting a cookout for old tennis friends from years ago that has become an annual event. So needless to say, I’ll be a busy man grilling and entertaining. My “my grille is bigger than yours” is supposed to bring over some “killer Spanish wine.” I’m expecting it will be good. I could pull out the San Roma and knock his socks off but I’ll refrain.

Oh yes, short and sweet, the person who snuck in and bought the car from underneath me was declined financing so it became available EXCEPT at the first price they gave me and not the “discounted agreed upon price.” So I bought a different one so all is good. The Domster has a “new: car but really it’s “pre-owned” or better yet “used.”

I’ll be back with reviews on what Mr Komoda Grille brings.

    Happy 4th TTF!

    Cheers!

  • I was raw for sure but better now. Thanks

I have some ideas for my QOTD but will wait til everyone else submits their choices.

  • Lisa S

Nice review. Interesting info as I have zero knowledge about Tokaji !

  • Lisa S

On Thurs I organized dinner for 100 people (work-related event). The entree choices were:
    1. Whole roasted beef tenderloin with mashed potatoes and steamed asparagus
    2. Porcini-crusted halibut -also with mashed potatoes and steamed asparagus
    3. Vegetarian option was: Risotto with vegetables (only 5 people chose this option). Beef is always the most popular choice at these events, but halibut came in a close second.

    We served the following wines:
    1. ’09 Acacia Chardonnay (Carneros).. Nice fruit, a bit too oaky/buttery for my palate, but not bad and somehow paired well with the halibut. A nice, less expensive alternative to Rombauer. $16. TP, are you reading this? 🙂

    2. Duckhorn Sauvignon Blanc: I always like this wine. Not too green and grassy. They always blend in the right amount of semillon to give it a nice structure and balance. WL has a good price on this wine. It sells for $26-27 around here.

    3. Provenance Cabernet Sauvignon: A nice, easy-drinking cab. Not very complex. Nice fruit.

I haven’t yet received the final bill from country club to see which wine was the favorite of the evening. Usually it’s the pinot noir, but since they didn’t have a decent PN to choose from this year, we skipped it.

    Happy 4th of July!!
Stay safe and don’t drink and drive (or drink and dial, or drink and….?). 😉

  • John__J

Foods sounds great, I like the Duckhorn myself a lot too, haven’t had it in quite a while. I’ve never had the Provenance before. I’m very similar when it comes to oaky/buttery chard, I’m not too big on them. I did just see Acacia got a nice mention in Spectator in their current issue on Chard’s.

  • Lisa S

Oh yes, the humidity factor changes everything. Not much of an issue in Calif, compared to other places. I’ll never forget the humidity in Thailand and Hong Kong when I visited 10+ yrs ago. Yikes!

Sounds lovely though. I want to visit your grumpy but green country someday.

  • Nice, but arranging a dinner for 100 peoplel, thats massive!!
Was everyone happy? I would have liked all dishes….

  • Do that in late may june or july. The colors are really beautiful that time of year and you get to see the sun being up untill 10 pm or more depending how far north you go. A couple of years ago a was rwally up north and I played golf at midnight with no problems regarding visibility. Midnight sun!

  • Lisa S

Everyone was happy! Lots of great feedback. I loved the halibut (forgot to mention that it came with a light chardonnay cream sauce). Not too difficult since I didn’t cook. The country club has a nice chef and wait staff. The most difficult part for me is keeping track of the guest list, RSVPs and staying within a budget (I don’t like budgets). 🙂

Lisa, sounds like the evening was a hit. Everything I’m sure worked to perfection just because you put it together. That Cab better be the hit, but when women are involved the Sauv Blanc probably took it.

Miss you over at DG. Taking a break? My mouth is watering from your menu! 😉

Glad to hear the car thing is all worked out. How did your trip to the doctor go? Your dizziness all taken care of?

Your cookout sounds like it will be a blast. Have a GREAT 4th Dominus and that goes for everyone. Be safe and drink responsibly! 😉

  • John__J

I just bought 2 more bottles. At the very least it’s something different.

  • John__J

I’m not 100% sure who said it, so I won’t try and guess who it was. But someone said not too long ago how the comments over at DG didn’t really have the same feel as it did over here.
I had thought when reading that that it just needed time maybe. But now I think perhaps I’m starting to see it. It’s getting to where it’s at least occurring to me to give up commenting over at DG. I am starting to notice a real difference, with at least some or the feel of it in a way. Perhaps I’m just commenting on there a lot more than I should. I did make it a point in the past few weeks to comment more than I would normally. In the hopes of trying to have the same feel or community or whatever that was going on here at WLTV.
Perhaps I’m reading into things too much, or maybe it’s just me, but over there it’s just- different or whatever.
Still a ton of great people over there. Of course Mott, Ian and K Murph have always been great, and it’s really nice to see more of Gary’s crew commenting over there, but overall…
But again, maybe it’s just me.

I’d be curious to hear everyone else’s perspective on this.

  • Well, all americans friends. May this day be good to your palate and to your health. May it be reminder of that things like a day free is not a bad thing, once in a while, but a good one, that helps us to stop and think on that which give life purpose.
Familiy, friends and a cheer. 😀

  • so yesterday I drank from a wine I had opende last Sunday. I must ponder about that for a bit. The wine was Chapoutier Monier de la Sizeranne 1996. Last sunday i decribed it like slightly sour but fresh, lots of raspberry and cherry lemonade with a dry feel small but firm tannins with a bit of leather and white pepper with the end acid/sour thing with cherry marmalade, more herbs and pepper.
Reseald with a vacuum stopper and placed int the refrigirator and now opened again it revealed the same type of description with the exception a tiny, tiny bad bitter end.
So I wonder, is this typical for a well made wine that don’t go flat after one week opened or is this something else, the vaccum, the “chill”?
    Enlighten me!

  • John__J

I’ve found it hard to get absolutes on that sort of thing, it’s anything but. My short reply would be that it definitely lasted longer with the vacuum stopper and being kept in the fridge than if it was out on the counter and left opened without being sealed.

Depends on the wine, as in the varietal or varietals. Where that wine is from, i.e. the region and how the vintage was for that wine. Depends on the winemaker and how he chose to make the wine. How the wine was treated before you got it, as far as shipping and where it was kept and in what conditions. Was the wine laying under a bright light in a room temperature liquor store for years? Or was it kept in a dark room for years at a cool temp undisturbed? How did you store the wine after you got it but before you opened it? How old the wine is before you opened it? How it was stored after you opened?
So I feel like those are all factors. I also think wine is a lot tougher than some people think. Even with all the factors I mentioned above (and the ones I’m sure I forgot or don’t know), I think you can still gauge pretty well a lot of times how the wine will hold up. But there’s plenty of times I’m surprised by a bottle, which is another reason why I love wine.

  • In essence, a good made wine have the potential to last longer opened and factors of oxygen and temperatrure can help. I had a white rioja of a non costly type and that lost everything in one day, turned into bitter lemon water of the stale kind.

    Thanks for the input John
    Happy 4 th

  • Lisa S

Yes, agree with John J (and your first sentence above).

However, one week in the fridge with vacuum stopper would be OK with a red, but I wouldn’t expect a white to hold up as well.. at least that has been my experience. Interestingly, I was at a tasting a couple of weeks ago where they poured a petite sirah (in the mid-$20 range)..The wine fell apart after a few hours (during the tasting).. By the time I arrived (late), everyone was talking about it. Very odd.. Not sure I’ve seen that before.

  • I have with old wines. I have a friend that are a true Alsace and Mosel nerd and he offer old rieslings and gewurz, some of them fall apart withing minutes of openeing. Juts last fall he served a reilsing from 1982. It smelled just awsome and the first sipp was divine, but within 20 minutes the wine died completely, but come to think of it I have never had a red that died like that, hmm must explore more.
I even bought som old portugese and french reds just to see how old bad wine tastes or just to get a bottle that was corked, but no such “luck” yet. They all have shone brightly.

  • Sounds like a spectacular evening. I have yet to attend any kind of “work-related” event with wines of those caliber. Great choices. I also like the Provenance and almost cracked it Saturday but put it back in the “cave.”

Hope everyone had a great 4th celebration. We are very fortunate.

  • I like the avatar. 😉

Yes I did see the match. Novak is playing fearless tennis right now and he looks like he has taken his game to a new level. What a historic run he is on. Kinda like when Mac was on his run back in the day.

Hope everything is okay with you and your health. I am still rehabbing my achilles and it’s a pain to get rid os scare tissue !!!!

Will post a wine review soon 😉

  • Lisa S

    Thanks, D.
I think you might like the Duckhorn SB, too.
Hope you are enjoying your new car. Vroom vroom! 🙂

  • Lisa S

I also saw the match between Djokovic and Nadal and thought of you guys.
Wow.. Achilles still sore? I’m sorry. 🙁

  • So far, so good, thanks for asking. Since I play tennis today, I drove it to work this morning. It was nice tooling down the parkway in a new ride with a view of Georgetown University and the monuments.

  • I am sorry too, nothing worse than rehabbing an injury. A friend of mine had his knee replaced and said there was no worse pain than the therapists trying to break the scar tissue during his rehab. He said it was bad in fact they will need to amputate his other leg before he gets another knee replacement.

Hang in there. Long process but will be well worth it in the end. I surely don’t want to be on the other side of the net when you return. 😉

Yes, Novak is playing fearless. Good analogy.

  • Thank you 😉

It’s nice to be thought of, no matter the situation, but for tennis . . . that much better!

  • Lisa S

Georgetown and the monuments! And what a beautiful view it is! I love D.C. Enjoy the car!

If I can cut back on my high-end pinot noir expenditures.. maybe next year I can buy this (CPO – not new):

TTF …. What winery would you like to visit again. ???

One of my most memorable wine tours was in Santa Rosa for a trade tasting (4 people) at Kendal Jackson….. the private chef was a nice touch as we tasted the 1997 releases and a few older gems. The Flora Springs members appreciation tasting was also quite good 😉
