Classic East coast vs West coast personality contrasts: Mile-a-minute, raw, in-your-face, call ’em like I see ’em, no “holes” barred, “you tawkin to me?!?” take no prisoners “bubble yum gum paintball shot” vs calm, pensive, overeducated, painfully thought out, esoteric, eccentric (kooky), mellow, wet stones/minerality treehugger California. Not to say that one is better than the other, just observations.

Randall Grahm, one of my wine heros! Clos de Gilroy was my first Grenache and I’ve loved Grenache ever after. Looking forwarded to more Randall Grahm tomorrow.
And, Gary throttle back a tad, I know you’re excited, but let the man speak.

    Dear Lord Graham,
Excelsior! I discovered Bonny Doon in the mid Eighties via the restaurant world, and under the tutelage of an owner/operator who had an eye for the culturally refined, as well as the unique, the artisinal and artistic, as well as the offbeat. You’d made a lasting impression all those years ago, and I thank you for your efforts, along with those of your colleagues, Mssrs. Alban, Lindquist,Tolmach, et al.
GV – I’m sorry, but people have said it again and again. Shut yer pie hole! We know it’s your website, and you’ve been here and there, etc., but there is no excuse for this rudeness. I am highly offended, and you come off like a bufoon.

QOTD – I was familiar with BD, but did not understand all of the changes going on. I thought of them as an interesting company with an interesting owner and wine, but now I have a much better appreciation of the owner and winery. Thanks to both of you for the 2 part show.

  • Excellent show guys.

Gary I found your discussion on screwcaps interesting. Really interesting that you said “no problem yet?” – when talking about screwtops. I’d always say “no problem yet?” when talking about corks. Gary you said you asked “how many people don’t drink wine sealed with scewtop?” in Australia you’re more likely to hear the question “how many people wont buy wine sealed with a cork?”

Looking forward to seeing part II.

    cheers
    Andrew

…you come off like a buffoon…shut yer pie hole…shut your yammering skull cave…????
Gary, you are getting hammered. Again-why I love this show. Never know what to expect.
I’m a little late to the party due to work. Saved watching these episodes just for tonight (Saturday).
Will comment more after PART 2.
The guests do need their own spit bucket – might I suggest one w/ the Cowboy Star on it. I’m just saying

What a shame. Randall Grahm is so interesting, but he barely gets a chance to talk. This host (sorry) is downright irritating to listen to, and he doesn’t shut up.

  • Interesting episode. I like what you guys have to say about ‘subtle wines’, your differening perspectives. Fun stuff. Have never tried these wines but am curious now. In my experience trying wines GV has recommended, he does value balance and subtlety, which you wouldn’t think such an over-the-top guy would. Anyway, now to watch Ep. 2.

  • Great detailed episode. What a guest. You always know how to pick them. I am going to look into the varietals you reviewed. I am not familiar with Bonny Doon, so I don’t know what to say, but to keep cranking out new episodes!

Gary, a bit of criticism, but let me start by telling you i really enjoy your show. But pleeeeeeeeeeese stop interrupting your guests when they are trying to answer your questions. I’ve noticed this over and over and its annoying. In this case, Randal is very soft spoken and you kept jumping in – he could hardly finish a sentence. I realize its your show and all but its a matter for me not only of respect but continuity. I can’t follow the answers.

Great show GV – I’ve never had a Bonny Doon wine but I’m intrigued. Nice shout out to Pearl Jam too 😉

But…but…but… Randall is ignoring the one question I have on screwcaps. Sure, the wine will store better. Sure it will evolve slower and keep much longer than with natural corks. But, what if the wine is a Bordeaux that, when corked, needs to evolve for, say, 5-10 years before it becomes drinkable. With a screwcap, won’t that “non-drinkability” last much longer? I am 48 years old right now so if I were to buy wine that I really couldn’t drink for 20 years, I am starting to question whether I should buy it at all.

Anyway, great show and interesting guest. I’m going on to Part 2…

GV – I watched Part 2 first and today I circled back to Part 1.
I want to make a small critique – you need to let the guests talk. I hear you all the time. The reason you have a guest on is to let them share their experience, which we all benefit from. It almost seemed like you would ask a question and then help him answer the question.
You are better than that dude!

GV – just when I thought I couldn’t like you any more, you drop a Pearl Jam MTV Unplugged comment. You’ve sky-rocketed in my book. I seen PJ over 20 times and can’t get enough. Maybe one of the few things I enjoy more than wine.

Catching up on some old eps. Great guest, he would be even better if you let him talk. I love WLTV, but at sometime GV you are going to have to learn to SHUT UP long enough for your guests to answer! We know you are very well versed in wine. And we know that you speak around the country…how many times do we need to hear that. Let the guests finish the questions you ask.

Dude – if you want to invite as guest, invite him – but let him talk. Wow. Just rude behavior from the show’s host.

Sorry to be so late, but 4th quarter was nuts. I’m slowly getting caught up.

  • Great to hear Randall’s views and love his new approach to Bonny Doon. I’m sure we would have heard a lot more insights if Gary V had not constantly interrupted. I know Gary V doesn’t give a shit what others think but he should at least listen. From what I have seen guests on the Thunder Show are there to give Gary a platform to pontificate on his own ideas. They are there to be seen not heard with no conversation intended. A shame and a lost opportunity indeed.

I think Gary might be ADD….but that might very well be why I love him and the way he reviews wines!

Awesome episode so far, I’m curious as to how well glass closures age? I’d assume pretty close to the screw caps

Good guest, have had more of the brands he sold off than the ones he kept. Typical West Coast ex-hippie. http://www.winelx.com

  • 93/100

So many good lines of the day but have narrowed it down to the best two -Gary – ‘Why did you get into wine?’ Randall – ‘I thought it would be a good way to meet women, but it didn’t work out.’ And, Gary – ‘I’m not very well educated but my gut is batting a high percentage.’

Great double act, really entertaining show, looking forward to part two
