EP 488 Austrian Red Wine Tasting – A Battle Of 2 Unknowns

Gary Vaynerchuk dives head 1st into 2 wines that would not be at the top of everyones wine vocabulary, the Kartauserhof estate was originally built in 1380 as the wine estate of the Carthusian Monastery in Aggsbach, hence the name and then he St. Laurent grape is on display and this should be a very interesting episode to say the least!

Wines tasted in this episode:

2004 Johanneshof Reinisch St LaurentAustrian St Laurent
2005 Kartauserhof DecimoAustrian Red Meritage

Açaí berry? Really? I remember having that once, probably about 6 years ago. It was pretty disgusting.

We did an Austrian tasting with our monthly tasting group just this week! I wasn’t blown away by any of the wines, the Zweigelt we had was pretty harshly bitter on the finish. We had a 70% Zweigelt and 30% Blaufränkisch blend that I liked more. The two Gruners were pretty boring. We had a TBA Pinot Blanc that brought some thunder though.

We’ve got them all listed out on wine dot scribblewiki dot com.

QOTD: I would want to hear from the Vayniacs: What is your favorite way to cook a hamburger?

I made an awesome burger recently with 50% Bison, 50% Chuck, minced shallot, olive oil, salt, and pepper.

  • Gary, I would love to know what wine goes great with chicken nuggets (Perdue, baked not fried) and Kraft macaroni and cheese. These are my go to, quick dinners for when my husband is working and its just me and the rugrats. Those nights that you need a glass of wine! There have to be some parents out there who have found the perfect match…

I have not had many – perhaps just one or two red Austrian wines. I will need to try more of them.

I had one austrian red at Lavomatic wine bar in cincinnati, don’t remember what it was, but enjoyed the hell out of it. Thought I’d see more comments on today’s show. Thanks for wearing it on your sleeve today, Gary.
MY qotd…tough one…..Who out there stocks their cellar with wines that you know your friends, significant others, etc. rather than all your own?

My advice of the day. Invite people over, cook for them and pop those wines. That is what I like to do.

Hey Gary, although I am proud that you are featuring Austrian wines – please stop it!! Otherwise everybody wants to buy them and prices will rocket! The St. laurent you tasted in this episode is just the basic one of Johanneshof Reinisch. I live across this winery and my cellar is full of its Reserves. If you have a chance to get it – try the 1992 Pinot Noir Reserve! if you can't get it come and vistit me. Cheers from Austria
