January 8, 2007

episode161

Wines tasted in this episode:

Petite Sirah is it the same as Syrah? Is Petite Sirah bigger or smaller then Syrah? Is Petite Sirah the same as Durif? All these questions and more will be answered by a sad Gary Vaynerchuk.

My palate must be off tonight, as what I got from the Concannon was something along:

“What this wine is giving me is big jammyness up front, followed by a grape jam mid pallet, as well as grapiness and jammyness.”

I didn’t find even $10 worth of complexity. Then again, I’ll admit, my palate might be off tonight. That would be due to a root canal this morning that I’m still whining about. I’ll wait until the next time to submit a serious review at Corkd.com.

Just tried the Concannon and came back to see how Gary’s assessment matched my own. I actually disagreed slightly on the balance. The wine I had (decanted 2h) still presented a bit of an alcoholic finish, but not offensively so. I think Gary gave the Concannon a bonus point for surprising him. I score the Concannon 88 points, still a great value at the price point.

    Let’s move on.

Gary, dude, I am SO SORRY about your Jets. All I can say is that I feel your pain. I am a Browns fan. We have NEVER been to a freakin’ Superbowl! I had to suffer in person through “The Drive” and “The Fumble” and see that jackass John Elway go to Superbowls and lose!!!! AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! Then there’s my Indians… Damn Marlins in 1997 - we HAD that one - Damn Marlins!!!!

The pain is real. Anyway, I know you are in mourning, so I admire you even more than ever for doing a show. And if you weren’t “acting”, and I don’t think you were, that was inspiring.

QOD: Oddly, I like to drink a fantastic and expensive bottle of wine when I am very sad. Soon after my dad passed away in 1999, I single-handedly polished off a 1986 Mouton Rothschild. Hang in there!

That wasn’t a wine tasting; that was a funeral.

I don’t drink wine when I’m sad. It’s not appropriate. It’s time for vodka bay-bee! —> Boru (Irish), Vox (Dutch), or Belvedere (Polish): tall glass, ice, 7-up; 2 parts vodka, 1 part 7. Repeat until no longer sad. . .

I know this is a couple of days late, but maybe you’ll find it useful some other time.

QOD: Here’s something a little different to consider: it might not be a good idea to drink anything you plan on enjoying deeply in the future. On some level, you will associate the wine with your sadness, and each wine is a unique enough stimulus that drinking it again will bring back some degree of the state you were in when you drank it before. Curse Pavlov and Skinner for complicating the decision-making process!

Cheer up, bro! The Jets earned themselves a helluva lotta respect this year. I know I’m certainly more aware of them than ever before.

Gary! Gary! Gary! Wow! Nice bit! Even with your intended subduedness, you still can make me laugh! It would also been great if you had 4 hard liquor bottles laid out for tasting.
For me, Concannon’s PS is always on hand. A nice go to.
As usual, a little late CONGRATS GAR on seeing you in WS Mag.

Wait’ll next year! (Oh, sorry for stealing that from the Cubbies). I really like Petite Sirah. I picked up a few Concannon bottlings from the 2000 vintage last year and recently popped one. It was terrific with great rich berry flavors and good tannins. I’m going to wait a couple of more years to pop the next one. Yummy wine. All the best, Jim

Wow, that was depressing - almost makes me want to root for the Jets!

QOTD: Usually a quality champagne. After that if I’m still sad a good single malt scotch. Gary, keep up the excellent work.

Gary - Someone asked who are you going to root for now that the Jets are out? You cannot root for the Pats! Pick Peyton and the Colts or LT’s Chargers. Anyone but the Pats!!!

Just got to see the sad episode - been out celebrating the PATS win.
I almost felt sorry for Gary.
But then I realized it’s just a game and just another season gone by.
But then again, I’m a PATS fan.
So, to you Jets fans, as they say most years about that OTHER Boston team:
It was a great year anyway…
    There’s always next year…
At least they made the playoffs…
    There’s always next year…
    Nobody expected much anyway…
    There’s always next year…
Not bad for a rebuilding year…
    There’s always next year…
At least Chad was healthy all year…
AND of course, there’s always next year!!!
    GO PATS!!!!!!!!!!!

Gary, great episode about the Sirah, by the way. Always an education.
QOTD - a nice Port or some champagne - you like bubbles?

I give episode 161 an 82. The vaynerchuk was not nearly as impressive, or as oakey as the VAY-NER-CHUKS I have seen at other times.

QOTD: No such thing as sad wine, because wine is bottled joy. When the going gets tough, the tough drink Wild Turkey out of the bottle. Or maybe a really big Simpsons cup. Wouldn’t hurt to have a beer or two or three along with it either.

    Gary,

We now live north of Pittsburgh, but remain Pats fans, from the 15 years we lived in New England. The game was a lot closer than the score; your Jets scared the (fill-in-you-own-expletive-here) out of us Pats fans, and would have been deserving victors had they won. Your health is good; you have an enjoyable vocation that benefits others; things could be worse. Nonetheless, I sympathize with you (heck, I’ve been a Raiders fan since the late sixties–you should be consoling me!). Thanks for your terrific contributions to my wine education and enjoyment.
