EP 1000 Episode 1,000

Gary Vaynerchuk has finally made it to episode 1,000 of Wine Library TV! It’s been an amazing ride since that day in February 2006, with great guests, amazing (and sometimes awful) wines, as well as a lot of Jets talk. Today, the main focus is a huge thank you to all the Vayniacs who helped make this community…and a huge announcement from Gary.

Wines tasted in this episode:

2008 Jerome Prevost La Closerie Les Beguines BrutFrench Brut Vintage

  • One can always mix social with wine, tech crunch with crushed grapes, fotnotes with sniff notes πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa S

Hey, that was my bottle! I wanted it! πŸ™‚ Lucky Dom.

  • Wednesdays pre test to the big test on April 18th to get the wine certificate level one.
Two white, two red. What white wine has more acid, what red wine has most tannins. Fairly easy if you take it slow and let the wine hit the plate really good.
Then a written test 15 questions, 10 have to be right. No sweat πŸ™‚

    The wines this time
Gustave Lorentz Gewurztraminer RΓ©serve 2010 Alsace

Big perfumy nose of litchi honey and apricot. A hint of flowers as well. Taste was semi dry on my tongue a light viscosity and obvious honey and pear flavor. Slight acid feel but not much. Beck end have some peach and litchi components. This one cannot be the most acidic wine.

Georg Breuer Riesling Sauvage 2011 Rheingau
This has lemon, lime and granite on the nose, Must be the acid wine they want us to pick out.. Fresh green apple and minerals initial taste followed by some streaks of lime and ending with more minerals , good acidity and more lime.. yep this has most acidity.

Torres Gran Sangre de Toro 2008 Catalunya

Spicy and fruity i nose, lots of plum and dark cherry. I detect hints of dark chocolate:) On the palate this have a coarse feel and a slight heat. Cherry, plum and blackberry followed by grainy tannins and then a mild vanilla and licorice back end. Still a heat that might be attributed to tannins, but I don?t think so.

    ChΓ’teau BouscassΓ© 2008 Madrigan

This smells like Bordeaux to me so a blend (Tannat, Cab S and Cab F it turns out) A bit closed but I detect blackberry, tobacco with some white pepper and a nice dry dirty character. In the mouth this is first lush with blackberry, mature black olives and some black currant. Mid on comes the dry sensation with dirt, tobacco and white pepper. Back end vanish in a cloud of white pepper and sand. Dry, small but oh so distinct tannins. This the most tannic if you just wait an second.. Did I say dry?

Happy Easter if you celebrate that folks.

Greetings and salutations from an all but dead Cellarrat; hope everyone is doing well out there on the vast landscape of the interwebs (and in real life as well). John, Lisa, and Ed sorry I missed the last meet up; Randal said it was amazing.

  • cellarrat5

Wish I could have been there, hopefully the next one will not be on a Sunday night!!

  • cellarrat5

Don’t tease us like that GV!! I have the worst case of internet blue balls since the culmination of the Bhuler debacle!

  • cellarrat5

I got into the wrong business; making wine is for suckers! I want to do whatever it is that allows you allotments of Scarecrow and cases of Caymus.

  • cellarrat5

St. Amant Marian’s Vineyard Old Vine Zin, Lodi, CA 250 cases produced. inoculation, pumpovers, pressing, racking and barreling preformed by yours truly.

Let me preface by telling you this was a strange initial fermentation, this wine was a combination of two lots of Marian’s Vineyard Zin; a 111 year old Vineyard on its own rootstock. The fruit from this crop was beautiful when it came in verasion was consistent, seeds were perfect ripeness, the pulp was firm and flavorful, a picturesque crop from an ancient piece of central valley history. But one of the lots would not go dry, no matter what we threw at it, Lot one still had an RS of about 1 when we finally barreled this cantankerous lot. That being said, the second lot behaved nicely and yielded an interesting 2010 vintage when blended with the problem child lot.

On the initial nose I get a slight hint of vanilla raspberry compote, with a healthy dose of all spice sweet American oak and perhaps a little cinnamon. I also get a little bit of stewed blackberry action as well, and unfortunately a little heat (it clocks in at about 15.9, but we may have taken a little liberty with that number). Yeah, its that big, but it has a svelte and sturdy body to match.

On the initial attack a cornucopia of berries roll over the tongue; leaving you feeling like you just got gently bombarded with a field of fruit. There is a very inviting spiciness and juiciness that comes into play after the initial attack, all spice clove and cinnamon come to mind. It is big people, similar to a female prize fighter who can turn around and wow you with her knowledge of Kant, Hume and Nitche, while simultaneously warranting stares due to her surprisingly svelte body shown off by her formal gown she pulls of much better than one would expect. The style is a little over the top for me (even though I helped make it) but for people who enjoy big bold bouncing Zin that takes no prisoners and would pair amazingly well with steak or lamb this one is for you!

  • Nice glimpse of the trade behind a bottle. Thank you.

  • Making oven baked chicken served with risotto and aspargus I thought I’ll take an Italian from the storage. Campogiovanni Brunello di Montalcino 2006 35 dollars bought last fall. Opened it and smelled some part of heaven , at least.

Color is inky. The scent boast of licorice, sweet spices, toast, smoke and those cherry that I associate with sangiovese grapes. Young approach but still very well layered. The oak comes across like the scent you get when you walk into a craftsmen store and sense the work behind the door to the work shop.

The mouth feel on this is dry and it feels very young. I think I have made crime to open this now. The flavors is very rich but yet integrate, tones of red cherry, spice, leather, a hint of black olive and chocolate. This wine is very structured, very structured. Tannins fine like sandy grain and they brush your mouth with angel dust πŸ™‚ This will hold 10 years easy. Luckily did I buy two bottles, so the remaining one will be forgotten for a couple of years

When checking if I could buy more I see that its sold out in Sweden and 2007 is the vintage of this wine now. I also find out that this wine is no 4 out of the 100 best in 2011 according to WineSpectator http://www.winespectator.com/display/show?id=45909
I can se why and now I count my self really lucky.

  • cellarrat5

You are more than welcome! It is good to be back, hope to stay active πŸ˜‰

  • cellarrat5

P.S. didnt sound like our Temp heald up very well. I tried an 04 the other night, it was good but not nearly as much tannin or grit as I expected. I think that is what people were hopeing for? Glad everyone had a good time!

  • Lisa S

You ARE lucky! Sounds wonderful. I will look for the 07! Thx Anders. I need to drink more Italian wines.

  • Lisa S

Glad to see you’re back, Cellarrat. We missed you, but there will be future get-togethers I’m sure.

  • Lisa S

I thought it was great, and so did JF. Pretty sure that Ed liked it, too. Not sure why Randall was disappointed with it.

Your zinfandels are wonderful and I need to buy more. πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

You’re right.. however, the 2006 is listed as pre-arrival in most stores listed in wine searcher, but it is available at one store for $89. Hmm.. I will add my name to waiting list. Thanks!

  • tennispro

  • tennispro

Glad to see Cellarrat5 is bringing it πŸ˜‰

C5 …. lets meet up in the city with Lisa S for some wine and cheer ???? Dominus can u make it out over the summer ????

I’ll bring some hundred acre or scarecrow if you boys and girls can pony up a good bottle to share. πŸ˜‰

P.S. all the TTF peeps are welcomed to party. Who’s in ????

  • cellarrat5

I am most definitely in (weekend would be better if possible)!! Just tell me when and where, I think I can scrape up enough cash to splurge on something ;~)

  • cellarrat5

It?s good to be back! I hope I can make the next rendezvous!

  • cellarrat5

I think Randal thought it was going to be a tannic monster still, which they ushually are not when they have 5 + years on them. Glad to hear soomeone liked it and that it still was holding up for the most part!

  • cellarrat5

    YYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!

    HHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(a little old school Wayno for old time sake)

  • Hmmm sounds quite inviting and you are seducing us with a bottle of Hundred Acre. Wowwww

I think I may have a bottle of Staglin Family, Dunn or Diamond Creek that may suffice entry into the Vayniac Party.

  • I will share. πŸ˜‰

  • I remember that episode as though it were yesterday. The epitome of “Born With a Silver Spoon.”

  • cellarrat5

The controversy that followed was worthy of Watergate! Although that seemed to divide our once thriving community, the fallout was some of my favorite “banter” in my short history on the forum!

  • So C5 has a Zin that is not too hot? Where can I get my hands on some of your wines and give an “unbiased” review?

To be honest, my “go-to” Zins are Haywood and some Ridges.

  • I needed to jump on and tell my Vayniacs about the wine I am quaffing tonight awaiting my roasted chicken with mushroom risotto.

I walked downstairs and did an eeney-meeny-miney-mo (is that right?) and came up with this one. Absolutely delicious right now. I’m getting goosebumps.

If you can find it, buy it. If you don’t like, well, you have yet to expand your palate and I’ll send you a bottle of Beringer White Zinfandel. πŸ˜‰

    Cheers to Patty Green!

  • I will concur that opinion. It was “epic” as GV would say.

If you notice in the comments, I stayed a tad “neutral” but in reality, one would venture a guess as to where I stood. Beauty is nice, i.e. Bar Rafaeli but please, intelligence is my greatest aphrodisiac along with an appreciation of fine wine and food.

    Cheers!

P.S. An appreciation for world history, art and world travel enhance the experience whilst sipping a Prosecco on the Rialto Bridge. πŸ˜‰

  • cellarrat5

I suppose it would depend on your definition of “not too hot”. I am used to Lodi Zin, which for many people is too hot across the board (and some are really hot, as in Marilyn Monroe hot in “some like it hot”). Our Mohr-Fry Zin is very approachable, and would be available at Total Wine and More. Our distribution is not that wide spread (we make around 5000 cases a year), but I would be happy to send you a bottle or two if you wish (depending on if it is legal to ship to your state). If your curious Google us, St. Amant Winery.

  • cellarrat5

Yes, it is all coming back to me. If I recall, you did stay relatively less enthusiastic regarding bashing her, and anyone that jumped to her defense (unlike me, and most others on the forum). I am certain at one point or another I heard the crescendo of the 1812 overture playing in the background while leaving some of my more colorful posts on that day.

  • cellarrat5

Sounds delicious! I have a confession to make, I have never ordered wine off the internet *a collective gasp is heard from all remaining Vayniacs on the forum*. I really don?t know why I have resisted; I suppose I am old fashion in a way.

  • cellarrat5

One of my first “real wines” was a 97 Cakebread. That was the day I fell in love with Napa Cab, almost as expensive as a real relationship!

  • I also try to frequent the local wine shops close to home but since I live in Maryland with medieval, antiquated liquor laws, trust me, I have no choice but to order wine online else I would only be drinking Sutter Home and Yellow Tail. Yikes!

Thankfully, I work in DC where I have my wine shipped and then tote it home on the Metro or drive into work if I have ordered a case or more.

  • Lisa S

Hahaha! The dreaded white zin! Too funny, Dom. I need to find this pinot noir, or at least another vintage. Patricia Green also does a special cuvee for K&L (I’ve not tried it yet). I love pinot noir with roasted chicken.. and perfect pairing with mushrooms. Mmmmm.

  • Lisa S

You’ve got to be kidding? Not even from Wine Library???? πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa S

I’ve not had a Cakebread cab since the late 90s, but have heard good things lately. Thanks for posting! πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

Umm… I have an 01 Dominus from last year that I’m willing to share. πŸ˜‰ I’m in. Let’s do it!

  • walked downstairs! Just that is a nice piece of words.
Could you send the white zin anyway, I have to expand my palate and never had one…
Wait I can actually buy on in town Barefoot and Lord Zinclair both less than 10 bones. Should I?

  • Lisa S

No. Your palate may never recover from it. Why take a chance? πŸ™‚

  • cellarrat5

Not kidding, and no, not even from WL. I’m broke, keep in mind I have only had a “professional career” for about 4 years now!

  • NWIndianaDan

Lisa, I hope you had a great birthday! You have to tell what you did and what wine you drank on the 10th, your day! I told you last night I was going to open a Pinot Noir in your honor and the one I opened was, “2009 Capiaux” Russian River Valley from the Widdoes Vineyard. OUTSTANDING! πŸ˜‰ I will jump back on later today and update everyone on this wine. Most of all, Happy Belated Birthday Lisa S! You are the Best!

    Nostrovia!

  • Lisa S

Thank you, Dan! I appreciate the good wishes and am truly humbled that you would have a pinot noir in my honor! Looking forward to hearing about the Capiaux! What an interesting name for a vineyard (Widdoes)? So I had dinner with a friend – a very low-key birthday, and only a glass of Davis Bynum Russian River chardonnay, which was very good. It went well with the halibut. Next year will be my big milestone b-day. I will need lots and lots of medication (sedation), or wine, to help me get through it! Thanks again, my friend.

  • Ahhhh birthday girl! Happy Birthday my dear. I’ve had so many “Milestone Birthdays” that I lost count. I’m sure it will be a festive affair but you have alot of time to choose a venue and the wines.

    Happy Birthday!

  • Agreed πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa S

Thank you, Dom. Vegas, Paris, or NY? Hmmm.

  • Lisa S

I just happened to see the 2010 bottle of this (Patty Green -Ribbon Ridge Estate pinot noir) this weekend and couldn’t pass it up. I guess I’ll need to lay it down for a few years!

Oh, by the way, I finally got the 2009 Sawbuck Cab you recommended a couple of months ago. You were right, Dom. Probably the best cab around for under 10 bucks! Cheers!

Keep the recommendations coming, buddy. You’re on a roll. πŸ™‚

  • Springtime in Sweden? Snow or green grass depends on weather and location. River rafting, elk safari, arts and crafts, a stroll in a 700 years old city, see a ship from 1628, see reindeers
    Wines on me πŸ™‚

But Paris in spring sound nice too πŸ™‚

  • Lisa S

What a lovely idea! Reindeers too? And I know you have good wine! OK, Sweden and Paris are now at the top of my list of places to celebrate big birthday next April! Thanks Anders.
