lines of the day – ‘This is the worst blind tasting show ever’ and ‘All of these wines should be on your ‘do not drink’ list’

I love the shows where GV pans the wines and he sure as hell lays into these

  • waynooo daaa wino

    meeee threeeeee !!!! :o)

  • I’m calling in a 5150 on you nutty-nuts. And yet, that’s why I love you all.

    😛

  • Hey Gary

That show was awesome – you did what you’re meant to do. You honestly evaluated three winds tasted blind; it was perfect. If the wines sucks, who cares, it’s not your fault; like you say “I don’t make them”!

    Cheers
    Andrew

VdPs are really hit-or-miss affairs. Just real bad luck that things didn’t work out so well this episode.

My most recent VdP experience was Gerard Bertrand (sp?) 6eme Sens 2008. Served this on the economy class of Korean Airline, I was expecting absolute swill and I was prepared to relinquish the glass after a sip if I found it too crappy to swallow. It turned out to be okay. Not exciting by any stretch of the imagination, but I did manage to drink the whole glass.

unfortunately i didn´t, it´s too late here in Brazil. midnight til 2 am.
i never had a really good VDP, just average at most.

  • scottEJ

I remember a blind Zin tasting that was nearly as bad as this one…and that one had about 5 wines. Keeping it real is the name of the game, right?

QOTD: Sorry, I missed the show. I’m one more wine blog, list, e-mail, club, deal, etc. from being overly saturated like a bad cork. Do what you gotta do and I’ll do what I can to stay connected.

  • jrouss

Didn’t listen to the show, the only reason for me to get sirius is for wine library not for any other reason.

  • QOTD: that’s for being honest and keeping it real. even Ty Cobb struck out sometimes. have a great weekend.

  • wow devastating, he has never had to pour out all 3 wines at the same time. but hey, interesting show!

  • QOTD: I don’t know, man. Maybe you should just do a show on Mead.

  • Lucyfuer

  • L’egance

The triple wine pour! I’ve been wondering when this day would come. Sad that none of these wines bring the thunder.

You already know that I am absolutely ecstatic about Wine & Web. I will be tying up the phone lines every week ;D

  • L’egance

You’ll have to pull an all-nighter some time.

My friend and I had this discussion earlier. I’ve never been a big fan of stern, my friend went on and on about what he has done for modern radio. However, we somehow got on the subject of greatest video game systems and he badmouthed super nintendo then I just hung up.

  • L’egance of Looavull

Don’t feel bad winecrazy! I called for a good half hour and finally got through, waited for at least 10 minutes and then got hung up on. Called back finally got through again then put on hold for another 10…It’s a miracle I got to talk to GaryV.

Yeah it looks like everyone did except me….lol

  • L’egance of Looavull

    I’m so sorry! *hugs*

Agreed on the beer comment! Why not have a bottle of Anchor Liberty Ale or smth on the table just in case you’re left with a bad taste in your mouth after the wines

I think all of the new Vayniacs should check out the following two clip reels:

…THAT’S what this show is all about.

There are so many Great VDP;’s

  • Thats the way it is. Next time you go with the German VDP wines from the “Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter”.

Tough show, Gary. Luckily I know what The Thundershow is all about and I would like to encourage anyone who has just seen this show for the first time to continue watching because this show was a FLUKE!

    Chin up GV

  • Alex

Sassicaia is also a VDP (IGT in Italian)

I honestly loved this brief, brutally honest brown bag show. You called them like you saw (smelled and tasted) them, and these were the exception to the general rule of Languedoc wines bringing value. I have NOT lost faith in the VDP wine segment, and this showing shouldn’t deter anyone else from trying some VDP wines… although it seems that the other AOC in Southern France may be a better bet when dropping more than 10 bones on an unfamiliar wine in the store.

  • I’ll take that, being payed to drink wine. Can I use this video as a reference

QOTD: mmm OK I get that, but are you really sure that’s the right path to stroll down in this day an age? 😉

  • one could guess that that actually primes the glass with the new wine scent whereas water would be left in the glass and dilute the next wine and inflict on its scent.

  • Anonymous

    Thanks… 🙂

  • qoth- I have been a sirius. cust. of 5 years for some reason I could not get online from my computer. I will be there next week!
I love the brown bag shows!

Two disappointing brown bag episodes in a row; maybe the guest shows aren’t such a bad idea after all! I have had some really good VDP’s; just the luck of the draw for this episode.

No worries about the WLTV show. As always learned something and enjoyed your reactions.
I listened to bits and pieces of the radio show. A few issues – I guess I’m spoiled with podcasts, DVR, etc. Its just really tough to plan around (just) listening to something (even you) for a set period. Second, the parts I caught seemed to be more of the Sirius mold, rather than the GaryVee mold. Maybe its just the call-in format. Also a lot of WLTV is visual (the spontaneous wandering down the hall, etc). Figure out to make it GaryVee radio and it will be great. Also maybe bring more of the WL staff in. It would be great to hear KMurph, Mott, Ian, etc.

What a bad way to end the week. I am sorry that I missed the premier show on Thursday evening. I was out with friends and could not make it. I hope to listen next week. Congratulations on your latest venture!

So here’s my question for you, Gary: What do you do when you run across wines this bad after you’ve taped the episode? Obviously at this point all three wines are for sale at the store. Do you pull them off the shelf and return them? You should! I would also be curious who originally convinced WL to carry them, because I would think someone else would taste them first and recognize that they’re that bad (unless palates truly are THAT different!)

QOTD: No I did not listen in because I won’t pay for radio, ever. It has been free dating back to the 1920s and in my opinion that shouldn’t change just because we crossed into a new century and someone launched a satellite.

  • plcb

My Sirius is in my car and I was not in the car at 10pm. Sorry. Maybe there will be replays at other times???!

The 2009 Mollydooker wines arrived in my store Friday. What do the Vayniacs think about Mollydooker wines? That is my question of the day.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: No I did not. It was my grandpas 87th birthday so I didn’t find any time.

  • Westcoastluv

I’m so happy to see that I have a bottle of the V. Bouquet Cab. that I ordered cause it was on your staff picks list. I have the same questions as ONUMello, who tastes these wines when you buy them? I hate to say it but I ordered 9 bottles of various wine from your staff picks list and about half of them sucked. I just ordered 8 bottles from your pick list and I hope they are better. I really like your show, just not too impressed with what I’ve sampled so far. Best of luck with Sirius XM.

  • For the most part I think they’re overdone. Having said that, I don’t mind the Enchanted Path too much, and I had an 05 Carnival of Love this year which was showing fairly well but I think my palate might have been off that night.

  • QOTD: I had signed up for Sirius in the morning and planned to listen in after having a bottle of wine with a friend. But more people showed up and one bottle multiplied into 5 and I never made it home in time.

  • castello

On top of paying for it Garys show has commercials. UGH!

  • Allan

This was the best worst show evah!!!!! 😛

    TOO FUNNY!!! Great entertainment!

    Qotd: I did not listen.

Cheers and have a great weekend all

  • Randall

I agree, Allan. Whenever anybody steps up and blind tastes, it doesn’t really Matter what the results are. It’s always nice to find some gems, but proving one’s mettle and sticking to your opinions no matter what is ballsy!

    C’mon… all 3 poured out at once? HI-larious! 🙂

  • Randall

    Good call, jeffsjeff! No… GREAT call… 🙂

  • EpargRevol

great tasting! I have had some very good vin de pays – Mas de Guiot and Mas de Bressades (which is made in costiere de nimes which is its own AOC). I think they were in $10 to $12 range a few years ago.

I listened to XM 139 in my car on the battery to the first hour of the show on Thursday. The commercial breaks were very long. I enjoyed the first hour but that was about my limit. I had a couple of awful bottles of Opus One 1989 which were over the hill by the mid 1990s and that kind of turned me off to it.

I love the Boxer for all out Shiraz and Two left Feet has been a great cab/shiraz blend. The more expensive wines are very good too but overpriced in my opinion and I don’t buy them anymore. GV and many others don’t like their style because they tend to be over-the-top, but that’s how I like by aussie wines

  • MTmax

a show on taurasi would never be that bad…

  • Allan

Thnx man! Have a great weekend!!

    😛

  • A dumb Rhein king

    QOTD1: Sorry did not listen.
