Gary: I've been away for awhile, but I came back. I missed you! Hey, great show. I'm glad to see that you're still here and still hating on the oak monster. In this ever changing world, it's good to have some constants...
  • Adrian aka AnGkEr
QOTD: I don't wear but would love to see Mott with the eye liner....
  • PSPatrick
I had the 2003 Montes Alpha Cabernet and the 2005 Montes Alpha Cabernet a while ago. Therefore, I knew that the Oak Monster was coming, so I really enjoyed waiting for your reaction ;-)
  • Trying to catch up on episodes here...was away on business, and then the father-in-law from Chile came for a last minute visit. We are planning on going down this spring. If you are going to Chile, definitely think about going during March/April and catch the vendimia festivals.
Concha Y Toro makes some REALLY good stuff...check out the Terrunyo label.

QOTD: I like it all natural.
  • Dan-o
I have always enjoyed Chilean wines. I find that they have an aroma unique to any other region. I can usually pick it out of a crowd. I would call it a "minty", or almost herbal bouquet.

QOTD - I do not wear make up at all. I have never done so and probably will not start to soon.
  • QOTD: Easy, I don't where make up.

And I totally agree on the Montes Alpha Cab. boring... but like you said I sell a lot of it, but the funny thing is that when I tell people to buy some good value Argentinan Cabs they don't go back to the "Oak Monster" ;)
  • teckdeck2008
    Nice show.
Qotd: Does proactive count as make up? :p I've never been into make up at all though seriously.
  • jayhitek
I think I missed this episode. Bummer. It's a good one.
QOTD: I can't imagine Mott wearing the eye liner. He's such a burley hairy man..
I on the other hand will not wear the eyeliner.
  • Since I'm not on TV or in a kickin' rock band, I don't feel the need to sport the makeup. I don't like makeup in my wine either - it's just irritating to my palate. Although I understand why winemakers do it, it's not my style.
  • italianwinelover
Nice show shame the "oak monster" made an appearance!

QOTD: I wear as little as possible...if I forget to put it on its no biggie. The eyeliner thing is scaring me a little!
  • Don
Gary -- that's too bad to hear the 2007 Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon was overoaked and the oak monster made an appearance! A few weeks ago I rocked the 2006 and it was AWESOME!!! Was not overoaked and I rated it 89+ points. Interested to know if you've tried the 2006.

QOTD: no makeup, unless you consider purple teeth!!!!
  • ktf
Eye liner for men????????????? your scaring me!!!

    Nice show.
  • Matt
Ok I am going to eat my words...eat huge crow. I posted that I would love for you Chris Mott to buy a lav mic. In watching this episode hey you got one! Awesome yes great job sounds great! I must apologize I will get on the highest soap box I AM SO SORRY! The audio is where the show should be. I am back on the band wagon in watching the show. Gary this is great the audio has gotten out of your parents basement and to the big time! Slap me around for my earlier post.I always have enjoyed the show and now I can to the 9's. Great job guys.

Good call on GWAR Costello, don't forget those Jersey boys; The Misfits (www.misfits.com)

QOTD: none... Au natural for better or worse

I have to say that the tasting bar looks like an infomercial set (Shamwow anyone??)
  • Kittysafe
Loved the clap command at the end ;)
  • Smahlatz
Hmm - Chile is getting serious on Syrah nowadays - such a wide diversity of climates, I don't think it will be just known for Pinot Noir and Sauvignon B.

QOTD : I was Ace is a KISS tribute band !!
  • Thanks Gary

I agree about the myth of Chillean value. Often I find the wines similair in style to the more oaky, cheaper, sweeter Australian wines.

QOTD: If any a touch of nail polish.

    Cheers
    Andrew
  • Brock
    QOTD:

No make-up necessary for this mug.

    Au Naturel Baby!
  • BF
Would love to see MOTT in makeup on one show. How about for 800?
  • Jeff Smith
Good episode, yes I hate makeup and oak.

    Be cool
  • gavin
why do wine makers use oak?to add greater complexity to the wine?
They balance the oak against the fruit.argubly the better Quaility the cab fruit/and or Extraction the more oak they can use to keep everthing in balance results in more complex interesting wines when aged !!.
The Montes Alpha is a Quality wine that can take the oak.
The winemaker(one of the best in my opinion) aims for the oak and fruit to integrate correctly after maybe 5 years AGING to achieve a perfectly balance complex wine. When young 2007!the Oak maybe a little dominate but that is his choice to produce a better wine in 5 yr+.Montes Alpha 2007 cab scored 91 poins Robert Parker.People must respect why top wine makers do what they do
  • Hi Gary, it's me again Nelson, hope youa re doing great. Here are the Chilean local boys producing some value for money world class cabernets http://tinyurl.com/CabernetParadise

    Great little number that was.
I liked the change of "level". It's also nice to get a little pan of the room and see who's there with ya. Gives it a little more "real".

The Chilean wine I have had has been nothing to write home about either. In a sense yes overrated. Had a cab at a wedding reception but didn't go back for a second glass. Mmm a wine that competes with you for your "chick" isn't a good date night choice is it?

qotd, I tried some eyeliner a few times, in 1984. Makeup is like oak in a wine. Sometimes you do need some but most of the time just a touch will do. I like make up that doesn't look made up. Natural beauty need not be made up.
  • Andy
I always seek good value juice from Chile G .... Thanks for the info .

QOTD --- No makeup . All natural here.
  • Jeff R
Again, an enjoyable show. The three wines performed well, not considering the last one which had the overoaked characteristic you do no care for. I tended to get a green/herbal streak in less expensive Chilean reds. I have not had one for awaile. I'll have to revisit and see if that's true.

Does Mott really wear make up? My view of him is changing. I think your joking ... right???

QTD - none ... not for me. I would think that's too weird for any guy to wear other than if your acting/performing/appearing on tv/etc.
  • Hi Gary, how are you 2day?

Well Chilean Cabernet is world class as i have been following it since it's 1996 vintage, it was the emergence of all the Chilean big names foreign ventures like Sena, Almaviva, Clos Apalta which fetched very high price compared to the local boys of Casa Real(Santa Rita), Finnis Terrae (Causino Macul), Don Maximiano(Errazuriz), Don Melchor(Concha y Toro), Domus Aurea (Vina Quebrada de macul) Montes M ( Montes Alpha)...etc

Definitely Maipo valley is the heart of Chile's Cabernet Sauvignon but a few other boutique producers in the subregions of Cachapoal & Colchagua do make outstanding cabernets too, i do like those of Aconcagua Valley located near the coastal area and the cabernet wines have really unique red fruits taste similar to a top notch French Burgundy. I guess it's due to the cool breeze influence from the sea.

Whites are best from Casablanca Valley & do look out for a local producer Porta del Alto for their outstanding value for money Sauvignon Blanc.

    Cheers

  • Makeup is not good for skin.
  • J Crazy
    err, um...no makeup here.
  • Jim
HEEEY Gary, How about some Mexican wines from Valle de Guadalupe in Baja!!!??
    Regards!
  • Mike Felix
New vaniac - keep up the good work. Best zin ever tasted was many Rosenblums of various vintages and the best value zin ever was the 1974 Round Hill, we bought all of the wineries remaining 200 cases - unbelievable value. Zins have been king for my wife and I since 1977. There even used to be some good Zin roses in the 70's before white zin ruined that product extension.
  • Gary, that was probably the fastest show.
    I prefer a little longer.
    For the rest, keep going.

    QOTD. Never.
  • */^_^\*
dude....that lighting was not kind on your scalp. just a little FYI.

QOTD: the blue tube of blistex. not actually makeup, but i am told it makes the lips shiny (that being a secondary consideration in my case...).
  • GV,

I remember very much the Montes Alpha. I picked it up at Cost Plus thinking I had found the hidden gem, and what a dud it turned out to be. Our palates are aligned here.

QOTD: None, maybe at Halloween. But otherwise NONE.
  • Mike in C-town
Liked the new location, but LOVED the blueberry sunshine love quip.
A suggestion: if you are going to invite peeps to the tasting, get them involved.

    QOTD: hair gel
  • mrzitro
Ditto that Phil "I like the idea of taping from the store’s tasting table"
QOTD: Clearasil StayClear® Tinted Acne Treatment Cream for the zits on my azz
  • Kevin K
QOTD: I gave up makeup for lent. =)
  • phil
I like the idea of taping from the store's tasting table. It has a Malcolm Gladwell Wisdom of the Crowds kind of feel. It would have been interesting to hear what your spectators thought. May be every once in a while we can hear what the man on the street thinks.

    Makeup?
  • Derek F.
Loved the new location Gary...its always fun to taste in different environments.

QOTD: No make-up here pal :-(
