QOTD Two (2) WL cases of 2005 futures. Should get more though!

Need to get the Wine Spectator issue.

QOTD: Gary, I hit the 2005 Bordeaux futures HARD, baby, VERY HARD. I’ve never bought so much wine before. While I have about 1,000 bottles in my cellar, I bought 8 cases!!! And I cannot WAIT to get them. I even ordered two magnums of the 2005 Sansonnet – just because. I have leaned heavily on your recommendations on this one and it looks like I won’t be disappointed. Thanks, Gary!

I have been following your advice since the beginning. I have about 8 different cases to pick up this year and can’t wait to try them. I also orderd some big bottles. You were right on!

Don’t have any 05 Bordeaux put away, started watching you too late to catch the wave before the prices blew past my budget. Your passion about the vintage will have me looking at the local shops to see if any are available and affordable. Keep up the passion, spread the message and good luck on reaching your 2 year anniversary.

    Definitely brought in another dimension.

QOTD. Thankfully I was in pretty early with WLTV and listened to your advice on the ‘05 Bordeaux and got all my futures from WL. I got a little over 5 cases of everything in the entry level under $50. You know, but the lesser stuff on good vintages and good stuff on lesser vintages. Plus I’ll have some early drinking bottles to give a try as we go. They include some of GV’s favorites like the Valrose Alienor, Croix de Gay, Pontac Lynch or Montviel and some of my favorites like Haut Bergey, Haut Bages Liberal or Marquis D’alesme Becker.

BTW. When are they going to ship? Will you wait to receive all of them to start sending out?

QOTD2. I was born in the States to Spanish parents, but was raised in Spain since I was three years old. I only came back when I was 25 and have been here now for 8 years. I travel a lot internationally for work and pleasure so I’ve watched WLTV from pretty much every in the world!

Happy two year Anniversary! Here’s to many more years to come!

GV! It’s wonderful to have you back in real-time mode! I have to say, regarding the folks who didn’t like the Leocadie Minervois, I can understand why they wouldn’t be in love with it. I forgot that you had featured this wine on the show, and tasted it a few days ago without watching the thankgiving episode again (I like comparing your palate with mine). In short, if you don’t like black/white pepper, you simply wouldn’t like it. The beets and licorice are secondary, and much harder to pinpoint compared to the peppery notes. It was fantastic with a little grilled venison loin -the real thing, not that farm-raised stuff ;)

My 2005 Bordeaux story? Well, about 3 months ago I tried my first red bordeaux (2001 vintage, but very old world and I love it). Since that day, I’ve spent more money in 2005 bordeaux than I’ve spent all other wine combined. No joke… and I can’t really afford it!

Canadian here, but more to the point, a Canadian Senior Citizen. So as far as tasting goes, my concern for futures runs more to Ensure. And neither of my kids or their spouses are into wine (or alcohol). Where did we go wrong?

QOTD: I have bought ZERO 2005 Bordeaux. I had an amazing oportunity to buy 3 bottles of 2000 Chateau Margaux for $500 a bottle and that took up all….ALL of my 2005 Bordeaux money. I would love to get some….but my state doesn’t offer futures. So I am only buying what I can…leagally this time. Hopefully I will find a bottle or two while I am down in NJ in a few weeks…but I’m not an overly serious Bordeaux lover.

Good show Gary, but truthfully, Bourdoux wines scare the hell out of me. The price point is way up there and my knowledge of Bourdoux is so low that I am afraid to spend the money on a wine from a region that rides the coatails of the major players and charges a price similar to theirs just because they can put Bourdoux on the label. I have tried the Mouton Cadet 2004 and thought it was good for the price and I have a 2005 Mouton Cadet white Bourdoux in the cabinet that I haven’t tried yet. There is my Bourdoux story as pitiful as it is.

QOTD: We got two bottles each of Château de Reignac and Château Valrose Cuvée Alienor. I guess Château La Fleur des Pins Graves Supérieures doesn’t count, does it?

    All from you Gary =).

It’s going to be really really hard to not drink them young.

QOTD: no bordeaux. I can’t roll that deep man, even the futures were way to expensive for me. I’m not in a place where I can squirrel it away, I need wines I can drink and enjoy now until I have a nice cellar.

    QOTD2: Canada baby!!!

    Hey Gary,

Unfortunately I live in Michigan and was unable to order futures of the 2005 Bordeaux from you or any other shop outside of MI. The local wine cellar wouldn’t allow me to purchase futures either. However, I was able to purchase 10, 2005 Bordeaux blends from the wine cellar. I can’t wait for spring time when I will be making a mad rush to the cellar the day they come in. Till then… more homework!

SQOTD: I’m from Minnesota, which, contrary to popular belief, is not in America, But is actually adjacent to hell.

QOTD: Rolling under the ‘05 radar, which is to say, my wallet was as empty then as it is now.

Huge shout-out to “cma82″. Love your comment, right there with you.

QOTD: Got in a bit late since I only started watching WLTV a year ago but have 30 bottles of mixed appelation. Now I just need to be patient !!

Nice episode Gary … am huge fan of Bordeaux. Was in France a couple of weeks ago and was hoping to pick up some deals. It turns out the wines are even more expensive than what I can get here (eg: 2004 Pontet Canet was selling for 42 Euros compared to just under $50 here !)

Had the chance to invest in some ‘05 about a year or so ago but unfortunatly had zero cash.
Still broke but will ask some friendly wine merchants if they have any bottles lying around they are willing to part with without too much of a mark up.
Will play the “I am young in the wine trade and did not know” card. Hope it works.

Oh yeah, am from Manchester in the UK but now live in Chester

QOTD: Better positioned in older Bordeaux. Not much ‘05. Will buy the sea of the lower level stuff when it comes in. Can’t wait 20-30 years to drink it because I may not get to it. Don’t intend to leave a cellar to my offspring.

Interesting Bordeaux story. I bought about 4 cases of Bordeaux futures, locally in DC, in Spring of 2006 as they began to rave about them. Shortly after that, I began to watch an occasional WLTV episode. About September of 2006, I became a regular WLTV viewer and heard the admonitions to buy 2005. That Xmas, I received a couple of Border’s Books gift certificates. Right after Xmas, I stopped at Border’s to buy myself a nice cookbook. But, instead, I saw The Southeby’s Wine Encyclopedia 4th Edition. Armed with that book and the information that it provided, I started buying 2005 Bordeaux futures. After the first couple of additional cases of Saint Emilion and a few left-banks, I thought that I was set. Then, based on the white Graves some friends and I used to drink 30 years ago and the memories it invoked, I bought some Carbonnieux Blanc. Pretty soon, I was convincing myself to buy 6 bottles of this and 3 or 6 bottles of that on a regular basis. I even splurged on a few Angelus and Cos D’estournels–I expect to sell most of those unless my palate becomes more discerning over time (I hope). Again, I thought that I was done. Over time the hype continued, and I continued buying. I even bought another case of Sauternes recently. When I was all done (and I’m pretty sure I’m done now), the damage was 35 cases and untold 1,000’s of dollars. My rationale for this extravagance was that this is a once in a lifetime event and it’s wine that I’ll have and enjoy for the rest of my life. The problem now is where to put it all.

I love White Bordeauxs!!!! And you can find some cheaper whites from Bordeaux out there- I like the 2004 Chateau Fort de Roquetaillade and I absolutely loved the 2006 Chateau Ducasse Blanc (both were only $15)! Yummy stuff.

QOTD: I now have two ‘05 Bordeauxs. One from Margaux which has a note on it saying “Don’t drink! Let it be for at least 10 years!” and now a bottle of the Secrets de Cardinale. This is because I roll as a CKC and because I don’t have a cellar. But I can’t wait till I have a cellar (and hopefully the dinero to back me up) and then I can buy as much wine as I want. :)

I will purchase my ’05’s at a Bordeaux wine tasting and release party in Vancouver,Canada. I am planning to stock up and go into debt if needed.

Subquestion: Like Mork, I am also from Ork.

2005 Bordeaux, NOT. The pricing is NUTZ and I am not interested at all in crazy pricing, because, let’s face it, tomorrow it’s (all wine) all just piss.
