EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

Very cool! Congrats, John! Wow.. we hit 3,000 already? Good job!!

  • Lisa S

    Dan!! Hello my friend! πŸ™‚

All is good.. A quiet weekend for me.. although there is a domestic pinot noir tasting today at my local wine shop that I am looking forward to. Will report back.
I hope you’re enjoying the weekend. So glad to hear that the weather has cooled down a bit in the Chicago area. What a relief!

  • Lisa S

    So true, Anders! πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

Great story and nice way to start the weekend! Dying to hear about the Domaine Didier!!!! I want one! πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

Tennispro, where did you go?? I’m still waiting for Part 2 of Diamond Creek tasting! πŸ™‚

Hey Lisa! Glad things are good. The Pinot Noir tasting sounds like fun.

I am headed up to my favorite place for wine in the city and picking up a special occasion Bordeaux or Champagne. A close friend is having a Birthday at the end of August. He is flying out to Napa to meet with his family and has been invited to the Harlan Estate (How cool is that?) for a party to celebrate his birthday.

Us here though are throwing him a party on the 17th and I have been chosen to head into the city to pick up a special bottle of the occasion. Thank God the weather here has been great this past week.

  • Lisa S

That’s great, Dan. Let us know what you pick up for birthday bash. How does one get invited to Harlan? Your friend is a lucky guy!!

Speaking of wine in the city. When I was in Chicago last March, I popped into a food/wine shop on Michigan Ave (inside Water Tower Place) VERY expensive.. I sure hope there are less expensive places to buy wine in your neck of the woods. Sheeesh.

  • woops and then there was 3008 πŸ™‚

  • hehe, didn’t know that they where called Skins, but OK, they where good in the 80’s I think. watched a lot of NFL then Vikings and Bears was my favs then. Bears winning in 86? with the Refrigirator and Walter Payton and coach Ditka is a good memory for me, but lost track of NFL the last 15 years.

    3010 check it out

  • Lisa S

Fascinating! Did you live in the U.S. at that time??

  • Where did you find that? I was recently living in Santa Barbara and couldn’t find it anywhere!

  • John__J

I wine did hold up, btw.

  • John__J

Complexity in a wine is great, but sometimes you’ll get an aroma so distinct in a wine I’m nearly transfixed by it (Not that the wine can’t still be complex and have other aromas/flavors). That happened to me yesterday when I got canned peaches on a zinfandel.

  • Yep, it is so easy to get frozen by a scent, espcially a good one. Happens a lot to me. Hmmm… perfume makers, a wine scent!!!!

  • Nope, never lived in the states just kept up with everything “english” since I studied a little at university.

Lisa, my friend has been a loyal customer of Harlan for many years and has been on their Mailing List the same amount of time. He happened to write Harlan to let them know he was going to be in the Napa area for his Birthday and would like to come visit. Thinking he wouldn’t hear back from them. A couple weeks had past and he received a letter inviting him and his family. They are planning a sit down dinner and wine tasting for his Birthday. What a lucky guy and all I want are details! πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa S

Wow, Harlan is a class act. Your friend has spent some major $$$ on Harlan over the years and what a nice way to thank him. Great story, Dan. You must share the details with us (when you get them)!

  • Anonymous

I will share. We are having his party Wednesday evening then he leaves Saturday for the Left Coast. I can’t wait to hear myself.

What is going on over at DG? Has Gary’s Uncle passed? I know he has said he was going through some things, but I thought it was his businesses. Apparently, from what I gather from DG his uncle passed last night? If this is so, then my deepest and sincerest condolences.

  • That’s what BS Kough said. I dunno. Watching the latest show now.

  • Congrats! Now we need to find a time, place and wine to open and celebrate!

  • I believe I have a bottle of Harlan or is it Staglin? It’s one of those “families.”

  • John__J

You won’t have to twist my arm!

  • Gary tweeted that his uncle had died in a car crash , last night (last night) so I guess that is confirmed and Trouty just posted that they are filming an ep this afternoon.

  • John__J

Wow. Surprised he’s actually going to go forward with an episode today.

  • Lisa S

    The show must go on?

Poor Gary! I hope the show was pre-taped.

  • Doesn’t look like he has.

  • I had a Portugese white wine from Douro tonight that was surprisingly good. If you can find it, by all means buy it.

We had a Birthday party for my friend this evening before he leaves for NAPA and a meeting at Harlan. It was a great night with good friends and wine. The friend who’s birthday it was surprised us all with a double magnum 1987 Castello D’Albola Chianti Classico. WOW! Who brings a double magnum to his own birthday party. What a class act! As much as I do not like Chianti this was smooth and very tasty. I was not blown away, but close to it. It was light red in color with that brown tinge around the edges. The smell was very earthy with raspberries and some smokiness. The taste was very smooth, were everything was in balance. It had that taste of a well made Pinot Noir, hardly any tannins at all and just a touch of the dryness. It tasted of red berries and cherries. A very nice bottle of wine which our friend did not have to bring, but I am sure glad he did just to experience a classic.
I my humble opinion, I would have to rate this a 94.

After we finished the 1986 we had a 2007 Cecchi “Teuzzo” Chianti Clasico Riserva. It was a very nice bottle of wine but not up to par with the 1987. The same classic chianti tastes and the smell was a bit funktified. Still all in all well made wine with the tannins, fruit, and all the little nuances in check. I give this another 5-7 years in the bottle.
I score this a 89 but with good potential.

For the final Chianti of the evening we had a 2009 Monrosso Chianti. Again all the classic chianti tastes the others had but just not well rounded. A little too much tannins and the fruit just didn’t pop. I just attest this to the young age and after have the 1986 Castello Chianti, I had a feeling it was all down hill after that. I would score the a 87.

All in all it was an enjoyable evening and renewed my interest in chianti’s in order to give them another chance.

    TTF

    NOSTROVIA!

  • There you go. A Chianti from 87 (or was it 86) in a double mag. So was the trip a 94 or the Chianti and if not a 94 blows you away what will dear Dan?
Sounds like a nice wine moment anyway.

  • Alls well, but I drink far to little wine… Must “remedy” that soon.

  • Trouty missinformed us!!!

  • John__J

Cool, I’ll keep my eye open for that.

  • Lisa S

What a great evening and, yes, the guest of honor is a class act for bringing a double magnum of an ’87 or ’86 Chianti. What a guy! How often does that happen?? GREAT review, too! Hope you all had a nice Italian meal to go along with the Chiantis. Thanks for sharing, Dan. πŸ™‚

Sorry, It was a 1987. I have “EDITED” above. πŸ™‚

  • So I prepared a three course dinner, as I always do on a thursday. Shrimp chili salsa, beefsteak with red wine sauce and onions and blueberry pie to follow that. I served myself a Brunus Blend 2007 from Montsant region. Soft, smooth berries tones of mulberry and a lot of blueberry and cherry with vanilla from the barre- Nice rounded acidity. Itthat offers great dry mouithfeel and a sweet mature appearance, almost a party wine, maybe a tad to dry for just party πŸ™‚ With the food it was a really creamy element. Montsant region is located in Catalonia, 70 miles mil southwest of Barcelona. Grapes Carignan, syrah and garnacha. 88 p for me.

Tomorrow there will be a typical swedish august celebration. Crayfish party! Some white wine as starter then lots of crayfish, schnaps, some strong cheese pie, mugs of lager, more crayfish and vodka and the in the wee hour of the night/morning some beer and anchovies gratin. All a Swedish tradition during cool august nights. Gettting drunk that is πŸ™‚

  • Crayfish! Ohmigosh! We devour that delicacy over here down yonder in Nawlins!

    Good eatin’

  • Notes from yesterdays Crayfish party!

Cremant Marques de Haux (Cremant de Bordeaux NV) $7
    70% SΓ©millon 30% Muscadelle. Alcohol level : 11.5%
Nice luvely bubbles and a fairly persistent foam that matches well with gold and pale colour. On the nose : acacias flower and citrus fruits combined with flavors of spices and a roasted component. Fresh dry mouth feel . Nice balance with acidity as a main factor. Pear, apple, slight taste of bread . Finish is medium long and have a bit of white pepper and fruit.
86p, not bad for that price πŸ™‚

    CuvΓ©e Jean-Paul 2009
VdP des CΓ΄tes de Gascogne 60% colombard and 40% ugni blanc.
The nose have a slightly aromatic scent with notes of green apple, lime and grass Taste is very fresh and dry, flavor with hints of green apple, melon and lime, mid on its is a good peppery feel and the back end nice and clean. Really nice budget wine.
    87 p $ 9

    ChΓ’teau Suduiraut 2007
A slightly sulphurous nose here, and behind that an attractive fruit nose with , pure elderflower character,a good amount of honey. Smooth and elegant texture, but wow, that sugar explosion at first was not what I expected. Coats my palate so much that it tastes like suger water with som honey added extra!! I think I have to retaste this one later. 130g/l residual sugar I think it was.

I?m sure it?s no help to your palate that one had been eating crayfish, drinking vodka and beer and also had an impromtu whiskey tasting

Okay, This week I’m gonna bring it on WLTV …. who’s in ???

    TTF πŸ˜‰

  • John__J

30% Muscadelle on the Cremant, that’s interesting. I don’t recall seeing that much Muscadelle in hardly any Bordeaux’s.
