EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

  • Lisa S

    So where is Mott?

  • Anonymous

    Right here.

  • There’s my man. Congrats to you and your G-Men!

  • Yes, it should be a good one. Rain? That’s too bad if the elements play a role. Last week it looked absolutely gorgeous.

    I thought about moving. πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

Thanks everyone. That was a nice win yesterday.

  • Lisa S

It sure was! Wish I could say good luck next Sunday, but you understand. πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

    Hahaha! πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

I do. My wife is a die hard 49er’s fan. We might have to watch in separate rooms.

  • Anonymous

Congrats to all the 49’er Fans (Lisa S – My Son Ryan), Giant Fans (Mott), Raven Fans (I know Dom is a Colts Fan, but Ravens maybe?), and New England Fans (GV – LOL)! πŸ˜‰

I had one of those earth shattering wines this past weekend “2007 Andrew Will Champoux Vinyards” OUTSTANDING!

GV and Josh Greene from Wine and Spirits Mag taste and rate in Episode #927 which I totally forgot, but went back and watched again after having it this weekend. Simply amazing. Try it if you can find it. http://www.andrewwill.com

  • Lisa S

Thanks, Buddy. (Randall and Tennispro are also 49ers’ fans … so where are they??) Anyway, I’ve wanted to try Andrew Will for a while. I searched for the 07 champoux, but can’t find it. The 09 is available however,as well as some of the 2008s. They have a couple of other bordeaux blends that sound interesting and all have great reviews on cellartracker and wine spectator. Thanks for recommendation! Love the bordeaux blends as much as the pinots!

Here’s one for you: Insoglio (Tenuta di Biserno Insoglio 2009) an Italian red wine from Tuscany (32% Syrah, 31% Cabernet Franc, 32% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot). Recommended by the guy at my local wine shop $22. Just picked up another bottle at Costco for $19 and will buy more. Lovely wine.

  • Lisa S

Guys: Check out this video: http://youtu.be/5TiYDJpiH24
Thanks, Gary! What a treat! We miss you. And James Suckling is one cool dude! Who knew?

  • There he is. Welcome back, we missed you.

I have a bottle of the Andrew Will which I bought after GV’s #927 review. I will open it soon.

And yes, Colts/Ravens works for me. πŸ˜‰

  • Suckling says “Vannerchuk”? Please, pronounce his name correctly dude. πŸ™‚

Nice video. I saw it quite some time ago after GV linked it up during one of his shows.

  • It was a featured video on sucklings site as well for a period.
    http://www.jamessuckling.com/retail-tasting-k-l-wine-merchants.html here’s another

  • Hola Dan. I told you I have ordered it, probably getting it tomorrow. It will be a dinner wine in the near future.

  • Lisa S

So this has been out for a while?? I just saw it on Facebook yesterday and thought it was relatively new. Probably just a re-post by GV.

Yeah, J.Suckling, should learn how to pronounce GV’s name at least (otherwise he’s a cool dude).

  • Lisa S

Why am I the last to know these things? Thanks, Anders.

  • πŸ™‚ Here is the show GV actually mocks “Dude Man’s” pronunciation of his name.

    http://tv.winelibrary.com/2011/02/07/tasting-value-wines-from-around-the-world-episode-981/

    Go Niners!

  • Wow, just went to Dude Man’s site and wanted to do a search on the show with Gary and it hotlinks to a subscription page. For a cool 143.90(?) bones a year or 14.99 a month you can become a subscriber. Parker is 99 and 12 respectively. Spectator is only 50 bones for online and with their gorgeous magazine its 75. Interesting

  • even more cudos to Gary to pump his for free. But hey men want to make a buck. It seems to me that Suckling is doing a lot of video compared to the other sites so? But I don’t subscribe to any of them so what do I know.
Actually one could create a “Cellartracker” community with videos content instead, free for all to see and contribute.

  • Drinking Te Mata Syrah 2008. Hawke’s Bay NZ. Clean Syrah characteristics and almost Crozes-Hermitage quality. Lots of red cherry and cranberry with herbs, dirt and dry black olives in the mix. Nice acidity and long soft black pepper finish.

  • Anonymous

I personally don’t like Syrah, it just doesn’t fit my palate, but this sounds intriguing. I just love black olives and cranberries. πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa S

Just watched it.. good show, good wine! And Cool Dude pronounced the guy’s name right! K&L Hollywood store is much nicer than their store down the street from me.

  • Lisa S

Ouch!! I’m sticking with Spectator. Okay so Dude is not so cool. πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

How funny. Now I remember watching that video and thinking, “why is he pronouncing his name wrong?” Ha!

Yeah, go Niners!! Sorry Mott. πŸ™‚

  • Anonymous

Very Cool Dominus! I didn’t even know you did this. I do remember you talking about it and Lisa turned me on to it. Sorry I was late to the Partay! Thank You for the shout-out and remembering my service, the Navy was a great period of my life, so thanks and that was nice. Enjoyed the show and we are definitely going to have to get together one of these days over a beautiful bottle of wine. You are absolutely right, we are like family.

    Nostrovia!

  • Super Bowl for Mott’s team. Congrats again and Good Luck.

  • Condolences are sent across the continent to all the Niners fans, especially our girl Lisa. That was a crushing defeat. Been there, done that so I know how bad you are feeling right now. Losing by not one, but two bonehead mistakes by the same player is well, . . . enuff said. So sorry. πŸ™

At least Mott is smiling. πŸ™‚

  • I’m pretty much in the same boat with Zinfandel. Too hot for my palate though I have found a few that I actually like such as few Turley zins and my stellar pick, the Haywood Los Chamizal. Other than those two, I stay away from the Zin section of my wine shop.

  • Anonymous

That game was sooooo stressful. You just knew whoever made the first mistake was going to lose.

  • Anonymous

Yes, I am also sorry for our girl Lisa and Randall along with all the other 49er fans in their sorrow, but not my son because he is young and will get over it. A lot of bonehead mistakes in both games that could have switched the course of the games. πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous

Congrats MOTT!!!!!! As much as I dislike both teams that are in the Super Bowl. I dislike New England more! So MOTT, Good Luck! Beat those Patsies! I predict a Giants Victory 24-17! πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa S

Thanks so much, Dom. You’re swell. πŸ™‚ Yeah, was that brutal or what?? Bonehead mistakes! Ouch! The poor guy is getting death threats over the internet. Some 49ers fans need to get a grip for heaven’s sake. It was a bad day all around.. gloomy weather, lost the game, and I spent a couple of hrs with a very ill friend in the hospital. And, to top it off, I had a very ho-um bottle of wine. Sheeesh. Glad it’s over!

Mott!! Congrats!!! The Giants were great (and I can’t help but like Eli Manning). πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

So true, Dan. Thanks. You’re swell, too! Well, I guess we won’t see the Harbaugh brothers together at the Super Bowl: http://www.wtop.com/?nid=351&sid=2718153
“John of the Ravens and Jim of the 49ers were on the wrong end of fate, and a kickers leg.” πŸ™‚

  • Mott: ^^^^ Do your work on this one.

  • Last night the second lecture in the wine course I’m taking. This time Bourgogne, with all its climnat, clos and parcelles. The monks and farmers after the 1784 revolution, the grapes Chardonnay, AligotΓ©, Pinot noir and Gamay. Tasting 6 wines

White wines being the hard part for me. How to find the chablis even thou the other two had been oaked was impossible, since my palate picked up more butterschotch on the chablis then on the others (maybe I mixed up the glasses)
Gamay and Pinot was no poroblem, even thou the teacher really messsed things up before I got to correct the dude. Puh! I thought I had to quit this beacuse my palate is completely off, but no, πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

Ha! Loved it! You need to tell the dude to step aside and let you teach the class!!

Yeah, butterscotch doesn’t sound like Chablis. I must say that I’m not a fan of Chablis. Too much lemon/lime and acidity maybe?

  • Thanks Mott πŸ˜‰

  • @John_J — Have you been here? I’m going this Saturday evening and the owner (Stewart Dearie) used to be at the Antrim 1844 so thought you may know him.

    Hope all is well.

    Cheers!

  • So I took a Chateau De Reignac 2007 to the farmers omelet tonight. The Chateau have been a favorite of Robert Parker giving it 90 points for several years. Maybe it because of the sweet tooth that this wine exude. It is opaque, blackish purple/ruby. with a moderately open nose. Lot?s of ; ripe black berry and barrel. There is a sweet scent that don?t appeal to me and a heat and black pepper feel that make me look at the label for the alcohol. 13% and so much heat smell?. On the palate it is first very thick with lots of sweet cherry, plum and blackberry, over ripe fruit. Mid on there is heat, black pepper, velvet tannins and then more heat of the alcoholic type. So not that structured despite the reasonable 13% is my verdict. Back end transform to a watery feel of sugar water and sandy wooden grain. A little bitter. Medium long finish that says nothing in the end.

I have a bit of a cold but I don?t think that matter in this case. 89-91 p, really Parker, really? I give it 84-86 at the most

  • Lisa S

yeah, that sounds about right.. I usually knock off 5 pts from Parker’s score. I’ve had my run of 84-86 pt wines this week. I hate it when that happens. πŸ˜‰

  • I have always been a fan of Reignac and agree that after the 2000 vintage they are all over the place with regards to their profile and quality. I thought it may have been me but by your review, I’m not losing my mind.

    Good review. Thanks

    Cheers!

  • Got a Balthus 2005 in the cellar. Will have a go at that sometime next year I think

Presently drinking a 2007 Benziger Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County

Nice nose, Black currant, Blackberries, Prune, Vanilla, cigar box and a sweet savory strawberry aroma which was a bit strange for me coming from a Cab.

On the palate it is medium bodied with alcohol coming through, dark fruits (blackberries, currant, blueberries) spice notes, a bit of oak and the tannins are not over-baring. Not a long finish, but long enough to get the essence of all that it is about. Nice Price Point around the $16 to $18 bone range.
    http://www.benziger.com

I will have to rate this an 87+.

    Nostrovia! πŸ˜‰

  • Nice review NWID. It’s been ages since I’ve tried a Benziger and by this account, I should try some soon.

Tonight for quaffing, I’m going to have a 2010 Porcupine Ridge SB from South Africa which has a hint of petrol and aromas of honeysuckle but overall limited on the nose. Mouthfeel is nice, not too acidic at all for a SB vs NZ with flavors of melon. Not too complex. Good Friday night quaffer and a great price point coming in less than 10 bones. (The wine shop had a “Try This” sign so I did.)
    85+

On SB Sunday, I plan on preparing a Bolognese sauce with meatballs smothered over some fresh tagliatelle and crusty Italian bread and pairing it with a nice Dolcetto. Review to come.

    Go Giants!

Hope life is treating everyone well.

    TGIF

    Cheers!

  • @AndersN — Your turn for Episode 1002! πŸ™‚

  • I will, let me set up something during next week.

  • Saturday wines

Dinner at friends and I brought Chateau Nenin and Chateau Latour. Both of 1985 vintage

First out after 1Β½ hours airing Chareau Nenin, Pomerol. 60% Merlot 40% cab franc

Fourth time having this and yet again first wiff is wood then molten strawberries mixed with dirt. Actually the color is like homemade strawberry lemonade, the Swedish style πŸ™‚ Juniper wood and minerals in the background., almost juniper sap coming on strong at the sniffy sniff end.
First taste reveals a dry wine. There is cedar, juniper, oak and I even imagine pine wood at first. There is plum and strawberry as fruit to balance the wood and there is some spice there too. Mid palate carries a dry and slightly bitter taste., really rinse the tongue for you. Back end is smooth as Merlot, some red fruit and a little bit more of the spice, but just a little. Solid old world wine despite it?s age. 89 p

    then Chateau Latour, Paulliac

Much more deep blue red color. Rim still shows white. Opens with a subtle nose of caramel, red and blue fruit and oak. A bit of cigar box hovers there too. whirling it makes a more dominant scent of saddle leather and violets combined with red ripe fruit. Tasting is cautious but it delivers fresh acidity from redcurrant and raspberry mixed with dirt, toffee, herbs and white pepper that borders on hot. There is another layer beneath that is tobacco, hay and dry, dry milk chocolate powder. There is tannins left, but very small and the liquid is silky, very silky. Back end brings a bit of graphite and white pepper mixed with the fresh red fruit. What a nice structure if you like some acidity in red wines. 93 p

One can really feel a difference in pedigree between the two wines. But still I?m surprised that the Nenin is holding up at this age.

All of us was very happy with the dinner and the wines. On the way back home my car broke down, but who cares when one had to good wines and one was a Latour πŸ™‚

  • This ones for Mott Go G’s ! Live on Swedish telly at 23 pm πŸ™‚
