Probably the second comment I have left on this episode. I have tried dolcetto since. I enjoy Di Dogliani best up to now. They tend to be more robust which I enjoy. I've had a Vigna del Pilone 2003 and 2005 and the Contrevent di Alba 2005. Tonight, I am drinking a Pecchenino Siri D'Jermu 2005. Awesome stuff! Thank you Gary!

Ha ha ha... When you hate a former Jet, you REALLY hate a former Jet. Ive always hated the bugger, so there you go. Got to have the love for my Hawks always and forever. QOTD: Never had one, but this episode has inspired me to buy a bottle at the wine shop the next time I make spaghetti. Me, with a little bit of you........ Also, whats with the "lets take a sniff?" You need to bring back the sniffy sniff, Gary.
  • QOTD - I am all about trying a Dolcetto since I have yet to try one.

I had my doctor’s appointment yesterday. I’m doing fine. My diet’s over. I’m drinking wine again. I’m having my first delcetto ever. It’s 2006 lo Zoccolaio Delcetto d’Alba. I’m liking it. Thanks Gary. It’s taking me back to an earlier time I can’t identify. To me this is real red wine. I need to try some more delcettos.
  • I'm finally going to try my first Dolcetto this afternoon, I'm completely stoked.
  • Chris Turyk
You mentioned rose aspect in wine, one of my favorite whites, Kim Crawford 06' Marlborough Sauv. Blanc after breathing for 2-2.5 hours was strait rose pedal on the bouquet. I've been looking for that in a lot of wine i buy. great with duck for some reason.

Gary, I love Dolcetto as well, it always seems to have great balance and character. The QOTD is hard to answer(Italian wine names are difficult to remember) but I really enjoyed the Altare that we had with my wife's beef stroganoff a few nights ago. Congratulations on your very well deserved success.

I'm down with the Big D! my favorite was one I found for 7 bones on the discount rack..

I believe it was an Abbona Dolcetto di Dogliani?

Those who love roses should really try a Lacrima Morro d'Alba!
  • For the price Dolcetto replaced Barbera for my go-to pasta wines long ago. Actually, at 12-16 bucks they have gone up in price but still a good value.
  • QOTD:

Never had it...its on my list now though!

Have been trying to learn about Italian wines. I'd say I've liked 90% of the Dolcettos I've tried, 100% of the Brunellos, and only 50% of the Barberas or Chiantis... So for $15 Dolcetto is definitely near the top of my list!
  • SoCal
QOTD: Have not had it yet but I will be on the look out ;)

    Hi Gary,
please tell me, how do you evaluate colour. You are saying on the show that this colour is better than that colour, this is the best colour...
I don´t really go too crazy about the colour and rather think that it is an indicator for grape type, age of wine, region of production and vintage and don´t really rate the colour because it doesn´t have much influence on the enjoyment.
Do you think that a Shiraz from Barossa Valley has a "better" colour than a Pinot Noir from Nuits-Saint-Georges and should be therefore rated higher?!
And please: If you really like a region and rave about it take ten seconds to learn how to pronounce the name. Peeet mon tae!? A new kind of martial arts or a region in the north west of Italy.
    Sincerely, Konst
  • I've recently enjoyed the Castello dei Poggio Dolcetto, which is DOC Monferatto. Very drinkable, with both black and red fruit, nice sweet oak, dried fruit, fruitcake; nice complexity for about $19.

Never had a Dolcetto, and I'm looking forward to change it !
  • Jay
Well I tried the Dolcetto D'Alba Bricco Galluccio Destfanis like I said I would and all I can say is wow. I brought it to a blind tasting of reds we had at a friends house and everyone loved it. Nobody there ever had a Dolcetto before and all were surprised by it. At only 15 bucks from Bevmo we all agreed it was a steal. So once again thanks Gary and the crew at Wine Library for making my world a little better.
  • joebot
Freaking awesome show!! I'll look into Dolcetto tommorow! Sat. is wine hunt day !!

    Thanks again Gary,

QOTD: Just drank the 2005 Enzo Boglietti Dolcetto d'Alba Tiglineri earlier this week. It was my first Dolcetto but definately won't be my last. I can really see why it's the wine you order at a restaurant.

    Great Episode!!!
  • Karl Laczko
So, you've changed your name then, seems shorter than before :) ?
Nice bottle swig at the end.

QOTD - Dolcetto is unknown for me, although I have just tried a Roero from Piemonte, which wasn't bad at all.

    Thundercats, Ho................................
  • GrapeStuff
QOTD: Never had Dolcetto - maybe I will soon (hinty hinty)
  • QOTD I had a dolcetto in the trattoria that sits directly below the tower in barbaresco that you see on the produttori labels. Had it with one of the simplest but most amazing food experiences i have had...a wonderful egg noodle pasta...so basic but soooo fresh... all followed by one of the best tasting times i have had in barbaresco.

Little behind on my wine watching. Great show!..I'm a fan of Dolcettos, but have forgotten about them, thanks for the reminder. Great show!
  • WINO
Not a sherry guy and I think this show confirms that.

You like the taste of nuts in your mouth? No wonder I disagree with your scores. Ha Ha Ha

Can't wait for the big announcement!
  • Kristen
Oh yeah, and props to the montage...pretty flippin amazing. And classic clips from episode #148 one expanding the palate...including white pepper, hot peppers, and the ever important terroir!
  • Kristen
I'll definitely have to find this now in the wine shop....or if we don't have it, I'll most certainly lobby for some shelf space. Thanks introducing me to another new type of wine.
  • Grapedigger
Never had a Dolcetto...I'll definitely pop one this weekend, thanks to you...
  • Tommy Vernieri
QOTD: My wife had a glass of Dolcetto at a restaurant once and I gave it a try... did not like it. Now I'm curious though, I'll have to give it another go.
  • New World Wayne
    Cool - but what's a Thundercat ?
  • cruster
Gary, I'm a pretty old vayniac - I've been watching since about episode #60. When watching this Dolcetto episode, I've realised how much I've learned about wine thanks to your vlog. I do read a lot about wine, I do go to wine-tastings and contests, I do try undiscovered, but there's always something on your show, that makes me feel like "oh, I've learned something new once again". Thank you so so much for this great feeling.
  • Great show, and the montage at the end was awesome. Dolcetto is very under-rated, and it's sad. There are some lesser known areas producing great Dolcetto in Piemonte. We import one from Ovada, and it's awesome. Although I like Dolcetto better, when we present it at tastings next to the Barbera, the crowd leans towards the Barbera. More for me.

QOTD: Favorite is either ours, (I wouldn't import it otherwise), or the Pecchenino Dolcetto di Dogliani Siri d'Jermu. Ours: Seiterre Dolcetto d'Ovada Superiore DOC.
  • Autoproxy
QOTD - Yes, I've had a few Dolcettos. I haven't had any noteworthy ones except a glass that I got at some bar that had a bit of a gasoline-flavor-infusion that was at first absurdly disgusting but then really grew on me. But I never found out the name of the producer.
  • Keith L
Another good show and another couple wines I need to try, thanks.

Do not remember trying Dolcetto, looking forward to it.
  • Renee Anderson
QOTD: I have tried Dolcettos, I'm very interested in them although I know very little. My first was from Bonny Doon, and as per California, was a fruit bomb, at least compared to the way you're describing them. I loved it. I then moved into Italian, of which I know nothing. My second Dolcetto then was at a restaurant, Cascina Bruciate, again I just picked it. It was good, not great. Then I picked up one from a store and it was horrible, like balsamic vinegar but not sour. Yuk. But I'm still going to try them.

    Hi,
Does anyone know the episode # for the very last clip on this show? It was the one with Gary on the couch and he chewed on something and spit it out and poured some Champagne in his mouth. It looked really funny! I can't find the episode though.
  • Scott S
OHHHHH....forgot to mention Gary...I live 20 minuted away from Marshall University. I wonder who's alma mater that is?????
  • Scott S
Enjoyed the show....never tried Dolcetta but, I will soon. Great video at the end.
