It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

  • Haha, nice. Well maybe Beethovens 9 th too πŸ™‚
But a an idea. An app that recommends a tune to the wine. How long before it is launched?

  • This one for MelbaLi

    Rodenbach Grand Cru
1/3 new ale 2/3 ale aged two years in oak barrels. Flemish red-brown ale.
And its is bright dark red-brown with a rim of almost reddish foam. Has a intruguing nose of black currant, cumin, hops, sweet licorice and sweet semi dark bread.
Taste is very fresh and light, evcen better if served chilled, with high acid for a beer. Gingerly I think one would call this in english, som dried red berries, licorice, brown sugar, blood orange.

Made of corn, malted barley and hops. Method is top fermentation at room temperature and then som fermentation after bottling

  • What, not had GrΓΌner Veltliner before? Austria main star

And the sparkling is not a rosΓ©, it’s more like champagne, thats why you like, right πŸ™‚ One just have to love those Cremants from all the different regions. QPR.

  • Lisa S

I had not heard about GG Park gig “Outside Lands.” Too funny that you know more about what is going on in SF than I do! πŸ™‚ Looks like fun, but can’t tell from website if it’s sold out or not.

It’s been years since I’ve been to Golden Gate Park (shameful).. I’ve driven past it on my way over to GG bridge many times. I need to stop and smell the flowers.. drink the wine, visit de Young Museum… πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

Thanks, TP, but I’ll be in Fresno this weekend for my Grandma’s 100 b-day.
Sorry to miss this. I’ve not had Diamond Creek before and sounds like it will be a long time before I do.

I’ll be in Napa on Sat Aug 6.. Wrong weekend. πŸ™

  • My grandma on my fathers side had her 93’rd a week ago. Turnig 100 is huge. Hope you and she has a good time .

  • John__J

    Fantastic idea Dom

  • John__J

Wow the bloodlines in your families are way longer than mine.

  • John__J

Let us know how it goes

  • Lisa S

Great idea! It’s dinner time and I wish I was having a ’97 Dominus and a grilled ribeye right now. Beethoven’s Fifth? . interesting choice. I am surprised by that one, Dom. Not sure why… but I am.

As Anders mentioned below, there will soon be an app for that!!

Cheers to Dominus (you and your namesake wine), Midwestern corn-fed beef, and Ludwig van Beethoven!

  • Lisa S

So true, Anders! Good call on the “app” !
    I like Beethoven’s 9th.
Hey, how do we know that is really you(below) and that you didn’t steal comment from poor Bengt Cyniker?? Sheeesh.. Just when you think you know people. πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

Yeah, can you believe it? My first Gruner V! The wine shop buyer told me that Austrian wines have lost their momentum in the past couple of yrs in the U.S.due to distributor issues, economy, etc. They are on some restaurant menus in SF, however, since they pair well with Asian food.

You hit the nail on the head, re: sparkling rose. Oui! Great QPR with Cremants!

  • Lisa S

Yeah, Grandma is a tough cookie.. Never smoked or drank and feisty as hell. She is also an Armenian Genocide survivor. Her three children are in their 70s. Pretty remarkable.

  • Lisa S

    Thank you so much, Anders.

  • What, I’m a grumpy old man! Of course I have a real cynical alias to shout my discontet to the world πŸ˜€

  • Wednesday is bonus son no 3’s day to cook. Today he didn’t. He bought pizza instead. With pizza comes the red wine craving, at least for me. So I opened a ChΓ’teau BouscassΓ© 2007 Madiran appellation. 50% Tannat, 26 Cab souv and 24% Cab franc.
Nose is clay and chalk mixed with pine wood, blueberry, blackberry with a bit of pencil shaving at the end. A new experiance this is πŸ™‚
Mouthfell is medium thick and silky smooth with blackberry and white pepper up front, under that some bay leaves and roasted oak. Mid palet show hot small tannins, white pepper dominates. Back end bring som meat fell and taste and finally some tobacco.. Medium long finish with not heat. stranget that the pepper is upfront and on the midpalate only. 88-89 p
18 bones at the state monopoly.
since I had a meaty pizza (bacon, ham, gound beef and salami with onion and tomato) the wine complemented nice.
    Cheers.

  • Nice, that works for me on a Wednesday though I relegate Friday as my “Pizza Night.” Sounds yummy and the wine review is par excellence.

For my Wednesday, I had a recipe from FOOD & WINE http://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/grilled-swordfish-with-lima-bean-and-herb-butter from a nice article of the Beekman Boys who are noted for their reality TV series here in the States. It was a hit and I paired it with three different whites:
    Emmolo SB from CA
    Sancerre http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=1129068 and a
2009 Muller-Thurgau from Annie Amie (OR)
    http://www.anneamie.com/2009-cuv%C3%A9e-m%C3%BCller-thurgau-0

Delicious stuff. My friend Steve and I solved the U.S. debt and Middle East problems all in one night. πŸ™‚

    Cheers my friends,
    Dom

  • Any other music ideas to pair with a ’97 Dom? I’m open to ideas. Maybe “Ride of the Valkyries” by Wagner or maybe on the other side of the spectrum with “Clair de Lune” by Debussy? It’s all about one’s sensory “palate.” πŸ˜‰

  • Agree, I want some notes on the DC. I have no past experiences or idea as to what to expect.

  • 100!!! I’m guessing having you as a grand-daughter is her secret to living a long, fruitful life. πŸ˜‰

  • Same here. The Thunderbird and National Boh wreaked havoc on them. πŸ˜‰

  • I need to find out. BRB

Hmmm it’s a ’91 Diamond Creek “Volcanic Hill” and while I was down there I noticed a 2002 Staglin Family Anniversary edition along with some ’98 Dunn and Araujo.

I need to check WS to see if the DC is ready or past it’s prime.

  • Note below.

  • TP: I’m good to go! Here’s the review from WS on the ’91 Volcanic Hill

This is a deceptively rich and detailed wine. Though it lacks overt ripe fruitiness, it adequately compensates with a mix of rich, earthy currant, hints of cherry and berry and traces of cedar, anise and tobacco. Firm tannins indicate a long life ahead.–’81/’91 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now through 2012.

Dom is good. Just need to find a time, place and person to enjoy this fine wine. πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa S

Interesting, Anders. I had not heard of Tannat until last week at Tablas Creek wine tasting at K&L wine shop. They had a Tannat (not sure if it was 70% or a 100%) Let me just say it was my first and maybe my last Tannat. Your wine sounds much better though. And who doesn’t love pizza??

  • Lisa S

We’re not that complicated, really. πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa S

Oui..Oh so true about one’s sensory palate. “Clair de Lune” Excellent choice!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvFH_6DNRCY&feature=related

  • Lisa S

Hahaha. I had to Google “National Boh.” Very funny.

  • I see that peeps in the US also know how to live πŸ˜€
And since it’s a sunny day at my place, white wine on the patio can be an option after work… Oh, no my parents are coming for a visit and it’s thursday… This will be tough. I’ll return with some notes if there be wine.

  • John__J

If you’re talking about multiple episodes I have a few ideas, or things I haven’t seen but would like too. (and it’s not all weird esoteric wine ideas either)
I like your vs. ideas, like Jumilla vs Bandol would be fun.
You could really dumb it down and do a white zin vs white merlot.
You could do a lot of things with pinot.
Like U.S. pinot, vs. Patagonian pinot, vs. Burgundy vs. New Zealand pinot vs. Spatburguner vs. Tasmanian pinot etc.

You could do a pinot family one with pinot noir, pinot gris, pinot blanc, pinot meunier, st. laurent, zweigelt (we’re pushing it with zweigelt, as st. laurent is the female part of pinot noir and when you cross it with blaufrankish you get zweigelt. So what’s that make zweigelt to pinot? A cousin once removed? who knows?)

You could do the whole family idea with Sangiovese (chianti, Brunello, Vino Nobile, Morellino, etc.
Same thing goes for the traminer and muscat families.

There’s a whole line of Sherries from light to full – manzanilla, fino, oloroso, palo cortado, cream, pedro ximenez.
    I can go on.
That stuff may be a bit too involved though. A Napanook vs. Dom value play or a Cremant vs Champagne type thing may be a bit easier to handle.
If this is all strictly for parody, then it way not work either.

Either way I’ll check it out when it’s up

  • John__J

Madiran, love it. Those suckers will age forever. Nice review once again

  • John__J

Uruguay is doing some awesome Tannat. In a few years I expect Tannat to be to Uruguay what Carmenere is to Chile and Malbec, Bonarda and Torrontes is to Argentina.

  • You seem to be full of ideas already. Brown bag with tetra pak, wouldn’t that be a dead giveaway πŸ™‚
Different sparkling sound the best at this moment.

  • and you have your own wine video blogg somewhere? Bring it on…

  • Lisa S

Whatever you choose to do will be happily received by all, so I vote Yay! πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

Why not ? πŸ˜‰ Brown bag would be great, however I would start with two wines you really enjoy. That way it’s a win win πŸ˜‰

    Bring it !!!

  • get outta here spammer

    Thanks Mott and AndersN

  • John__J

Tannat from Argentina for me tonight

  • Anonymous

This is the second or third time you have brought up Tannat. Are you on a Tannat kick at this time or something? πŸ˜‰

  • John__J

not that I’m aware of, perhaps it’s just worked out that way I guess.

My review of the 2008 Steltzner Vineyards Napa Valley Claret :

Upon opening this bottle, my first observation is by sniffing the cork. I know that don’t mean anything, but I like doing it anyway and the aroma is a wonderful Bordeaux like smell. I just love that smell. πŸ™‚ I pour my first glass and give it the Vaynerchuk swirl. Then i bring the edge of the glass to my nose and I dive in. I give the “sniffy sniff” and an abundance of black fruit comes flush into my nostrils. Then another sniff and comes the currant, licorice, with a touch of oak. I am very pleased with the initial sniffs, but I let it breath for a bit because I get that alcohol smell which I’m worried about. After about an hour I try the sniff again and the alcohol smell is all gone away. The smells I first encountered are full and robust.

Time to give it a whirl. At first taste the black fruit, dark cherries and currant are there with the licorice also. There is a hint of oak and the tannins are just the right amount which makes the dryness just right. I can take mine overly dry, but this along with the rest is a good balance. There is a vegetal aspect to this wine which leads me to believe there is Cab Franc in it.The only draw back is it doesn’t last a long time in the mouth which I really look for and a tad on the thin side, but all in all a very serviceable bottle of wine. I may have to go buy a couple more bottles because at $15 Bones the QPR is spot on.

I am going to have to give this an 88+, very nice at the price point. I do recommend. πŸ˜‰

    NOSTROVIA!
