GARY!!! You’ve gotta stop getting so pi**ed when the wines don’t deliver! It happens from time to time, stop apologising for it!

  • Phil G

Well, that was a downer. Missed the show last week but will try to catch one soon!

Hey Gary, though I would prefer Francesa, you should ask Mad Dog to come on the show to talk about Football, the Jets, and wine…

    QOtD: Because.

  • tout le merde…
VDP really can be a spin the bottle experiment if its right off the shelf with no Beta or previous knowledge. Still it can be a fun experiment now and again.
I know a distributor that deals specifically with VDPs and she finds some really sweet deals…but I trust her palate and quality expectations, so I’m not afraid to try stuff with her label.

Pepper hittin’ my palate this evening.. 1999 “Les Eygats” Cornas from Domaine Courbis (Yes, serious producer) Thank you RhonΓͺ Valley for being soo great….

Salty pepper for days, dark fruits galore, rich with a great mouthfeel, tannic, still quite young…….. But ultimately delicious. 95p, and a winner in my little red book.

My go to monday wine! (Only kidding)

    Cheers! πŸ˜›

Shit happens! You need the lows to really appreciate the highs. We should thank these producers for filling out the other end of the scoring scale.

Didn’t catch the show unfortunately πŸ™

Discus still messed up for me , on several diff. computers… just sayin.

Sad catastrophe. There are so many hundreds, literally, of names, big and small, respected, and unknown, who are in this game, and their modest efforts are frequently and regularly found to be above the acceptable threshold of what is offered. There’s a top 100 competition annually, for VdP, and results are posted on sites all over.
In this crowded field, a small concession may be asked on the part of an intelligent consumer. I’d generally ask the wine to be ‘as cheap’ as possible, but, I may NOT ask, or expect it to be anything more than adequate, although, many ARE capable of scalingthat bar. When I’d discovered one, I’d supported it, and shared it until it otherwise showed itself unworthy. Though this is not remotely a world of wine that I am personally interested in consuming or ‘saving money on’, anymore than I am interested in putting a spoonful of Spam in my mouth, there has been the actual use, place, and function for such wines at the right cost. Cooking/brasing/deglazing. Spritzer/punch/coctail. And even the rare moment, for a v. light, inconsequential wine, to enjoy a quiet, solitary thought, and centering oneself, whether, post-haste stress, or quiet grace for a blessing of relief. I personally suspect that in the arbitrary area of up to 2/3 of these wines are better tasting than American bulk remainder/remarketed products such as, and not limited to brands like ‘Two-Buck Chuck’. No ill-will, or offense to Mr. Franzia and his many enterprising industrial sized colleagues, I have been a big advocate of so many of the fine things he’s brought, bought, and sold over the years- they could not be quantified. I have an intuitive feeling that, though many of French VdP wines are industrially farmed, and bulk made, blended, or otherwise processed, I ‘feel’ a level of quality intact in some of their final blending that is somehow more ‘wine’ still, than ‘commodity’, ‘product’, or ‘slop’, if you will… Again – kinda intuitive, but w/ extensive experience behind it. And as w/ all vagueish generalizations, your results should, and will vary.

I’ve been digging a cheap VdP lately.

Dom des Terres Falmet Cinsault 2007 Vin de Pays d?Oc

Not earth shattering or anything, but really enjoyable, especially for the price.

Didn’t hear you on Sirius. “I don’t pay for radio.”

    QOTD:

Sucks that these were such a bad representation of a really cool wine category.

  • David M Roberts

Just goes to show you that the French make some supremely good wines, but, like any other region, they are quite capable of churning out lamp oil.

Ah. Well. Crap shoots can be like that, at times. :/

    Rough episode!

  • Ahhhh mannnnn, I was hoping to see a nice value play here. At the beach with friends right now, woke up early before everyone else to watch the last two shows. One was bad wine and the other was short and sweet.

Review of your sirius show though I only listened to the first half (wine) and a few mins of the tech talk.
    1) Late getting out the phone number and took forever to get through and when I did, you were talking about tech stuff so maybe this week. Same phone no.?
    2) Missed Mott, your sidekick is mehhhh
    3) ALOT of breaks which I think broke up your flow which seemed hurried but you gave good info in the time you had.
    4) Fun, fun

QOTD: The Colts will win the Super Bowl and yes, Beevis will sign before the season begins.

  • Did you ever get on sirius last Thursday? Mac or PC? I had trouble on Mac but PC handles sirius well.

  • I vote for bringing on someone like Ted Leonsis who knows alot about sports and a ton about wine. A nice guy and wine aficionado and maybe Jeff Gordon who is a huge Bordeaux collector.

  • NY Pete

    PC Dom
last thursday was a shutout on my end
so far when I try nightly, it’s still a no go
need to allow time to trouble shoot because sirius is no help … insert doucheroll here

I think the idea of brown paperbags is very good. I am new to the wineworld, comming from the audiophiles (guys that get crazy with hifi like you with wine). And because of that experience I know how easily you can trick youreself through autosuggestion. The paperbag is a good method to avoid this for winetasting. It is also very interesting having same sort of wine on a show. What I miss, is the low end price segment. And if there are cheap wines on your show, they are often crap. There are good wines in the range of 5? (Erben Dornfelder Barrique 2009, Hessische Staatsweinkellerei Eberbach Riesling trocken 2009). I have not that much experience with wines, so you might find this wines crap. I think drinking wine is about fun, I like to see a show, you show me (us) good made cheap wines that are fun to drink (and with no headakes after some glases). Thank you very much, I enjoy watching your show you doing a great job!RegradsFlecko
