lines of the day – ‘There’s a little bit of stinkiness going on, like a pig farted on a farm’. and ‘a lot of guys are wearing eyeliner now, Mott’s been rocking it’

Chilean Cab bit of a boring category for me but GV entertaining as usual.

why do wine makers use oak?to add greater complexity to the wine?
They balance the oak against the fruit.argubly the better Quaility the cab fruit/and or Extraction the more oak they can use to keep everthing in balance results in more complex interesting wines when aged !!.
The Montes Alpha is a Quality wine that can take the oak.
The winemaker(one of the best in my opinion) aims for the oak and fruit to integrate correctly after maybe 5 years AGING to achieve a perfectly balance complex wine. When young 2007!the Oak maybe a little dominate but that is his choice to produce a better wine in 5 yr+.Montes Alpha 2007 cab scored 91 poins Robert Parker.People must respect why top wine makers do what they do

Would love to see MOTT in makeup on one show. How about for 800?

I agree about the myth of Chillean value. Often I find the wines similair in style to the more oaky, cheaper, sweeter Australian wines.

QOTD: If any a touch of nail polish.

    Cheers

Hmm – Chile is getting serious on Syrah nowadays – such a wide diversity of climates, I don’t think it will be just known for Pinot Noir and Sauvignon B.

QOTD : I was Ace is a KISS tribute band !!

Gary — that’s too bad to hear the 2007 Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon was overoaked and the oak monster made an appearance! A few weeks ago I rocked the 2006 and it was AWESOME!!! Was not overoaked and I rated it 89+ points. Interested to know if you’ve tried the 2006.

QOTD: no makeup, unless you consider purple teeth!!!!

  • Since I’m not on TV or in a kickin’ rock band, I don’t feel the need to sport the makeup. I don’t like makeup in my wine either – it’s just irritating to my palate. Although I understand why winemakers do it, it’s not my style.

  • QOTD: Easy, I don’t where make up.

And I totally agree on the Montes Alpha Cab. boring… but like you said I sell a lot of it, but the funny thing is that when I tell people to buy some good value Argentinan Cabs they don’t go back to the “Oak Monster” 😉

I have always enjoyed Chilean wines. I find that they have an aroma unique to any other region. I can usually pick it out of a crowd. I would call it a “minty”, or almost herbal bouquet.

QOTD – I do not wear make up at all. I have never done so and probably will not start to soon.

  • Trying to catch up on episodes here…was away on business, and then the father-in-law from Chile came for a last minute visit. We are planning on going down this spring. If you are going to Chile, definitely think about going during March/April and catch the vendimia festivals.
Concha Y Toro makes some REALLY good stuff…check out the Terrunyo label.

QOTD: I like it all natural.

I had the 2003 Montes Alpha Cabernet and the 2005 Montes Alpha Cabernet a while ago. Therefore, I knew that the Oak Monster was coming, so I really enjoyed waiting for your reaction 😉
