EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

Watching older episodes takes on a different meaning now.
For instance I haven’t tried nearly enough Taurasi or aglianico for that matter, so I bought one today to have tonight (Cantine Antonio Caggiano, Macchia Dei Goti 2002 Taurasi).
Anyway, I figured I’d watch the WLTV Taurasi episode, #977.

It takes on a different feel now when you see an episode like that where Gary reference’s how he’s getting close to a 1000 episodes. In this case he mentions how it would be nice to dust off the old laid back Friday couch as it’s been a while and you get nostalgic as you approach episode 1000.

Anyway I say it takes on a different feel now because you know now when he made that reference he knew full well he’d be ending the show soon. Whereas prior to 1000, it was just a momentous thing for the show and you weren’t expecting it to all end.

  • Going a bit nerdy today.Turkish wine. Grapes: Bogazkere and ร–kรผzgรถzรผ. Kavaklidere Selection 2007. Scent of sour cherry, wood, garden herbs and cranberry. Maybe is the some light licorice as well.

Medium to light wine, well light actually, ruby red seethroug in the glass. Taste is dry and red fruit driven with hints of cedar wood and thyme and sage. As I said, light, the tannins is light and dry and transit from mid palate to back end. The sour cherries as well

Strange grapes, light wine, guess it?s good with a lot of middle eastern food. But it will not hit my buy again list

  • Lisa S

Sounds like the Turks are way behind the Greeks in wine making.

I bought a CdP recently (from WTSO online) 07 Tiara for $25.. Very odd wine, sounds like your Turkish wine actually. Not CdP like. Very light, sour cherry.. I waited until the next day to see if it would improve, but only slightly (down the drain it went). The next day I opened a pinot noir that I also ordered from WTSO.. I had never heard of it (William Knuttel 08 reserve) for $20… Very minty, a bit more body than the CdP, but there was either a strong sulphur taste or maybe just flaw.. Down the drain it went. Soon thereafter I canceled my online subscription to WTSO. I’m happy now. ๐Ÿ™‚ There are just too many good wines available locally at a good price for me to risk buying these “incredible deals” online.

  • John__J

Very cool, I’ve had a straight ร–kรผzgรถzรผ from Kavaklidere. Reminded me of gamay crossed with zweigelt.

  • John__J

You have my empathy Lisa. I went 0 for 2 this recently too.
Bought a lackluster white Burgundy yesterday followed by a very unripe dry Vouvray today. That Vouvray (Christophe Thorigny 2010 Sec) is probably one of the most acidic wines I’ve ever had. I could feel it stripping the enamel off my teeth with every sip.

  • Lisa S

Yikes, John!!! I’ll be sure to stay away from that Vouvray.. My teeth hurt just thinking about it!

I had an 06 Paul Hobbs Russian River Chardonnay that was definitely past its drinking window.. not very good unfortunately (honey-like, viscous, did not pair well with food and difficult to drink. Very sad.

Beaujolais tasting today was fun though! They had a few Cru wines along with the Nouveau so it was interesting.

I hope we both have better luck over Thanksgiving. I may have to open a bottle of Sea Smoke or Sojourn pinot noir to make up for a lackluster week.. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Good, get rid of the bad stuff. But I tend to go for the buzz sometimes instead of dumping it down the drain ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Me like the acid ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Anonymous

    Wow … I loved the Knuttle 08.

I too buy at times from WTSO but I always check cellar tracker before I buy to see if its worth the risk. Just bought a 05 Broman Napa wine that is over delivering ๐Ÿ˜‰

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with you wine … we all have at some point ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Lisa S

It’s OK, the wine I had tonight just made up for the entire week!!!!!!

I just had dinner at Jardiniere in SF… ’04 Corison Cabernet Saugivnon, by the glass ($18 and worth every penny. It was a big-ass glass). I’ve wanted to try Corison for a long time, especially after Anders raved about. I must say it was the highlight of my dinner. Very elegant wine.. soft tannins. I think it’s up there with the 01 Dominus.. K&L just had a write up about Corison in their monthly newsletter.. They said the 01 was best, 04 ready to drink, but 05 had a bit more structure.. (I think Anders bought the 05).. Anders, I hope you’re reading this. ๐Ÿ™‚ Good “value” at $75 locally.

You loved the 08 Knuttel? No kidding? How interesting.

  • DUH!

  • Reading it, loving it! Did I tell you or what? .
Yes the 05 I bought from the winery. 06 I found in Stockholm the other day, 75 bones too ๐Ÿ™‚ . Tasted the 02, 05, 06 and the Kronos 05 at the winery and some other stuff. Can’t wait to have a nice dinner and serve the wine.

  • Lisa S

Yes, you did and thank you. I bet the Kronos was wonderful. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ll have to visit tasting room soon!

  • Wow, just a little bit emotional. Nice one Gary. I hadn’t been on the site for a while (I hate wine, but love your energy) and wanted some inspiration for a site I’m building of my own. I hadn’t even realised you were no longer running the show. Off over to your new site now to muse some more … do live the look and feel though.

  • Maybe its because the Greeks have alot of time on their hands lately and the Turks are trying to oust Assad from power but that being said, I have enjoyed some Greek wines this past year.

  • Hi John:

I had a cooking demo this past Saturday at L’Auberge and this was one of the wines featured that they paired with seared Nantucket Bay scallops. I liked it so much that I had to buy some before I left. Try this if you can find it and let me know what you think.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  • Wow, a lady who remembers what I like. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes, I love Flowers and they are really nice people. I will be uncorking one on Turkey Day away from the riff raff.

Has anyone heard of “Black Cat” cab from CA? I just read about it in the Food section of the Washington Post and it sounds yummy. I may need to stop at MacArthur tomorrow and pick up a bottle.

  • Happy Thanksgiving to My Fellow Vayniacs!

Hope life is treating everyone well.

    Cheers!

  • Hate wine yet venture to and post on a wine site? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Good luck over at the “new site.” It’s a ghost town though comments always welcomed to try and keep it alive.

  • So I got a mail from Winelibrary today. There databese with credit card ingo got hacked. And I got two very odd transaction om my account Saturday. I thought it to be bad hotel peeps somewhere in the world but now it turns out someone in China hacked WL . Go figure. The only site I have bought online from abroad is hacked…

  • Oh is it a holiday for you now, thursday is it?

Have a good wine and stay of that red thingy in the bags, bottles only ๐Ÿ™‚

  • John__J

    Happy Thanksgiving Dom!

  • John__J

    Happy Thanksgiving guys and gals!

I’ll be seeing my family for the first time on Thanksgiving in 12 years, looking forward to it (I was working restaurants the past 12).

I’ll be bringing some wine of course (one thing I love about being the “wine guy” in the family is they always ask me to bring wine, which means I don’t have to cook!), but the one I’m excited about bringing is a 5 puttonyos Tokaji. I haven’t had one of those in too long.

  • Lisa S

Sorry, Anders. My card was hacked, too, as well as a few other Vanyiaks. Glad to hear that new WL site will not store credit card info. I didn’t like that they did this without my permission.

  • What’s for dessert?

  • Yep, same here. I had some young punk gamer using my number. Thank goodness the credit card company recognized the “anomaly” and called me to confirm. Now, if the hacker had used it to register for “900” numbers or sites of that content, they could have used the card for months! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • And a Happy Thanksgiving to you my friend!

  • HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL THE VAYNIACS!

    Word.

  • I committed a crime today. I open a 2009 Bordeaux from “my” chateau. Chateau Haux Reserve de Propriรฉtaires rouge. The special members wine you get when owning some shares. 09 being a stellar vintage according to most wine nerds. well for Haux it wasn’t that good, they got a hailstorm that destroyed 80% of the crop so 09 they only made this red wine. Usually they do 3 levers of wine, the grand reserve, the reserve de Propriรฉtaires and a regular red.
So I opened a bottle and it is actually approachable, red sweet fruit, toffee vanilla from the oak, some musk and dirt and then plum and herbs to boot. Taste is almost jammy, yet a good acid streak that balance the fruit. Bold fruit and velvety tannins with white pepper and caramel. Dry back end with merlot characters of blue fruit and cab streaks of graphite.
Hmm will 09 last or is just lush and read to drink already. Got 3 magnums and 5 regular bottles left so it is just to wait and see. This one was good. I
    I’ll pour another glass ๐Ÿ™‚

  • John__J

That Tokaji and some cheese. That’ll be the dessert I have at least.

  • Randall

You are very welcome, my friend. Imho the Supplication and the Consecration from the Russian River Brewing Co. are two of the best beers brewed in the US, certainly some of the top 3 or 4 sour beers made here… and I am not alone in this opinion. ๐Ÿ˜‰
I’m glad you guys enjoyed it. I just hope we can meet up again!
p.s. And I’ve had some absolutely Great micro-brews from Scandinavia in the last couple of years, as well. Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Denmark all showed quite well. The least of these was still in the 30s on the BJCP scale (similar to the WS scale, but add 50 pts) for me, so all were quite nice.

  • Randall

So THIS is where everyone’s been hiding lately! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Just came back from DG and MAN, am I ever full… Me and my knighted friend Sir Spamalot had a spam sandwich, some spam and eggs, a nice big ‘SLT’ sandwich, some egg salad spamwiches, spam over spam, grilled spam, fried spam, some battered Southern-fried spam, Black Forest spam, some spamcakes and bacon, smoked spalmon, a custom roll of spamshi, spamscuits and gravy, a triple-layer spamcake and a side of spam… all washed down with Spamade! While singing *spam spam Spam SPAM spam spam Spam SPAM* of course…

  • And I have been tasting American brewery’s as often as I can. In cool storage right now:
    Yeti Imperial stout
Flying dog K-9 Cruiser winter ale
    Ommegang Abbey ale
    North Coast Grand Cru

Hope to taste them from now until christmas.

  • John__J

What do you mean hiding lately?
We never left Randall. Nice to see you over here.

  • Lisa S

    Happy Birthday, John J !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope you are celebrating with something nice in your glass.

  • Fridays wine, Capitel de Roari Amarone della Valpolicella 2008. Scent of raisin, earth, cummin, tar, pine nuts. Color inbetween puprle and brick red. Mouthfeel full. Dried plum cherries and barrel on the palate. Back end actually a little coffee bitter, and not the good kind. Taste feels thinner and awkward. There is no structure, just alcohol and fruit. maybe it is a a wierd place right now, to young or it’s really a sub par amarone.

  • Anonymous

Happy Belated Birthday John! Even though I did wish you HB on FB the day of. I hope your glass was always full with all kinds of grape goodness. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • John__J

Popped the bottle of Abacus I had from Z D winery last night. It was their 1st bottling, which was a blend of their cabernet’s from their ’92-98 vintages I think.
Great cab, but honestly I was disappointed in it overall with all the hype Abacus gets and the price it commands.

Also had a Meursault from Arnaud Ente, “Les Petits Charrons”, 2006 that was fantastic. not as rich as I would have expected, but still great.

  • Sunday dinner wines.
Domaine Vieux du Lazaret CdP 2007
Bright ruby color. Scent raps berry, strawberry and a hint of flowers mixed with earth and herbs. It medium bodied, concentrated with good acidity. Taste is lots of the red fruit and a nice pinch of white pepper and herbs. The tannins is soft but evident. Back end a bit earthy and with a nice structure and balance between fruit and oak. Lush almost jamy is the overall sentiment

    Cave de Tain Mermitage 2003
Had this 2 years ago and then it was a tannic monster with too much pepper and oak. Today a nose to die for. Black and red fruit. Lots of dried plum, black cherry and that mixed with lingonberry and cranberry. Roasted charcuteries, pepper and spice to accompany that. Clear, large deep maroon core with a small red/white/ruby rim.

On the palate silky, lush and with the food just great. Good fruit with plum and lingonberry as dominant feature. Nice acid that are not to sharp. The fruit is lush and in quantity Mid on some strict tannins but the oak is moderate and very well integrated. Tannins don’t stand out or lack anything round this out seamlessly. white pepper with a structure to last longer-Back end tight and nice fruit and oak. Subtle black pepper builds on a long finish and a very nice touch of cacao.

The food ? Butter simmered chanterelle on crostini seasoned with parmeggio cheese as appetizer. Minced moose pattys filled with feta cheese and basil and a creme sauce made of onion, tomato and basil served with mash.

  • Lisa S

You know how to live, Anders! Fantastic review! Now I have to open one of my ’07 CdPs. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • So they use a solera type technique? But cabs from 92-98, well that kind of old if the fruit is sub par. But intriguing concept for a napa cab ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Friends that treated us like this (well I brought the 2003 hermitage) I’m keeping my CdP 07 chilling . Not opening anyone until next year.

  • Lisa S

Okay, whew! I have been tempted to pop one of the ’07s but will be patient as well. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • John__J

It is a solera technique. The idea is each vintage being more complex, etc. like traditional solera technique wines. They’re up to their 13th or 14th bottling now.

  • Lisa S

Tuesday night wine: Antucura Calcura vineyard 2006 – Argentina.
50% merlot, 40% cabernet, 10% malbec. Available at Wine Library and K&L – approx $15. Good value wine. Medium bodied, earthy with an herbal note, a bit gamey. Not a fan of cabs/merlots from Argentina, but was pleasantly surprised by this one. Recommended by King JF. Thanks, John.

  • Boy, do I miss my nightly fix of wine banter and GV’s energetic, informative videos. So I need to find a sub and have stumbled across this gorgeous young lady http://www.mywineschool.com where every Wednesday you can taste along with a reasonably priced wine AND interact via a chatroom. Kinda cool. That is something I always thought would have been great for WL or DG but alas, it was not meant to be. ๐Ÿ™

Hope everyone is coping with the holiday madness and you are missed.

Suck for Luck (they are succeeding)

    Cheers!

I’m sorry I haven’t been very sociable lately but my days are presently ruled by a three year old. Very definitely an Alpha three year old ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hope you all are having a great holiday season!
