EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

You don’t know where we are?? I’m shocked. 🙂 Well, TP is in Sacramento, CA, I am in Menlo Park (SF Bay Area), NW Indiana Dan is near Chicago, Dom is in your neck of the woods, and we all know where Anders is. Melba is in Long Island, NY, I assume NYPete is in NY and Cellarrat is in Lodi or near Sacramento, CA.

Yes, you guys have had a long heatwave! It’s hot here in northern CA, but overall temps have been below normal, unlike the rest of the country.. I am crossing my fingers though. This too shall pass my friend. Drink chilled wine. 🙂

  • Lisa S

Probably not a holiday.. Crazy Europeans.. At least they know how to live! 🙂

  • or beer 🙂

  • No holiday just friends having a good time. Me, I’m working my fingers to the bone, the others have vacation so I just tagged along. Being a manager have it perks, didn’t have to be at work until 8.30

  • John__J

I knew where some of you guys and gals were and the general area of most almost everyone else. I assume the same about NYPete. I’d be surprised if I found out he was in Boise all this time 🙂

  • Lisa S

Too funny! I’m sorry, you did say, “don’t know HOW it is where you are..” not “don’t know WHERE you are…” my mistake, John. I blame it on the two glasses of CA sauvignon blanc I had before commenting. 🙂

  • NY Pete

LOL … NY Pete is truly a New Yorker.

  • or even Buffalo?

  • John__J

    Closing in on 3000 comments…

    It’s a scorcher here in Sacramento currently. !!! ;-(

What invitation? and who is Will Phelps ? 😉

Will Phelps wrote: Hey guys, my name is Will Phelps from Joseph Phelps Vineyards. Gary wanted winery owners to introduce themselves so there ya have it! Please contact me if you ever want a complimentary tasting at Phelps in Napa Valley.

Here in NWIndiana we have been experiencing over 100 degree temps the last couple days. This is “NOT” my cup of tea! I played golf one day in it and hope to never have that experience again and I love playing golf, but not like that. 🙁

  • Anonymous

We here in NWIndiana are supposed to get some relief this weekend and next week is supposed to be much better. Can anyone say “GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE”? Remember when it used to be global warming? 😛

  • send some of tha heat over here or why not fly to sweden. A normal swedish summer week constist of one day 85F sunshine, one day 70F sunshine ,one day 75F rain, one day 50F showers, one day 80F showers and one day 30F grey. On the seventh the weather takes a rest!

  • John__J

My phone is telling me 105F today and 106F tomorrow, good grief.

  • Amen to that. It’s brutal though I must admit I’m a glutton for punishment since I’m playing a singles challenge match today at 4:30 on clay! I lost to this guy last year in the finals in straight sets so maybe he will succumb to the heat before I do. 😉

  • So how will we celebrate 3k?

  • I’ve been drinking a ton of SB lately on the deck. Yesterday I went CKC with a KJ Vintners Reserve SB that WS liked and daggone it, I must say it was quite “refreshing.”

  • Yes he is. 😉

  • AndersN: Sorry to hear the terrible news from Oslo near your neck of the woods. Horrific 🙁

  • Yep and Crazy. Seems to be 7 dead in the bomb and 10 at a shooting at a youth camp. Norwegian police says the incidents are linked and have apprehended a man. This seems to be a political act against the socialdeomcrats (in goverment and it was their youth camp) An islamic group have claimed this, but seems unlikely due to the man arrested is native norwegian and the attack on political establishment. It may be Norways Omaha bomber.. time will tell.

  • John__J

Just heard about this as well. Very sorry to hear the news.

  • John__J

Jeez Dom! Good luck, hope you take him down. No way I’d be brave enough to play a game in this heat

  • John__J

    Good question, pop a bottle?

We should definitely do something when we break into 5 digits and hit 10,000 comments.

  • Lisa S

No kidding? So it was the KJ Vintners and not the KJ Grand Reserve? I’ll have to try it!

  • John__J

I’ve got your perfect summer red right here (and it’s an oddball which I love):

Cantina Grotta del Sole, “Gragnano” 2010, from the Penisola Sorrentina area of Campania, Italy.
Made from the Piedirosso, Aglianico and Sciascino varietals, this wine is bursting with cherry and strawberry fruit. Oh and did I mention this wine is served as cold as a white? On top of that, the wine is frizzante (semi-sparkling like a moscato d’Asti, not spumante- fully sparkling), a great wine for summertime.

My company just started importing this, I had never heard about this wine area before. After this awful heat wave, I’ve decided I need to get a couple bottles for myself.

  • Lisa S

From what I hear, 100 degrees in Chicago is worse than in Calif due to high humidity. Sounds miserable. I do hope it cools off for you soon!

  • Lisa S

    Yikes! Stay hydrated!

  • John__J

I need to stress that this wine needs to be cold when you open it. I was mistakenly given a sample bottle of this. Like I said I’d never heard of it before and I popped it the first time at room temp. If you’ve ever popped a sparkling or semi sparkling at room temp before then you know you can end up wearing more wine than you drink. And my shirt definitely got a nice taste of the wine!

  • Lisa S

    Terrible news, Anders. I’m sorry.

  • Anonymous

Lisa, the humidity is what makes it unbearable. It just takes your breath away and makes it hard to breath. We did get a little rain today and cooled things off to 88 degrees. 😉

  • Sounds nice. So is it red or more pink?

  • It was even worse. 84 shot at the youth camp, 7 dead from the bomb and the man arrested is a nationalist right wing Norwegian that obiviously planned this for at least 2 years. It’s an poltical attack on the socialdemocrats of Norway as kind of protest to being to lenient with immigration especially muslim immigrants. There is crazy folks everywhere. The primeminister of Norway responded to this that they now will meet this with more democracy, more openess, more discussion about human values. I hope that will be the case and the opposite.

  • John__J

red, even magenta or purple. Not sweet though if I remember correctly, if so just a touch. Cheap too.

  • Lisa S

It’s sickening, Anders. Too horrible for words. Just read BBC online. So this sicko dressed as a policeman, rode the ferry to the island and proceeded to kill 85 innocent kids?? And this is after he killed 7 with a bomb at the government quarter? Those poor kids and their families. Unbelievable.

So true that there are crazy folks everywhere.

  • Geez, I haven’t stopped sweating all weekend long. I played Friday evening in 109 degree heat, thankfully a thunderstorm came through and postponed the beating I was taking at the hands of the weakest serve this side of the Mississippi yet everything kept coming back.

Then on Saturday, three hours of doubles in 105 degree heat and then I went to a friend’s house and I was elected to grill marinated chicken, shrimp and pork kebabs for at least 50 people though only 17 showed up. Needless to say, I was sweating like a pig and no SB or wine to cool me off or at least numb the pain.

This morning, 2.5 hours of doubles in a cool 95 degrees.

Finally, 6:10 pm pm on Sunday I am sitting down to have a crisp, chilled Emmolo CA SB.

Oh, on top of this heat wave, I pulled over far to the left at the local Harris-Teeter so the dummy next to me would not ding my car and what happened? I had parked close to a brick wall and FORGOT I NEEDED TO OPEN THE DOOR A LITTLE AND SLOWLY so what did I do? Bam!!!! I can’t chew gum and think a simple thought at the same time.

Hope all had a great weekend.

I need a cold shower. Just wish it was the result of something else than the 100+ degree heat. 😉

    Cheers!

P.S. Still can’t comprehend the horrible events in Oslo.

  • Exactly and not bad, not great, but worthy for quaffing on the deck though the last glass I had a few minutes ago was quite bad. It could be due to my lack of wine this weekend and my palate is “fresh.”

  • I’ll be having the Emmolo in a minute. I need to make up for lost time this weekend.

Oh, oh, a nice Spanish red that a friend brought over a couple weeks ago to the cookout. This is good stuff. http://www.getwines.com/sku17929.html

    Highly recommended.

  • John__J

I hope you at least won the games Dom. You must be a real masochist to put yourself through that this weekend 🙂 . Or love tennis as much as you do wine.
It’s always something silly that ends up being the cause of something like that, with a car or anything else. With me, I know I wouldn’t be all there if I had been out in the heat all weekend like you were.
So was that you’re new car that happened to too?

And I know what you mean. I don’t know what to say about what happened there. Can’t understand how anyone could commit that type of atrocity.

  • Lisa S

At the grocery store yesterday, I was eyeing the KJ vintner’s SB.. I know the chardonnay is hit and miss, so maybe that’s what happened with your last glass.. or maybe it doesn’t hold up well after day 1?

Have you had the Ferrari-Carrano Fume Blanc (SB)? You can get it at Costco or grocery store around here for $12 or 13. Always good. Just served this at a BBQ and everyone seemed to like it.

  • Lisa S

Ooohhh.. the Spanish wine sounds yummy… I’ve only had a couple of priorats.. one was good and the other wasn’t. Thanks for link, Dom.

Yesterday I stopped by my local wine shop for Austrian wine tasting. I only had about 30 min so I just tasted the whites: Two Gruner Veltliners and two Rieslings.. pretty good, especially the Gruner Veltliners, first experience with this varietal. Not bad. The mgr insisted I try the pinot noir. I told him I was afraid.. I still hadn’t recovered from scary German pinot noirs I tasted a few months ago. He said this one was better and a good deal for $20. Ummm. Not really. Yikes. Another scary pinot.
    🙂

Diamond Creek tasting this Sunday in Napa. Last of the open house dates for the year. I missed the one that was held two weeks ago.

Let me know if ya want to go, I’ll save you a ticket ….. 😉

  • Anonymous

Ya, ya i’m in 😉 San Francisco , Napa Wine Tasting, Pasa Robles tasting, LA wine tasting,

    other thoughts 😉

  • Must be nice. 😉

I have never tasted a Diamond Creek though I have a bottle in my “cave” downstairs and have been reluctant to open it. Need someone to share it with who has even heard of Diamond Creek let alone tried it in the past.

I guess I should check out the vintage to make sure it’s still in its prime.

  • Maybe a Hawaiian grapefruit tasting? 😉

  • I think it could be a little of both: masochist and love of tennis to endure the heat plus I need to stay fit and drop a few pounds so I can keep eating good foods and drinking great wines without feeling “too guilty.”

I talked to my car sales guy and he said they can repair the dings and scratches when I bring it in for my first service. So I’m more relaxed now.

Still can’t fathom what happened in Oslo and he will only get 21 years in jail?

  • Interesting you bring up Ferrari Fume Blanc (Twilight Zone music here) since it must have been one of my all-time fav whites when I was just a rookie on my wine journey. It is just good juice and I will pick one up tonight.

Tomorrow my buddy Slutman (Steve) comes over to hit some and then I plan on grilling swordfish from a recipe in this month’s “FOOD & WINE.” They recommend a Chenin Blanc but guessing the FC Fume should do the trick.

    Thanks Lisa 😉

  • Just sitting here thinking about “future trends” of wine and one I would like to see addressed more by GV since he is an advocate of social media is pairing wine with music in addition to food. Besides linking to retailers who may carry a particular wine he reviews, his new app could also link to songs on iTunes or youtube for that matter that would pair well for a given wine? So you may see something like this:

Wine: 1997 Dominus Cabernet Sauvignon http://www.wine-searcher.com/find/dominus/1997
    Food: Ribeye (red meats) http://www.mychicagosteak.com/
    Music: Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRgXUFnfKIY

  • Bengt Cyniker

Haha, nice. Well maybe Beethovens 9 th too 🙂
But a an idea. An app that recommends a tune to the wine. How long before it is launched?
