EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

  • Thursday, what to eat and drink. No one in my household made an attempt to go to the store. It’s raing cats and dogs and it is +2 C, almost freezing. So I check out the fridge and cupboard. Well it turn out really good. Risotto with smoked ham and cherry tomato stew. Risotto demands a red wine..
    Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico 2008
Smell is really full of cherry, red cherry, black cherry, cherry pits and some nuances of a spicy aroma with hints of oak plum, sage, sheeps butt and nuts.
Spicy flavor, some cherry, yes sweet and sour ones, lots. Some plum and oak on the mid palate. Back end a bit of dry chocolate. Good lush wine, maybe a tad to lush , you know the sweet kind everyone likes. But at 20 dollars this rivals any 30-35 dollar chianti out there. I’m happy. Hope you all are as well.

Yes, Anders, my grandson Johnny. He’s a Jekyl & Hyde at this point. But when he’s good he’s VERY engaging.

  • Lucky you. A three year old is the best. They really get you smiling and crying at the same time and all those crazy questions that make you doubt your own ability to think smart. Have a nice weekend John and Johnny πŸ™‚

  • Whatever happend to our episodes. Shouldn’t we make one each and post somewhere just to spoof a little?

  • Randall

Andrew Luck only runner-up?! I call ‘FOUL’!
But p.s. Dominus… That might make him a little bit cheaper to scoop up…

  • Suddenly left alone a wednesday evening I heat up some sunday leftovers, make a new wine sauce to it and open a bottle of a fairly inexpensive bottle of wine . The only one I could find was Chateau Haux 2006 Grand reserve.
Opened to soon it turns out.
This Bordeuax wine is way to you to be drunk now. Lots of black fruit and oak on the nose and that is also the case on the palate. Black fruit but to much oak and tannins. Dry, tight, woody, did I say tight. The rest of the case I own will be forgotten two years before even trying to drink that again. There is potential with that tight structure and black fruit. Only time will tell.

This just points to my dilemma. I have no buzz wines for a wednesday evening on my own. Damn all that buying and trying quality wines. It will ruin me. ( on the plus side, I won’t get hammered so often)

  • Lisa S

Too funny, Anders! I have the same problem, so I feel your pain. Too many bottles to drink later.. and not enough for right now or mid-week!

  • is this universal for wine geeks?

BV 2008 Tapestry ( $35 )- Drinks better than almost all the $70 + wines I’ve had over the past 12 months πŸ˜‰ ….. TTF – I’ll keep it simple – Find it, Buy it, Drink it !

    Merry Xmas to all !

  • Anonymous

Break in to your stash now! Why wait on most bottles ??? You can always buy more πŸ™‚

  • Anonymous

Yes, it’s hard to hold off on some of those French wines that need time. Your patience will be paid off later thou!

You just need to buy some more New World wines that are ready to go on release πŸ™‚ That how I get around that “problem”

  • Anonymous

Merry xmas and good luck keeping that Alpha 3 yr old in check !

  • Anonymous

I still think you should put out a wine video. I know you have what it takes and if ya need some funding TF are here for you πŸ˜‰

Like the Old Nike-e slogan said – JUST DO IT !!!!

Merry Xmas and hope your killing them on the courts!

  • Anonymous

ZD Abacus is not where you want to go for that price point …. Try the Dominus 2001 …. It drinking so well right now it’s “scary” πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

Where ya been ??? We miss ya over here πŸ˜‰

  • I agree! I doubt he comes on the cheap. It will be a dilemma come draft day for the Colts but all depends on whether #18 will be able to come back.

  • I think I may take TP’s advice and Just Do It! Believe it or not, I had started a screenplay of sorts for the spoof and I can either post it on ustream or youtube.

If I decide to do it, I will let everyone know so they can give me some ideas on what wines so we can all taste along.

  • Should I wear a tennis outfit or #18 Colts jersey with a Vayner T-shirt underneath?

  • BTW, yes, kicking butt on the courts. Indoors now instead of outside on clay which suits my game.

  • Lisa S

Wow- I need to find it asap! I’ve not had Tapestry in years but loved it way back when. Thanks.

Merry Christmas, TP! Nice of you to show up now and then. πŸ™‚ hee hee.

  • Lisa S

There you are! I was about to send a search party to Sacramento. Yeah.. you’re right.. Life is short – drink the good stuff!

  • Colts of course πŸ˜€

  • But the new world have great ageing wines to…. But I working around that, buying old wine at auctions. Just off to collect a Latour 85 and a Mouton Rotschild 94 that me and two other fellows chipped in to buy and drink now, or in a week…

  • John__J

Ahh Tennis! I wish you jad told me that 2-3 years ago when I bought it!

2007 Conn Creek Cab Sauv, a very nice wine. $20, a surprising well rounded Cab at a great price point! Good balance of Tannins, Smoke, Blackberry, Forrest Floor, Blueberry.

So nice to post back here with good people! πŸ˜‰

    Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Vineyards: A dry winter led to an early bud break and a temperate, rain-free spring. Warm temperatures in mid-August hastened ripening temporarily, but an unusually cool September and early October slowed maturation so that Bordeaux varietals ripened steadily and slowly. The effects of the 2007 climate were balanced ripeness, natural acidity and mature, developed tannins.

Fruit from Collins Holystone Vineyard in the St. Helena AVA, owned by Conn Creek Winery founders Bill and Kathleen Collins, forms the heart of the 2007 blend. The vineyard enjoys a warm climate, and is a consistent early-ripening site. Long days of temperate weather during harvest created flavor complexity and full maturity in the vineyard?s small berries.

The remainder of the blend is comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from appellations within the broader Napa Valley, including Stag?s Leap District, Mt. Veeder, Atlas Peak, Spring Mountain, Yountville, Rutherford and Oakville.
    ALC: 14.5% TA: .55g pH: 3.85

So are you guys drinking anything spectacular during the weekend?

  • Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

@Anders: I received an ’05 Bordeaux as a gift that I may try. I’m battling the onset of a cold so hopefully by this weekend it will be gone so I can do a real “sniffy sniff.” πŸ™‚

    Cheers!

P.S. Has anyone heard of VineyardFresh? I won a can of it for scoring the highest on a wine quiz at My Wine School so I plan on trying it out.

  • Oh! Oh! I almost forgot. Does last weekend count? I went to the holiday party where five years or so ago I was introduced to an ’88 Dominus that blew me away that I got goosebumps. That story, remember? Well, I returned to this year’s party and I took along a magnum of ’89 Dominus. I told my friend I would not be embarrassed if it were dead but asked if he would do me the honors of opening it. Well, he did and guess what? The bouquet was simply awe-inspiring. It was the talk of the party though on the palate it had waned quite a bit. The sniffy-sniff and the taste on the palate was quite different but alas, the magnum was gone in a hurry.

    Other wines we tried:

1997 Chat Montelena Cab (magnum) Amazing nose though still a tad tight

2001 Broman cab (magnum) Everyone loved this wine. Nice tannins, smooth mouth feel with dark fruit and an amazing complex nose. One of my fav CA cabs.

2005 Colgin Syrah (750ml) I saw this lone bottle on the counter with about 20 other bottles of wine and said “what the heck.” I knew Colgin was one of the CA cult cabs but did not realize they made a Syrah. Well, it blew my socks off. Quite unique but truly a heavy-hitter. I have no clue what a bottle of this costs but if have an opportunity, by all means try it.

This weekend I plan on roasting a pork shoulder (ham) with a rub and honey. The wine will probably be Sea Smoke or some low-rent, insignificant wine. πŸ˜‰

    Cheers!

  • hot dang!! Nice. I think I have to uncork my Dominus 91 soon πŸ™‚ I go to too few wineparties and tasting in this country. But I cannot complain when I’m on vacation. Next year might be a trip to Avignon and Chateuneuf du pape, staying two weeks. Will see if the plan goes well

Oh I’m going to the British Open in july. My girl bought me a trip and tickets and all. It might not be wine tasting but I’ve heard that the english have good beer πŸ˜€

  • 05, hmm thats a good vintage. depending on the estate it might be drinkable now.
I’m starting a step one wine course in january with MunskΓ€nkarna (Cupbearers) It’s a non-profit org, largets wine community in Europe I think 23 000 members. They have step 1-3 and then a bit of other stuff. That will be fun

  • Oh yes, their beer is pretty damn good. πŸ˜‰

That should be an amazing trip.

Is the British Open played at St. Andrews? I’ve been there but not for the golf. Castles, abbeys and beer were the main focus.

  • Hussy! πŸ˜‰

And a joyous and Merry Christmas to you!

  • At my recent holiday party, I was talking to the owners of a well-renowned DC wine shop http://www.cellar.com and I asked the obvious question as to what is the most exciting wine you’ve tried in the last few months and their answer: Eagle’s Trace cab from CA. http://cellar.com/inventory.aspx?ID=1535043

I’ve never heard about it, sorry but what do you Californians think about it?

Half price right now at his shop. Retails for 80 bones and I can get it for 40.

    Buy?

  • Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all the Vayniacs and especially to Mott. Hope life is treating you well my friend.

Go G-Men! My boys are playing themselves out of the Luck Sweepstakes.

    Cheers everyone!

  • Looks like WS scored it an 89 and should be ready.
