EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

I attended an 08 bordeaux tasting a couple of months ago. Austere wines.. nice but expensive… They need time (lots of time). The prices have skyrocketed – I blame it on China.

On another note, the ’09 white burgundies have arrived.. I tasted 5 of them yesterday.. What a treat! For the first time there was a white burg under $25 that I would buy.. Paul Pernot Bourgogne (actually this was a 2010). Another really good one: ’09 Dominique Cornin Pouilly-Fuisse “Les Chevrieres”.. $28. Au revoire 🙂

  • the 08 is cheap compared to what the 09 will cost. I blame Parker for giving 09 to high points and China for buying everything in sight.
I got some nice 09 Borgogne a coupple of white and reds. Not ready to taste them yet.

  • Lisa S

You’re absolutely right about Parker (and China ). Oui, the 09s will cost a fortune!

  • Anonymous

Yes, I did know that 😉

  • Congrats to Mott and his G-Men! Great comeback victory vs the Pats in Foxboro!

  • Anonymous

Thanks Bill! WOOT! That was a sweet win!

  • Anonymous

I thought I just read the other day in the WSJ that the prices have hit their peak and we should start seeing them coming down. I think what they were saying is that China has been saturated and they are not willing to pay those prices any longer. 🙂

  • Lisa S

No kidding? That’s great news! Thx. Dan!

  • so the 2011 vintage will be under 200 bones across the board, Yipeeee 😉

  • In two days the annual Beaujolais Nouveau hits the stores. I must admit, I’m a softie and will go down to my local wine shop to celebrate the harvest and to shmooze with my homies. To us wine geeks, it’s almost like Christmas or Hanukkah.

Plus, I always love the label, you can’t beat the price and it’s fun. What more can you ask of a wine? Yes, complexity, yada yada but hey, it’s fun.

    Cheers to Nouveau!

  • Of course the Dominus wins. 🙂

  • 200 bones for a wine that no one has a clue (or some semblance from someone from a barrel) of what it will be like in 10-20 years. I don’t know about you, but I’m investing my 200 bones in a wine I can enjoy now or in the next 3-5 years. Life is too short. I probably have more wine than I will be able to consume in my lifetime so no need for me to stock up on more.

If there was such a thing as “Babe Futures” then I may put down my hard-earned cash on that, not a pipe dream ’09 or ’10 Bordeaux.

    Cheers!

  • Lisa S

My feelings exactly, re bordeaux wine! King JF needs to read your comment! I’ve told him the exact same thing (about drinking what you already have and that life is short)!

    Umm.. Babe futures? Really? Haha!

  • Lisa S

Agree, it is fun and a nice tradition before Thanksgiving.. Yeah, simple wines and not something I want to drink year round, but they are fun. Cheers!

  • Lisa S

My new iPhone 4S arrived today (yes, I finally bought an iPhone). Looking forward to making the transition from flip-phone to smartphone! Will attend a Nickel & Nickel wine tasting tomorrow night at Beltramo’s, and my Sea Smoke allocation arrives on Thurs. This is a good week. 🙂

  • play, play, and more play. When do you work 🙂

  • Used to be a crazy situation here when the release was. People lining up for hours to get the bottles, but that have died down, Swedes tend to buy BiBs instead and mostly of the worst kind. I guess that makes a diferent feeling all year round.

Me, I go to Stockholm next week and buy 08 bordeuax’s that are released on Monday and it is not BiB

  • Agree 100% with you Dom. The problem is that is kind of close impossible to buy old wine where I live. And I love old wine. Got lucky and got hold of a 83 Pichon Comtesse and a 94 Margaux at an auction yesterday. 200 dollars each, but who cares when they are opend and poured…mmmmmmm

What? The POP work? Sever thy tongue knave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😉

Lisa S, speak for yourself. As I approach my 65th birthday on the 17th of this month I’m feeling pretty immortal. Think 95-100 is in the cards once I realized the stroke couldn’t kill me, the Fremont Unified School District bus couldn’t kill me (my mobility scooter wasn’t so lucky) and the lady coming out of the blind alley couldn’t kill me (scooter #2 not so lucky) 😉 So, I say lay them down boys and girls. Although Parker has been backtracking on his 08 points from his initial uber bullish position on them.

  • served it a german reisling and a french chinon instead, enough said!

  • Anonymous

ya the man …. nice call !!! That was in reply to andersN post of german reisling & french chinon 😉

  • Anonymous

    miss beltramos ;-(
good call on the 4s 😉
nickel and nickel rock normally ….. how was the sea smoke ????

  • Lisa S

Nickel & Nickel tasting was great.. Poured 12 wines (all 08 cabs). What a treat. They are a division of Far Niente, but you probably know that. They recently added a pinot noir to their portfolio, “En Route” Russian River. Have not tried it yet.

The Sea Smoke box and packaging alone was the best I’ve seen. The wine will need to lay down for at least 6 months. I have a couple of 08s that might be ready to try! I’ll let you know.

How was the Opus One from last weekend??????

  • Lisa S

POP needs to work. How else would I pay for KB and Sea Smoke? 🙂

  • Lisa S

Hmmm..You many not be so lucky when I drive into town!

  • Anonymous

Princesses don’t work, they have engagements 😉

  • Anonymous

Do ya think I’m stupid? I’m squarely behind the concrete barricades when that happens.

Lisa to the CHP officer, “Gee, I just didn’t see the little scooter.”
Officer to Lisa, “That explains the first set of tire tracks but what about the other four sets?”

  • Lisa S

Nice. Apparently I didn’t get that memo! 😉

  • Todays wine: Lucaniacus ? Lalande Pomerol 2007
In Lalande de Pomerol the family Saby a small vineyard, very old, namned after the villa of Gallo-Roman poet Ausonius. An old mosaic has also been found in the field in 1845, whose pattern adorns the label.
The 2007 wine is lush and dark, entirley Merlot based. The aroma suggest blueand red fruit with forest floor, rosted oak, some mineral and spice. The flavor, soft and fresh, is medium-bodied with good tannins. A silky feel followed by velvety tannins. Already very harmonious, First fruit, then oak, then white pepper ,then more fruit. Nice wine with roast and creme gravy I was served. Medium long finish with a hint of plum and raspberry jam.

  • Happy Birthday Gary!

    Cheers!

P.S. All our teams lost. 🙁

    Suck for Luck

  • Verrrry good. Sea Smoke; what a label, winery name and delectable nectar.

Hope all is well with everyone. I miss you guys and gals.

    Cheers!

  • I hate to admit this, but I’m a dummy. I walked into my wine shop all excited and lo and behold, it was relatively quiet. Hmmm, what’s wrong here? I walked up to Susan, the wine consultant, to ask “Where’s the balloons and confetti to celebrate the arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau?” and she whispers in my ear, “Dom, it’s the THIRD week in November. You’re a week early.” Of course, I still picked up some wine but alas, no Beaujolais Nouveau. 🙁

I will be there THIS Thursday for sure.

    Cheers,
    Dumb Dumb

  • Happy Bday GV

  • Ballons? Confetti? Where is this place ? 🙂

  • Lisa S

Poor Andrew Luck may be out of luck after Stanford’s game against Oregon on Sat. I hope not. He’s a great kid!

  • Lisa S

Yeah, no kidding… They are easily excited or anxious to celebrate!

  • Lisa S

    Happy Birthday, Gary!
Hope you had a wonderful day with your lovely family!
    xo

You inspire me to work harder, thank you!

  • All the great ones have had bad games. I don’t think his aura was tarnished too much.

As long as the Colts get him, I will be fine with that.

    Suck for Luck

  • We on the East Coast need any excuse to celebrate. These are dire times so we’ll leave it up to some marketing ploy by George Duboeuf to pull us out of the doldrums even for a few minutes.

See “Special Event” in red at the left.

  • Wow, I thought I was the Studman but you win that honor hands down!

I’m recanting on the “laying down” period of my wine journey. I started to do that about ten years ago and I have a ton of stuff I have forgotten about!

I will lay down a couple gems but I’m not buying a case of futures to celebrate my 80th birthday. Heck, I may not live that long or know what it is!!!

  • I wish I had a wine store like that here i karlstad….
hey I looked at their Connoisseur’s “Fine Wine” Selections http://www.finewine.com/finewine/rarewinepage.cfm and find that the Van Duzer is the bottle my brother and sis in law gave me when i visited them in october. Cool 🙂

  • Tomorrow is Beaujolais Nouveau release date! They are coming over on the Concorde! Oops, they don’t fly it anymore. 🙁

    Cheers!

  • Lisa S

Love your enthusiasm! It’s scheduled for Saturday at my local wine shop. Will have to compare notes.

PS: Flowers wine tasting (chards and pinot noirs) at K&L in Redwood City on Friday.. not sure I’ll make it, but will try. I know you like Flowers.

  • Hurray for the King today

  • Lisa S

Happy Birthday, King JF!! (and many, many more!!)
    Have a wonderful day!

Happy Belated B-Day Gary! You are Still the Man!

  • Thank you Randall for the Supplication. Had a great beer tasting tonight. 8 beers from a danish micro brewery http://www.skagenbryghus.dk/?Vores_produkter and then Russian river Brewing supplication on top. Almost all good ones. The Supplication a surprise of high acid and mellowed cherry with some strawberry tart flavors. My guest started talking about champagne, wkich is spot on from the second fermantation in the bottle. I think I have to start an import business just to bring really cool stuff to this country 🙂
