It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

  • Bad wine experience at restaurant? Have you had any lately?
Mine was this Friday at a supposedly nice restaurant at a coastal town. Nice old building smack in the middle of the harbor. Jets set yachts right below and night club on the top floors. Ordered the house white without asking, first mistake. Looked at the price and saw second mistake 11 dollars for a glass!!
Ordered soy and sesame marinated salmon with asparagus, creme boiled leek and new potatoes.
Got a full glass, should have picked up on that, warning.
A non nondescript Sauv blanc green grass bitter, watery flop of a wine. Not even nice chilled. Asked what it was, Two Oceans Sauvignon Blanc Chenin Blanc BiB which one can buy for 25 dollars for 3 liter!!
    The fish was good…
Had to redeem that dreadful moment with buying fresh Nordic lobster, fresh prawn and some crab claws, aioli and bread so I and my sweetheart could bunk down a cliff, watching the sunset and just chill. With me I brought a bottle of the Blanc de franc Gary reviewed in DG ep no 64. That was very enjoyable

Coming from restaurants, I see the pluses and minuses pretty quickly from service to whatever when sitting down to eat in a particular restaurant.
When it comes to the wine, 1st I ALWAYS smell the inside of the wine glass. You’d be surprised how many can go through a commercial dishwasher and still come out smelling like rancid fish. Even a subtle bad smell in a wine glass can ruin the wine. I learned that the hard way.
Some things like lipstick seem to never come out clean when going through a commercial dishwasher and need to be polished. But it’s usually the smells coming from glasses that APPEAR clean that are the worst.
2nd, call me a wine snob, but I always want to know what the wine is and who the producer is before I order any wine. That’s been the deciding factor in whether I get wine or instead settle for a beer or cocktail in many a restaurant.
Sorry about your experience, at least you made up for it later.

  • I’ll take the glass smelling to heart. In this instance that would not been any help since there where no glasses on the tables before being served. I’ll guess that uis a bad sign inyour book, but this was a patio overlooking the harbor and big turnover of customers. But I won’t be eating there again so…

  • John__J

I wouldn’t call it a bad sign. But it can make it hard to smell the glass 1st! 🙂

  • Lisa S

Well that is one sad wine story and I’ve had more than I can count (bad restaurant wine). And $11 is expensive for a glass of HOUSE wine. By the way, if I don’t like the wine-by-the glass, I will tell the waiter and he/she will always ask if I’d like to try something else instead, which is nice.

Sounds like you made up for the rough start with wonderful shellfish! Great way to end the evening. Go Anders! (I need to watch ep #64 and learn about Blanc de franc ??)

  • Lisa S

Well?????????????? Can’t wait to hear about it!!! Umm.. It was only a 100 degrees in Fresno, yesterday, by the way. 🙂

  • Anonymous

What a bummer!!! Your right any restaurant that serves you a full glass of anything should be questioned 😉 unless of course you tipped the waiter a lot of dough !!!

I’ll have to think of my last terrible wine and food experience … great question !

    great post !

good to have you back over here 😉

TTF ….. 7-31-2011 Diamond Creek Tasting…. outdoors at the winery’s lake where all three of the vineyard meet up. A beautiful day in Napa – Temp 88 with a slight breeze.

First off the picnic /vineyard walk/ tasting was from 11-4. My wife and I arrived at 3 pm just as the wine tasting kicked off ;-). Had to work in the AM and it took 2 hrs get to Napa from Sacramento. I’m so glad that I made the tasting as this one of the bucket list wine I’ve been looking forward to experiencing.

The tasting event held at a outdoor small hut like you’d see in Fuji. It was an event similar a Silver Oak release where it is a mad house to get a pour. In this case there was two lines with about 80 – 100 wine starved DC groupies. I’ve played this game before and have had much experience in getting a good sampling of the wines ;-). This experience ended up paying big dividends since the pours must have been 1 oz so it was hard work getting a solid sampling of the wine. In the end I think I did a good enough job to post this review. This event was an open house / futures release party – only the 2009 DC wines were poured.

First wine tasted DC 2009 Red Rock Terrace

On the nose that classic mountain smell of scorched earth, saddle, leather, and wild berries. The first sip brought forth memories of some the great Pride Mountain Reserve wines I’ve tasted. Mountain fruit wines where the wines transforms into bordeaux like wines. You must be able to like and understand french wines to fully appreciate and respect what DG brings to the table. All the wines were obviously still very young but I got a hint of what was to come. On the palate- soft semi ripe wild blackberries interwoven with mocha, cassis, leather and not quite integrated tannins. The wine was neither too acidic or too tannic, just a great wine (like the great French wines) needing years to come together. I will not score these wines as they are way too young to judge I will only say that my cellar now holds some Red Rock Terrace.

Second Wine Tasted DC 2009 Volcanic Hill …… To be continued tomorrow 😉

Awesome review! Sounds like a great time outside of the lines, which you seem to have a handle on.

  • Apart from a big crowd that sounded like something I really would have enjoyed.

  • John__J

I know you don’t comment over at DG Tennis, but do you watch the episodes?
If not you should consider secretly checking out the new one, it’s pretty awesome.

🙂 Sorry I missed it, but this is the next best thing to being there!!! Great review.

  • Lisa S

Yeah, no kidding, John. I was happy to be seated next to TP at the Dominus dinner in June. 😉 Not only were there refills, but we had our own bottle of ’06 Dominus.. Not sure how he managed that, but he did.

  • And what did appear on behind the Grape yesterday. A Madiran! Is Gary checking our banter, perhaps?

  • Yo yo homies. How is everyone this Wednesday evening? I don’t know why but tell me if I’m wrong but am I am getting somewhat lethargic over at DG? I am trying to “keep the faith” and be as involved as possible but I remember the days when I would come home, and like clockwork, there was an episode of WLTV waiting for me. This new format is too haphazard for me, being the anal, Type-A kinda guy, this new schedule messes up my daily rituals!! 🙂 I know, I know, I have no life but this was one of the highlights of my life and now, it may be there . . .

Other than that, life is ok, work stinks, trying a bunch of wines which have been quite good and kicking butt on the tennis court which is always euphoric.

Hope all is well with everyone.

    Cheers!

  • Lots of sweat since we have a an incredible strech of 7 days of 85F and sunshine here 🙂
Haphazard, thats a word I like. Daily seem to be a word one cannot trust so much 🙂 But nevermind that. Its easy to make a routine that becomes a rut that get you stuck, right?

    Cheers

  • Slowly approaching 3K . . .

  • I’m a member of a 12 hole golf course. Tonight I played a round. 4 over par for twelve holes is good for me, 13 hcp, made birdies on all four par 3, my irons was just peppering that flag. Longest 178 m I nailed a 4 iron to a yard from the stick. Happy today 🙂

4 over for 12 holes is great! I am jealous! I used to be that good until my kids got old enough and then it became all about them. 😉 I used to play to a 5 hdcp and I know I can get back there but it will take a little time.

That 4 iron had to be a beauty! That feeling, ahhhhhh, there is no other like it. Was it an actual 4 iron or a hybrid? Either way, nothing better. A good walk and a pure hit. 😉

  • actual 4 iron. Don’t carry hybrids yet. Playing Mizuno Tzoid with steel rifle shafts. Have never played anything but blade and forged clubs

  • Friday evening wine. Sancerre La Baronne 2010 by Henri Bourgeois. Scent aromatic, youthful with the distinct character of smoked wood, some minerals, hints of nettles, pears and citrus. Taste, lush fresh and dry, aromatic flavor with a distinct character of mineral, hints of nettles, asparagus and lime and small quantities of peach and white flowers. Soft and medium long finish. Good wine for hot smoked honey glaced salmon that we had.

  • Lisa S

I love the Sancerre recommendations.. I need to expand my palate in this area.. So far they are my favorite sauvignon blancs. I’ll try to find it here locally. Thanks Anders!

All is well and I tend to agree with you on the DG front. My routine seems to be in shambles right now and I also need to have that regular as clockwork fix. I don’t think I am quite a anal as you Dominus, but somethings just have to be in order.

Things here are well and I am totally enjoying my work. I think that has a lot to do with being off for 7 months and finding a new perspective on the whole work thing. Here in the heartland we have got a break from the 90+ weather. We are experiencing the low 80’s this week. 🙂 Been playing a little more golf and I need to get back to my running again. I keep purchasing the wines, I just need to be enjoying them more. 😉

    TTF!

    NOSTROVIA!

Come on Lisa, go Loire Valley! They have the Blancs, Suav and Chenin. You can get them fruity or dry. They are fantastic and at a great QPR. 🙂 Sancerre’s are nice also, but I’m am in love with Loire Valley right now.

  • Lisa S

🙂 Great stuff from Loire – I agree!

I think Sancerre is part of the Loire Valley?

By the way, I tasted some Trefethen wines last night. Their Napa dry riesling is very good (Alsatian like). Was impressed with their 07 Napa cabernet sauvignon too.

  • Got some really nerdy stuff in my wine fridge. Moulin Touchais, Chenin blanc with ageing potential ca 100 years…..http://www.nicks.com.au/Index.aspx?link_id=76.938

  • Lisa S

That’s what I thought. Thanks Anders. Loved the France Terroir info “Types of wine: Nervous dry white wine” 🙂

  • Anonymous

You are absolutely right about Sancerre. I knew that, I must have been thinking somewhere else. My Bad!

The Trefethen I have seen at my store of choice. I will have to procure me a bottle of the Cab. I will check and see if they have the Riesling.

  • Anonymous

Nice link Anders. Are you going to wait the 100 years before tasting? 😉

  • John__J

great review, feels like I could taste it myself

  • or buy a really old bottle somewhere 🙂
I got 91,92 and 95 and I can buy 71, 79,81,85,96, as soon I can save some ( spending it all now on my trip).

  • Yikes, now THAT was a smell-a-vision type review especially the “nettles” reference which I must say we don’t have (at least I didn’t realize it) in our “neck of the woods.”

    Good job 🙂

  • So true but I need something to bring me out of the rut to expand my horizons so I stay “safe” and watch GV, drink some nice wine, attempt some interesting recipes, play a little tennis and enjoy my conversations with my WL homies. What more can one ask for?

Off to hit some balls this morning. I was sweating like a baby in a topless bar yesterday. Man it was hot.

    Cheers!

  • I hope GV is ok. Everything seems to be waning a bit over at DG but it could be me.

  • All depend how you see it. 3 weeks vacation is not that bad, considering that he hardly had a day of in 6 years… but I what I don’t understand is that it could easiliy be a daily grape, if there was a stand in. Trouty did some videos for Cork’d before they pulled that plug.

  • not nettles? we have the in abundance here, we make soup of them early springtime before they get to nasty/sticky/itchy. Sort of spinache like ..

  • Lisa S

Well, GV commented a day or two ago that they were “going through some stuff..”, which doesn’t sound good. I’m concerned as well.

  • Ohhhhhhhh, sounds good to me. Learn something every day.

  • Sounds like a plan to me. We will see. Hope all is well with him.

  • Lisa S

TTF – Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend!

I just popped and poured a great cab and had to tell you about it. (NWID: I liked this better than the 07 Trefethen cab).. ’08 Stuhlmuller Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.. This wine reminds me of a Silver Oak Alexander Valley cab from the 1990s. Approachable, nice mouthfeel, tannins, black cherry and blackberry fruit with a bit of earth and spice. I bought this at the recommendation of another customer at a wine tasting several months ago at Beltramo’s. $33 and worth every penny.

I’m pairing this with filet mignon, mashed potatoes and a greek salad.. 🙂 Cheers.

  • Thanks for inspiring us Gary!

  • served with a boiled sliced egg and a cold beer and some crisp bread and cheese, it’s a good dinner 🙂

  • I read that my infamous swordfish with lima bean-herbed butter dish pairs well with Chenin Blanc. Any recommendations that are readily available or should I just wing it? I’m having it again tomorrow evening after tennis.

  • I had a glass of wine from the Murcia region today. Ceperos, 2006 Monastrell 65%, 20% Shyraz, 15% Sauvignon. The odd thing is that it is stored for 6 months in barrels made of German oak .
I liked this wine for 3-4 years ago, but my taste has gone from the abundance of sweet that this wine brought then to a little more austere, earthy but smooth as you will find in the Northern Rhone ..Well, I had a bottle left and not saving it more I thought why not take a sip with the pasta and bacon that bonus son 2 offered today.
This wine as a wooping 16% Alcohol level. Color is intense and bright purple edged with maroon. The aroma is of dried plum, red forest fruits, nuts and some spices and of course alcohol. The flavor is hot, the alcohol feels like a shell around the wine’s flavor mixed with a lot of pepper. Like a balloon around everything else. Inside the frame of alcohol and pepper there is a soft and smooth feel and a lot of candied fruit and ripe red paprika/peppers mixed with spices and a little soil.
And my palate have changed. The heat is to awkward and the fruit a tiny bit to sweet. But this wine is a bit older since I drank it last so, from my memory, it have mellowed a bit. Still, nah, not a wine that I could drink more then one glass of, but it is certainly a wine to drink if one wants some buzz.
