lines of the day – ‘This is the worst blind tasting show ever’ and ‘All of these wines should be on your ‘do not drink’ list’

I love the shows where GV pans the wines and he sure as hell lays into these

No thnx man! Mollydooker is only being made because of the American market. That’s it.

It’s easier to buy a bottle of cheep Vodka and the pour some cranberrys into the mix!

“Apostrophe” now? Or is my long ago r & r memory failing me?

p.s. NOBODY will understand this post after you change it back to your “flambe” kitchen experience…

I think this debate has been run into the ground on this forum, but what the hell. In my personal opinion people are too hard on this producer. I understand the essence of call it as you see it, but I think people let gary influence them a little too much regarding Molly Dooker and Australian wine in general. There has been SOOOO much Auzzie wine bashing in general it is hard to actually take anyone seriously due to the fact that as soon as decent Australian wines show up everyone sings their praises (especially when Gary likes them). I do agree that Molly Dooker is over the top much of the time, but people do like it (and not just in the US) otherwise they would not make so much of it (or import so much of it anyway).

Why would he pull wine he felt to be bad? Others may enjoy them, and it seems from watching this show that he has a very eclectic and often abnormal pallet. His pallet is basically a citizen of france, and many Americans would probably enjoy what he despised (not necessarily me, I’m just saying there are lots of terrible wines out there that sell really well.)

here we go again, see comment regarding one of the Vayniacs QOTD’s.

Started clapping when you tripple poured them, sometimes you have to do it! Have not tried many VDP’s I heard they can be really good, too bad these did not show as well as you had hoped.

SQOTD: Sorry, wanted to listen but could not.

QOTD: ?????????????????????? I know the show was bad but come on, I was waiting for the silver lining but never got one!

Great great SB hittin’ my pal this evenin’…… . . . . . . 2008 Cono Sur 20 Barrels Sauvignon Blanc,,,,, extreme grassy, flavours exploding and lingering on & on & on……… the first 94+p SB i’ve ever had. YEEEHAAAWWW!! 😛

    Cheers!

  • BikeMike

Man, that suck, but that’s the way it is sometimes! So the appropriate response is — mustard, pickles (or a pickle relish) and sour kraut. No dog better than that! Oh ya, you eat with a glass of 2000 Chateau Pontet-Canet!! Yum.

    Yo!
Yep listened in on Thursday and I’m pretty excited about the show! It gives me something cool to listen to while working late. I definitely liked the Web part of the show more than the Wine part, but I think that’s just because the Wine conversation was way out of my league, but that’s cool… I’m learning.

The music was bad ass and Shout out to Geo Double G! He was pretty damn funny the entire show too.

  • Allan

    Wrong glass, wrong expectations?? ?

  • jalapenonate

Epic fail on the VDPs! Sad too because I’ve definitely had quite a few from the languedoc that have been exceptional values.

QOTD: Definitely watched and enjoyed it quite a bit. Loved both segments and really glad that people asked David some serious questions. The one about the economy really was fantastic because I personally have been wondering how a lot of premium-only producers like opus one have been impacted. I’m going to have to sign up for sirius now once the trial ends so I can keep tuning in

  • 1st QOTD: didn’t listen your XM/Sirius show.

    QOTD: …

Hey, there are times when you just have to say, “whatever”…

I do recognize and respect that everyone’s palate is different, but if I’m a merchant I want to stand behind the products I sell- if I can’t personally support it I wouldn’t pass it along to my customers. That being said, if I own a wine shop, am I going to sell white zinfandel and Santa Margherita pinot grigio even if I rate the former 65 points and think the latter is overpriced? Of course, because they’re established brands and moneymakers. But something like the wines reviewed here which are more under the radar, I’d want them to be solid before saying ‘this is the product we want to represent’

  • Anonymous

I agree with you about a merchant or larger wine sales establishment standing behind their product. Perhaps these ones were so bad he did pull them. But I am not sure what inventory he has or if he tried it before he orders it. If he sold only wines that he liked, regardless of brand or money making potential, I believe he would not do as well as he has done.

  • I have had some decent VDP, but this was a truly poor performance.

QOTD1: Will hopefully catch the repeat later tonight.
QOTD2: Even the couch couldn’t help these 3, I guess.

  • philoxera

No Shipping this side of the pond….No Radio either yea Bozo

  • Anonymous

Really a shame about those VDP’s. I’ve had some truly spectacular ones. Hope you’ll try this again soon…

  • QOTD; No
    QOTD2; Wash, rinse, repeat.

  • Simon Jerrome

Gary, QOTD for you: Do you sell all the wines that you taste in your store and if so what happens when you give them the sort of comments you gave to these VdP wines, do you take them off sale or hope that someone who hasn’t seen the show comes in and buys them?

  • Simon Jerrome

Sorry, just read ONUMello’s comments earlier after I posted.

  • Simon Jerrome

Terrible English, should have said earlier comments!

Thursday’s 1st hour flew by, awesome segment!!! 2nd hour could use some polishing. my wife actually fell asleep during the 2nd hour. kinda lost my attention too. just saying. great show overall though.

  • SuperPittedAndrew

Gary! I need your help! Breakfast is by far the most important meal of the day and my personal favourite. I was wondering if you had any wine pairing ideas for some breakfast staples. Scrambled eggs? Pancakes? And yes, I often drink wine with breakfast. I have seen the cereal episode and loved it. But I’m dieing to go down on some pancakes with some vino on the side.

Strange about VDP being this show because VDP is all I have been drinking the past week, and I never do. Found a “treasure chest” of 2003 Chateau Des Tourettes Trilogie d’Endes Vin De Pays Vaucluse, close to the Rhone Valley but too much time on it’s lees this wine is servicable at its $19 retail. At its $5 closeout, I feel like bankrobber.

Even BETTER, I found a 2003 Cote Du Ventoux Domaine Le Murmurmium Carpe Diem 50/50 Syrah Grenache blend that drinks like a $40 CDP for $5 also! Cotes Du Ventoux is just outside CDP to the east and I am very interested in this region now.

@GV….. didn’t hear your show last night…. why did you pick such a risky region for your follow up show to your debut? Are you an action junky?

I’ve had Dom. de la Ferrandiere’s Marselan a couple vintages back, as it was the only Marselan I could find (That cross between cab sauv and grenache). I remember tasting blue fruits, pine, and something I wouldn’t buy again from their winery.

QOTD: I listened to the 1st hour. Was not really interested int he first 30min. Maybe that will change with time as people stop calling in just to congratulate you. Second 30min was a lot better with the interview as the content was more wine related.

  • yea the 1st 30 minutes will no longer be the same kind of factor after the 1st month and i will screen and try to keep that part tight!

  • Bubbles!

  • Action junky

  • I so get it, the 2nd hour was later 😉 and nerdier, I get it

  • Thnx JustinM 🙂

  • no way!

  • Thnx for tunning in 🙂 really!

  • AHHAHAHAHAHHAHAH nice play Allan!

Wow. Wow. Now THAT was a show. I am surprised that the VDPs were so bad since I, too, have had a number of them over the years that have been very interesting. But, to me., this is the danger with any “value” wines. You cannot generalize and say this region or this type of value wine is always (or even usually) good. Just doesn’t work. Of course, you cannot rely on price as a barometer for quality in wine in general either, as you often have pointed out.

QOTD: I only listened to the first hour for various reasons. I thought the beginning was a bit off because of all the “Congratulations, Gary!!!!” calls. I thought the interview segment was actually quite good. I’m looking forward to next week’s show.
