qotd: never really got any real high end zin’s, I remember liking the dickinson vineyard from ravenswood, gino’s vineyard from sbragia, and one of the higher end renwood’s can’t remember which

not to defend any of those wines at all but 2005 was certainly not a good year for California zin.
I can’t imagine wanting to drink a zin with thanksgiving

QOTD: Variety of Peachy Canyon zins gets me. Favorite is either 2004 or 05 Old School House depending on the night. The pepper is under control, lots of complexity, and jammy/chocolate goodness.

At $18, a spectacular Zin. Loved the show. Keep those Blind Tasting Shows coming!

QOTD: My favorite zin, over the years, has been Turley’s Dogtown Vineyard (Lodi) Zinfandel. It always has a wondrous balance of fruit and spice.

I am not a fan of Zinfindel. I think Zinfindel wines are very overated.

QOTD: I am lovin’ Michael Davids 7 Deadly Zins, def. my favorite out there right now.

We’re doing a blind zin tasting next week in my sommelier course, can’t wait. How appropriate!

My favorite Zin, despite not trying it for a while, has been Bella out of Sonoma. We tasted their wines after Martinelli and Ridge and Bella had the best balance of alcohol, fruit and tannins. Their Syrah is dynamite also.

When it comes to wine, there is no ingredient more important than location. The land, air, water and weather where grapes are grown are what make each wine unique. I, as a wine enthusiast, believe that a wine?s true origin should clearly be identified on its label so that I can make an informed decision when purchasing and drinking wine. If you agree with me, you should sign the Petition to Protect Wine Place Name and Origin. By doing so, you are joining a growing list of consumers and wine regions like Napa Valley and Champagne France, in demanding that wine labels maintain and protect the integrity of wine place names. • Joel Peterson is still the Zenmaster of Zin. He can make a dynamite zin in a terrible year. Belloni and Dickerson have knocked my socks of the past 2 years.

thanks for another good episode. I haven’t been drinking much zin lately, so i don’t have a current favorite.

I liked when you used to give your scores right after tasing the wines instead of waiting until you unveil them. I like to hear it all at once so your tasing comments are still fresh in my mind.

  • Haven’t had that many. The best i’ve had was Bonny Doon Cardinal Zin. 75-point wine, 95-point artwork.

Ridge Lytton Springs Zin is a readily available, consistently excellent wine. Also Sobon Estate’s Zins. On recent trip to SF dipped into Sonoma’s Unti Vineyard’s stellar stuff…try them if you see them.

Edizone Pennino from Rubicon estates tops the charts for me.

Zins used to be where you could get good wine at reasonable prices. Unfortunately all the CA wines seemed to be overpriced now, and most good Zin comes from Cali.

I made a special trip to Bella recently and was really underwhelmed – except for their late harvest zin, which had a really special (out of this world!) taste. Carol Shelton absolutely blew my socks off! She makes a whole bunch of insane zins!

I would have to go with Jessie’s Grove 2003 Zin. Lots of fruit on the nose and on the pallet. Lingers forever on the pallet and tastes like chocolate raspberries with a touch of fig and earth. Silky with no “hotness”. Just a great wine, ~$18 when I got it.

QOTD: It’s easy to say that the Calodos, Turleys and Carlisles are great, and many of them are, but for a real treat at half the price ($18.00-$20.00), there’s a small grower/producer who is doning some fantastic things with Zins and Zin blends.

His name is David Coffaro of David Coffaro Vineyard and Winary on Dry Creek Road, north of Healdsburg. The only problem is that he sells only in California and via mailing list, but I believe the list is still open. Great stuff, and a great guy to talk with. He’s very generous with his product, which will not disappoint at all.
