Interesting show. I did a spit take when Gary brought up Mark Lemke. Priceless!

Interesting concept, kegs of wine. As an individual, I would get bored with that much of one wine for personal drinking…now a party or something it would work.

    QOTD: No idea.

i love the concept. Agreed that the long window of drinkability is perfectly suited for neighborhood bars and any restaurant. It is so frustrating when I go to a local bar with friends and their wine by the glass is Fetzer (at $7 a glass at that!!!)

I would probably not buy it for my personal consumption in the home b/c I like to change things up a bit but would consider it for a party. We have downed 15 bottles at our poker parties in the past and a wine keg would be an interesting conversation piece as well.

Thanks for the education, GV! Awesome job as always.

I LOVED THAT! I can’t understand why restaurants wouldn’t jump all over that more. I would seriously consider using it for parties. I couldn’t quite see how to get one here. The Bottle Barn site isn’t very informative.

Wine kegs and the keg mentality represent everything the wine drinking experience should elevate us from, the mass market commodity mindset in which the U.S. is so so mired. The notion of a wine keg brings to mind the “tanker truck of plonk” from Sideways pulling up in front of one’s house and dispensing a river of cheap swill.

Thank you for educating us on wine kegs. I never heard of them before. QOTD – I have no idea, but it must be high for it to be the QOTD. So I will guess 1 million per year.

Velly, velly interesting; the concept is really cool, man i’m excited as i picture doing some wine kegging at family parties and stuff. i think for really super high quality wines that i want to sit down and savor–obviously a keg wouldn’t be the choice, but aside from that, for toting a keg of vino to a game or party–Rad! QOTD: figuring there are thousands of little trattorias and osterias in Italy, each with their own little keg of wine…probably at least 500,000.

Wow! Great idea! The glass bottle with cork is what, AD1650 technology? It is great to see someone applying modern tech to wine. Stainless steel and nitrogen is a no brainer! I would love to buy a keg say 1/2 that size, maybe 6 bottles? with 89-91 point wines in it and use it as my house wine. Biggest problem for a regular wine drinker is what to do with the 1/2 bottle left over every night(assuming you don’t want to get smashed every single night!) I use argon gas, but am never quite happy with the results. Great concept! Scale down the container and upgrade the wine and I say you will sell thousands of kegs.

QOTD: Just a guess…since the population is 60 some odd million…I would say that somewhere around 20 million kegs are sold annually in Italy. But that’s honestly just a guess.

  • I think it’s very sustainable. I dream of the day that this system is sold in Panama. I’d be a customer for sure. Thanks for showing us this innovation. QOTD: No idea, but must be a lot.

I agree with some of the notes below that it might be cool to do a smaller one, ala boxed wine, although I wonder how that would affect cost structure

I would defintely try that out if I saw it at a bar or restaurant, great episode (although I’m not sure why you filmed in a parking lot??)

    QOTD: no freaking clue.

Good show once again. Maybe you should try using a little mike for the outdoor shoots though – the background noise was a little much. I was very impressed by the environmental angle on these at the end. Many places don’t recycle green or brown glass, and saving 15 bottles and all the enviro impacts associated with them could make a significant difference for a restaurant which might go through one or two of these a week.

  • I would so buy a $15-20 level wine in a keg. I drink wine every night so this would last about 3 months for me. Why aren’t restaurants eating this up?

But what about a limited release of Vayniac Cab in kegs? Would make great prizes or charity auction items!!!

Wine Kegs…..hmmmm interesting. A huge factor of an average consumer who drinks wine is the perceived value, the packaging plays a huge part, hopefully shows like this are changing that! Environmentally these kegs are great!!!!

    QOTD: 100,000 kegs anually

My husband and I got a kick out of that every time you had to swirl you put your glass on the table.
That is a DS, deliberate swirler, with a little practice you should be able to do it in the air.
