EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

I just heard it through the grape vine.

Yeah, my comments have been languishing as of late, but not entirely diminished.

  • Anonymous

I unfortunately will not be attending. I thought I was going to be able to get that day off, but there is a huge “remodeling” project going on at the winery. I just found out about this a day or two ago, nobody tells me anything.

  • Anonymous

Wow, scrolling through the last few pages, sounds like some shit went down. Considering some of the stupid awful things I have said in past “conversations” I am surprised the feds have not broken down my door yet.

  • Anonymous

P.S. I can always send you some. Most of the new vintages are our now, the Verdelho is really good. Although it did not do as well as I had hoped in the competitions we entered it into, they are all crap shoots. The 09 Touriga got Double Gold, best in region and best in class “other Red”; so that is something.

  • Lisa S

πŸ™ Oh man. You have to work on Sunday ? Would it help if I wrote a note to your Boss?? I can be creative. πŸ™‚

The Touriga sounds interesting! Just watched WLTV episode from 2008 about Touriga. I think I need to try it. So which zin did you bring to our meetup last January? Was it the Marian’s vineyard, or something else? Thx CR5.

  • Looking that one up.

Anders, it was the June 18, 2011 issue. I have it right in front of me and my bad it was a gentleman by the name of John Stimpfig not Jancis. The whole section in the Financial Times is devoted to this topic, “Buying and Investing in Wine”.

  • John__J

I’m not entirely clear on the whole thing myself. Seems like it can get a bit tumultuous in the forums sometimes.

  • I, too, have no clue. I have seldom ventured “over there” to the forums.

  • Very cool. I need to check it out. Congrats, it’s always nice to see your name in print especially for such a prestigious publication.

  • Unfortunately, though expected, it did not go well. I told Lisa about the “Rookie tasters hovering around the tents like a vulture on roadkill and the wines were not good at all. The only palatable ones were the ’07 Kenwood “Jack London” cab (quite good for 20 bones) and a German riesling which in the 90+ degree heat tasted quite refreshing.

When will people learn to get their taste and then GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY FOR THE DOMSTER! He’s queued up like a gypsy and being a gentleman when these morons jump in front of me to get to the “chocolate red wine.” The heresy of it all.

  • Thursday wine to the dinner I made. Bourgogne Les SΓ©tilles 2009 from Olivier Leflaive. A Puligny-Montrachet wine. Very little color. Nice fresh scent of yellow fruit, plum, lemon. A light note of nuts, dry grass and oak. A tiny hint of sulphur. Taste is very fresk, although first attack is in fact a bit of seet. then comes a sharp sting ripe lemon followed by a nice heat of pepper and then a new tier of starfruit with a bit of lychee, the wine stays dry and fresh. All that in seemless transition. Back end is fresh with white stone, lots of good lemon, traces of more starfruit and then lingers with that lemon . A hair watery to get 90, but 89 is good for this 20 dollar wine.

Oh the food. I made Ccconut fried shrimp with a curry and lime dip for starter, then creme boildd lemon sole with lots of chives radish, white onion and boiled new potatoes. All loight and delightful. Suited the wine very good.

  • Lisa S

    Hilarious!!

  • Ah, that chocolate and red wine…. oops you meant chocolatewine, it’s also catching the Europe in i’ts grasp. Mighty popular in England, Belgium and the Netherlands. EU has just ruled it OK so I guess all the Swedes driving to Germany will pick this up at the Border Shop emporium in Puttgarten or other places.

Me, I take a bite om my nice chocolate and then a sip of my nice wine and find true love πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

Another excellent review, Anders! The shrimp and fish sound amazing. I didn’t know you could get a decent white burgundy by a top producer for $20 – or less:
http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1070405 I may have to try it. πŸ™‚

  • Me too . . . that’s my routine. Truly amazing the number of people clamoring over it.

  • NY Pete

I hope Gary chokes on his daily grape … πŸ˜›

you guys and girls would have a blast over in the forum.

Nope, not going over there πŸ˜‰ …. it’s too cozy here πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

Congrats …. will have to see it for my self πŸ˜‰

yes, it is the beringer cab 2007 reserve. Bought it at WTSO for $79 bucks …. couldn’t pass it up. πŸ˜‰

As you have figured out by now, I love pinot noir. I probably have more PN than any other wine.. Occasionally I will try one that is not my style but may be drinkable anyway, but in the past 10 days I’ve had two different pinots that I’ve poured down the drain. Now how sad is that? πŸ™

    1. The Paring – St Rita Hills, 2009 approx $24…http://theparing.com/pinot.html
The bouquet was my first clue that we might have a problem….. high alcohol and really big fruit. On the palate: Gloppy. I think this gives California pinot noir a bad name.

2: 2006 Joseph Swan, Russian River, Saralee Vineyard – $25 (previously $35). A friend once said to me that he rarely buys anything on sale.. When I asked, “why not?”, he replied, “it’s on sale because nobody wanted it.” Ha! I think this may be the case here. Complete opposite of wine #1. High acid… Light body and tart.. lots of rhubarb. Might be OK with food, but definitely not a sipping wine.

On the bright side, I had a couple of nice whites in the past couple of weeks:
    1. Tiefenbrunner 09 Pinot Grigio: This is probably the best pinot grigio I’ve had (although I haven’t had many).. Nice fruit, minerality and weight Good value, too. Thanks, Dom. Good choice. WL offers this at a nice price, too:
    http://winelibrary.com/search.asp?search=tiefenbrunner&x=0&y=0

    2. ’09 Poet’s Leap Riesling, Columbia Valley, WA : This is an easy drinking, off-dry wine. Fresh, clean, nice acidity, apricot, pear and nice minerality. Slightly sweet. Tennispro: Agree, nice wine for the price: Costco $18

  • Broad spectrum in the wine world eh?. I have had a couple of the N01 type. You can even believe they are Pinot. dark black fruit, sugar vannilla, I’d swear it was a cab blend sometimes.

  • John__J

Tiefenbrunner is doing some great things. I need to check out their p.g. again. They do a Muller Thurgau that’s supposed to be really good and is pretty high end. Which are 2 things I don’t normally here about
Muller Thurgau so I’m interested to try it.

Have you had any Pinot’s from Le Cadeau Lisa? They’re really good. The Winemaker only does pinot noir. They’re out of Willamette. He also does a pinot called Aubichon from the same vineyards that’s really good too.

  • John__J

I can just picture that scene lol.

I try to avoid those types of things now having had some similar experiences.

  • John__J

Just as Lisa said, another awesome review Anders

  • Very nice reviews Lisa. Glad you liked the Tiefenbrunner and yes John, I recommend it for a PG. It’s not Jermann, but it’s pretty dang good juice.

I just returned from dinner at one of my favorite restaurants in the entire U.S. Yes, it is that good and I asked the maitre d’ if the owner, Leonard Logan, was around and she said yes and he was having appetizers on the porch and would introduce me. Well, it was a euphoric experience, something close to tennispro and Lisa meeting Christian Moueix. He was sitting out on the veranda with some friends and needless to say, it was magical. I was a tad overwhelmed but talked about Willamette Valley, CA cabs and he asks me my favorite wine. I tell him about my “virgin experience” with Dominus and that was the hit of the night. He then asks one of the waiters to bring out an ’04 Gabrielle Juxta Position cab which I just had with my ribeye steak and honestly, I had never heard of it but will be sure to find some now. Reviews to come over the weekend. Blow by blow, sip by sip. It was a magical time.

I also had an Alsatian Pinot Gris that really impressed me when paired with the mussels.

More to come, I need to hit the sack since I have a long drive ahead of me but I had to rush back to the cottage to tell everyone of this magical evening.

    Here’s the restaurant.

We need a Dominus trip to Cali this fall. …. πŸ™‚ Aussie just 6 months away πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa S

So true! Yeah, the first pinot was like drinking melted, high-octane jam. I love fruit forward pinot noirs, but this was over the top.

  • Lisa S

Thx John! I will add the Muller Thurgau to my list!

So I read your comment above yesterday afternoon before I left for wine tasting at K&L Redwood City and after the tasting I scanned the pinot shelves and there it was..actually two of them: Le Cadeau Oregon CΓ΄te Est 2007 and their red label which is a blend of ’06 & ’07 for $19. I bought the latter and opened it last night. Quite good..Classic Oregon pinot – tar fruit, spice, acidity.. Great with food and good value. I’d like to try one of their higher-end ’08s. Thx.

I tend to drink more California pinot since I don’t always pair with food.. more fruit forward and better sipping wines than Willamette overall, but they sure have some great wines coming from there.. I loved the 08 Penner Ash, Ponzi, Evening Land. I want to try Ken Wright, SineAnn, Domaine Serene and Shea next.

BTW: I tasted some very good wines at K&L yesterday All from Paso Robles (the tasting room was packed): Tablas Creek, Justin, Ancient Peaks, L’Aventure. πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

What a fabulous evening, Dom.. and so memorable! The restaurant looks wonderful. I’ve not heard of these wines either. “Juxta Position”.. What a great name! Looking forward to part II of this story. Details, please.

PS: “Virgin experience with Dominus” Too funny.

  • John__J

Glad you liked it. Their ’08’s are what I’ve had and they were really good. Aubichon is one of the pinot’s that’s a step up the ladder from the red label.
Then they have 4 single vineyards (or one of the 4 is a blend of the 3), Cote Est, Diversite, Equinoxe and I’m leaving one out.
Anyway they’re all from such a tiny area and they are all really different from each other but delicious. Some more meaty some more mineral, etc.
They’re one of the wineries that I think really proves how capable we are of expressing terroir in the U.S.

  • Opend a red wine today to my 100 episode of Chokladprovning med Anders. Chateau Haux Grand Reserve 2005. The premium wine from the chateau where I have incvested the hideous sum of 750 dollars πŸ˜€
A red bordeaux from Entre the Meres , AOC PremiΓ©res Cote de Bordeuax.
Sniffy sniff reveals a lot of barrel/oak. Vanilla, wood, and then loads of dark red fruit, Sweet cherry, ripe raspberry, red plum, slight notes of some herbs and spices. The oak is very obvious
Taste is initially dry, sandy, red fruit with some vanilla tone and then it evolves to a nice mix of sweet cherry and ripe raspberry with cumin and sage. Mid palate is dry with sandy tannins that bring white pepper into the mix (this wine is 3-4 years away from optimal drinking). still the wine is smooth. back end more pepper and herbs and then some tobacco and red fruit. Maybe slightly over oaked.. Medium long finish. Best wine I’ve tasted from this Chateau. 2005 being a super year I can understand with that lush fruit. This wine will be perfect with light meats and casseroles and really, really nice 2015 πŸ™‚

  • John__J

Another great review. Almost feels like I was tasting the wine

  • Lisa S

Congrats on 100 episode of Chok! Bordeaux sound luscious. Interesting that you would pair with light meats.. How about a nice steak? πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

Hi John – Well my issue of Wine Spectator finally arrived on Friday. Your name is indeed listed on page 107! Very nice! πŸ™‚

  • It feels a bit light for that and I think the wine actually is a traditional beverage of is neighbourhod, for instance lamb coocked with beans (mijote d’agneau aux mojettes) or coq au vin.

Okay, I opened a bottle of 2001 Insignia and a friend opened a bottle of Heitz 1998 Cab. Surprisingly the Heitz held up quite well but the Insignia was stellar. πŸ˜‰ No detailed notes other than it smelled great and drank rich and wonderful. Sorry, I was not in the frame of mind to take a bunch of mental notes.

Opened a 1999 Insignia about two weeks prior and that bottle or vintage seems to be fading fast.

That all I got tonight πŸ˜‰

TTF …. talk to you all soon, and I hope this weekend was great.

  • Have to take Will Phepls invitation on DG seriously, me think. πŸ™‚

  • Tuesday barbecue at friends

Served grilled halloumi cheese with red onion, tomato on white bread. It?s delish with a Chateau Haux Bordeuax Clairet 2010. (Clairet is a wine that is dark pink in style, and may be described as a full bodied and deep coloured type of rosΓ©. ) Lovely red, pink deep color. The nose id fresh and deep of raspberry, pear, grape and white pepper. White/red wine mix, yep.
Taste wise its fresh peppery, actually some tannins (from the short skin involvement) nice pear, starfruit, raspberry mix, nice acid and a peppery medium long finish.

To compare the host served a rosΓ© from Puycheric made of Syrah grapes. Light pink color, woodland strawberry on the nose with some plum and a hint of sour cherry on crushed rock. The taste is fresh , lean, a bit of acid and heat, not much fruit, a bit of lemon/lime , kind of watery finish. The clairet wins hand on

Sweet chili marinated grilled chicken with asparagus, potatoes and sweet peas for main.
Got served a Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire NV from Raoul Clerget . Your typically 4? wine from Bourgogne. A nose of dirt, basement, raspberry and some herbs. Light in color, light in taste, First of very little fruit, mid palate brings a nice acidity with some peppery heat, back end dies of quick in a raspberry, dirt mix.

Alternative served Chateau Haux 2006 Rouge Reserve de proprietere. The house wine of me and the friend. Oaky nose with red sour cherries in the mix with spice and dirt. Taste is more dirt, sweet cherry and red plum with a hint of oak and vanilla. Long semi peppery finish which spiced up the chicken a bit. Surprised that it suited the grilled dish that well. Better then the Bourgogne, definitely.

  • All this on a Tuesday night? Geez, you know how to live.

Looks and sounds like a magnificent barbeque. Is it “holiday” in your parts?

    Cheers!

  • Was the question raised if we can find the article on the online version? If so, can we “link it up Mott!” πŸ˜‰

  • Wine Strengths: California, France
    Pricing: Moderate
    Selections: 2,570
    Inventory: 19,600
    Wine Director: John Jung

I got this from the online version. Need to search for more.

    Congrats!

  • John__J

    Wow sounds great Anders!

  • John__J

lol that would be neat if he did.
I saw your post below about what you saw online. That’s the same as what’s posted in the mag too. I didn’t realize it was available to check out online though, pretty cool.

  • John__J

I understand, sometimes your not in the mood or don’t have the time to really do the detailed notes. Those are some great wines and as long as you enjoyed them, that’s the important part.

  • John__J

Don’t know how it is where the rest of you guys are, but I’d imagine Dom would agree with me when I say I’ll be real happy when this crazy heat wave is over.
