  • My thank you goes out to you Gary. Nice theme, where on Earth did you come up with it? (wink)
QOTD: Each wine I try has no preconcieved notions attached, so I can honestly say I’m never really disappointed in a wine. I either like them or not. Where have I heard that line before?

QOTD – Someone was kind enough to let me try some of a special edition 2000 Silver Oak cab. I expected it to be fabulous and it was just OK.

    Great show Gary,
QOTD;It would have to be Silver Oak(Alexander Valley)2003
i thought it would bring a whooooooooooooole lot more thunder for it’s price range.

QOTD: The most recent big disappointment was an ’03 Edmunds St. John Bassetti Vineyard Syrah that I brought to an offline and it just didn’t show very well: off-bottle, bottle shock, something not quite right

    Gary,

I finally stopped lurking, your QOTD got me. The 2006 Campus Oaks Old Vine Zinfandel. Like everyone, I enjoy finding a good wine for a good value and the 05 was very good for under $15.00. The 06 tastes too much like sugary strawberry candy, but in a bad way. I hope they’ll get the flavor back for next year’s release. Other than that, I don’t think I’ve ever been disappointed with a good wine.

    Keep up the great work!

QOTD: 2006 Domaine Diochon Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes, I expected more but actually liked the 2007 Domaine Dupeuble Pere et Fils Beaujolais a lot more.

Also, the 2004 Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva. Popped and poured at a restaurant and drank it out of tiny glasses. Ick! It needed at least two hours decanting for all of the funk to blow off, too bad the restaurant said they had broken all of their decanters. They gave us better glasses when we ordered the 2000 Parusso Langhe Bricco Rovella, which gave us some time to let the Grenache breathe a little.

QOTD: Yamhill Valley Pinot Blanc. It had noxious fumes that had to blow off first and after an hour or so it almost smelled like it had gone bad. One taste and it was clear it was just awful wine. I don’t plan on finding out whether it was just my bottle or if that’s just what they call wine.

  • Interesting show once again! I was really hoping the Green and Red zinfandel would bring a little thunder since I am such a nasty zinner…..

QOTD – the last wine that really disappointed me (us) was the 2003 Stags Leap Wine Cellars SLV Merlot, a special wine club offering. It was somewhat thin, bitter, and in a blind tasting, regardless of the price point, I’ll bet way more people would prefer a Columbia Crest Grand Estates merlot for $11 than this wine (I think it was about $50). Before that, the wine that disappointed me the most was a 2000 Stags Leap Wine Cellars Fay Vineyards Cab. Yup… another SLWC wine. Come to think of it, we had about 6 Stags Leap wines in a row from the cellar that rarely rose above average. We actually moved a bunch of them into our “daily drinkers” rack because it was obvious that they were going nowhere fast. And at $40 to $100 a pop, that caused a major disturbance in my dome. I will say, however, that at our wedding reception a few weeks back, we used a 1998 SLWC SLV cab for our toast, and it completely rocked!!! I think Stags Leap went through a funk for several years. Hopefully their new owners, Chateau Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and the Antinori’s will get them back on track. Cheers!

This guy needs to be eliminated. What an embarrassment to the Jets, the tri-state area, and males everywhere!

QOTD: A couple of ‘value’ wines from the Baron Philippe de Rothschild brand – the ‘Escudo Rojo’ was recommended by the usually excellent Matt Skinner books, but this was absolutely awful, and the basic French chardonnay is equally poor.

  • The Foppiano petit syrah was supposed to be the best but I thought it was dull.Spicy and flat for the reputation it has I would have rated it 70 points.A Few wines I am impressed with are Stratten Lummis Cab and Ghost Block

QOTD: A bit generic, but I had a cab recently that had ZERO flavor…it was so bad I forgot where it was from.

Nice, but weird, theme show, Gary. But let’s think about Brett Favre for a little bit. Let’s see, the last time you had a 40+ year old QB it was Vinny I think. Hmmm. OK, Brett will make the Jets a better team, but he won’t make them a good team. And he’s older than you, dude.

Not a big fan of the Brett, although his talent is very real.
QOTD – I purchased a Minervois while travleing and it cost ~$30 and it was a very dull effort – I think you say “meh”.
