qotd: never really got any real high end zin’s, I remember liking the dickinson vineyard from ravenswood, gino’s vineyard from sbragia, and one of the higher end renwood’s can’t remember which

not to defend any of those wines at all but 2005 was certainly not a good year for California zin.
I can’t imagine wanting to drink a zin with thanksgiving

I have been enjoying the Diamond Coppola 2003 Zin. It has a wonderful smoky finish to it.

Hey Gary. I live in Amador County near the Shenandoah Valley wine country. The area is best known for its Zinfandel but many other varietals are grown. My favorite Amador Co. Zin is from Montevina Vineyards. Maybe a WLTV show on wines from a different California valley would be interesting?

  • My favorite zin is from the Maple vineyard in Dry Creek Armita or Dutcher Crossing.

  • I always like the blind reviews. My favorite Zin is the only one I’ve had, a Kendall Jackson.

    Sorry about the Jets, Gary.

  • What a classic show…”cliff wines” that’s a new term. Where did Casper go?

QOTD: It gets lame WS reviews…but I love, love, LOVE the Scott Harvey 2005 Old Vine Reserve Zinfandel. It’s elegant and classy…it reminds me the difference between Marylin Monroe & Jessica Alba…give me Marilyn any day.

GV- Love your show and especially like the blind tastings. QOTD – Frank Family Zinfandel 2005 and Orin Swift “The Prisoner” which is a Zin blend. I have been dodging Hurricanes Gustav and worrying about Ike. It’s good to be home again watching your show with a bottle of vino. Cheers!

Cliff Wine??? Does that mean there is no finish, it just falls off the cliff???

  • Great episode as always. Learning more everyday.

QOTD: Actually since I have really started drinking wine and trying to figure out flavors and such I haven’t had a Zin yet. It’s on my list, but as a newbie, can only move so fast.

So glad to see that Los Angeles County can bring the thunder (overpriced though it may be). Haven’t been a Vayniac long enough to know if you’ve had a chance to see if the bad rep L.A. wines get is deserved, but even if you had, now would be a good time to try again. In addition to the ubiquitous San Antonio Winery, quite a few others have popped up, and my wife and I are particularly fond of the Malibu Family Vineyards, which includes both the Semler and Saddlerock labels. Local radio station Indie 103.1 (recently listed by Rolling Stone Magazine as the best radio station in the country) has a regular feature on Wednesday mornings with their morning show host Joe Escalante (from The Vandals) called “Wino Wednesday”, when they taste wines with guests or noted local sommeliers. Perhaps you might consider a trip to the City of Angels to see for yourself. My wife and I would be glad to “link you up”!

I try not to spend over $20 on zin. For under $15, I like 4 vines and klinker brick.

Great show – I never knew they made wine in LA….

Four Vines always brings the thunder with zins. Some of their single vinyard efforts are fantastic.

  • QOTD: Sobon Estates Old Vines is what initially turned me on to Zin and it’s always held a spot in my black, little heart.

I’m a big fan of most of the Turley zins I’ve had…have a bottle of the Old Vine that will be opened soon. Just got back from Napa, and we tasted some solid zins from Frank Family and Cosentino (Reserve) as well.

Redwood Valley Zins rock! My Favorite is Graziano Kazmet ’04.
    But then I am prejudiced.
