Of all the wines that I’ve read about, the Ice Wines piqued my interest more than any other. I stepped into the wine shop nearest my house and found a bottle of the Kiona. Was pleasantly surprised to see that you had reviewed it here. I look forward to opening and tasting it.

Gary, when’s the next time you’ll do more tastings from the cold regions?

While you’re at it, why not get back to another show of sweet wine reveiws? I’d love to see some Sauterne, Tokay (Tokaji), or Trockenbeerenauslese reviews. Especially the last two. Tell us how the nations of the Rhineland are doing as a wine producing region.

This is JJ Williams from Kiona. We have had a number of calls from your viewers… keep them coming!

We just bottled up the 2008 Ice Wine. Historically, our Ice Wine has been primarily Chenin Blanc, but for two or three years (including the 2006 vintage in this review) we blended it with Riesling. For this current vintage, we have switched back to Chenin Blanc, so even if you have had a Kiona Ice Wine recently, it would be worthwhile to check out the new 2008 vintage.

Thanks for the great review! Cheers!

Im really suprised so many people can say they don’t like iced wines. I’m obsessed. Have visited niagra region on several occasions and even did a harvest. Its like saying you don’t like chocolate. 2004 peller estate cabernet franc, unreal…

Sorry, I just had to see this past show following the Jets vs. Seahawks! At least the Jets were in it late into the season. Our Seahawks were DONE EARLY!
BTW, having visited Red Mountain AVA many times and spacifically Kiona Vinyards, I will point out that “They” are quick to point out that it is pronounced (Ky-ona) like HI ONA….whatever that means! Love your passion/obsession and your shows

ha ha ha…. I know how you feel, Gary. I was cursing the Seahawks 4 games into the season. I knew it was over then. Glad to see ( ego ego ego ) the Washington wine once again won. I keep seeing the Kiona in the stores and wonder if I should buy it. I def am now. QOTD: Ive had some quite good ice wines from Icicle Ridge up here in Peshastin, WA. Very low bottling ( around 30 – 40 cases or so ), so its pretty pricey… $70 for a half bottle. Really good stuff to me though. :)

How can you do a show on Eiswein and not feature one from Germany?

  7. January 7, 2009

    CBone

QOTD: I had a German Eisvine (sp?) once, but good luck with the name. It was lovely. I had a Canadian one from BC, and it BLEW. I like dessert wines, though I rarely drink them.

QotD – Never met an icewine I didnt like. Inniskillen is wonderful stuff. Ironically enough, they have it by the glass for a very reasonable price in the Canadian restaurant in Epcot, Disneyworld.

Cool show, didn’t know that much about ice wines and have yet to try one.

Not a fan of ice wine at all – but some good information in this show.

    Hey Gary

QOTD: Have really had an icewine that has really, really impressed me yet. The last one I drunk was Mogao Ice Wine from China – it was a pretty poor effort, but it at least fitted into the theme of icewines from around the World. I think they’re producing quite a bit in China now.

    Cheers

Ice wines! Killer. How about a show focused on my new obsession… Austrian reds? Love the show, btw.

First time to see the show and I gotta ask. Is this you after coffee or before? I’m hoping after. Seriously, good show.

I’ve tried a lot of Canadian Ice Wines and they range quite a bit in complexity and flavour. One of my faves is Vineland Estates Ice Wine. A good way to determine a good ice wine (or any wine) is to look up wine awards. The Canadian Wine Awards or the Ontario Wine Awards (done yearly) are a good way to determine a quality drop.

The next show will be on wine awards as a guide to assist in picking a good wine, or help you venture out into another varietal you’re unfamiliar with.

    Cheers

    Hi Gary,
A friend and colleague of mine here at Casa Larga turned me on to your show and I’ve visited your store the last time I was in NJ – very impressed with both!

At any rate, I wanted to introduce you to an Ice Wine produced by the Winery I work for – Casa Larga’s Fiori Vidal Ice Wine. It recently received the trophy for “Best Dessert Wine in the World” from the International Wine & Spirits Competition in London, and has been highly acclaimed at a variety of other competitions here in the states. It really is our pride and joy here in Upstate NY. Please get back to me with your address – I’d love to send you a bottle. Cheers!

Ah I love Vayner-tasks. I wonder if Kiona got more calls.

QOTD: I’m not really a fan of ice wines. I’ve only had a few, and I will keep trying, but I don’t like that syrupy-sweetness of them. I prefer something lighter and less intense. Although the Sakonnet Vineyards Winterwine (Vidal Blanc) isn’t bad. That was my go-to wine for visitors to the winery who liked white zinfindel. And they all loved it…

Jackson-Triggs Vidal Icewine. Hi Gary, I’m a wine consultant and educator (on a smaller scale than you of course), living on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. i lead courses on wine appreciation, help restaurants rationalize their wine lists and lead tastings for the public every Saturday at the best private store in the community I live in. Canadian icewines have established a great reputation on the world market, particularly in Japan. It’s too bad you didn’t have a better example than the J-T Vidal for your 599th episode. J-T is one of VINCOR’s brands. VINCOR is Canada’s largest wine company now owned by Constellation Brands. I enjoy your show. Happy New Year.

    Gary,

Just wanted to clarify a few comments from some viewers regarding the Bonny Doon Vin De Glaciere.

Long story short, we now make it out of Riesling (sharp acidity and very very focused) under the Pacific Rim wines. It made sense to us (may be to us only) since it is made out of Riesling.

Just wanted to leave a note in the event folks were confused – I am sometimes.

QOTD: Egon Muller Eiswein – Very nice….

    I’ve never had ice wine! : (
Actually I’m watching this a few days late so I’ve already seen what tomorrows is about… but I’ve already forgotten! I think it will be about… brandy! No, I’d remember that. That would be amazing though!!

QOTD: The only Icewine I’ve had is Jackson Triggs and we enjoyed, though not quite as much as a Sauternes we tried last spring.

I enjoyed the show and I enjoy ice wines.
QOTD – 1) I have had the Jackson Triggs and and Inniskillin, both of which I like, 2) The show will be about lookin forward to the 2009 Draft.

QOTD – I have not had enough ice wines to have a favorite, but I did taste and buy some at winery in Canada near Niagara Fall. And I have had a few Germany ice wines that were good. I guess I need to try another one this week.
