lines of the day – ‘There’s a little bit of stinkiness going on, like a pig farted on a farm’. and ‘a lot of guys are wearing eyeliner now, Mott’s been rocking it’

Chilean Cab bit of a boring category for me but GV entertaining as usual.

Gary, I like the fact you’re showing us different areas of your facility there. I also like you mixing up the wine regions and varietals. But what I don’t like is Chilean cabs. I always thought they tasted funny. Most are too oaktified for me.

QOTD: SPF 15 for the face/neck/hands with moisturizer (mildly metrosexual in the midwest). More than some men, less than others (i.e. Mott, this is bus, bus this is Mott, GV says please take your eye-liner and get under the bus – ouch.) I’m sure he’s kidding but Mott, you best get in front of the camera next time out to put this thing to bed early. Peace.

  • Great show, very interested you showed Chilean Cabs and you hit the nail on the head as far as my palate is concerned with Chilean wine – it really is just a bit overrated, particularly their Merlots which I always get a pig poop aroma from which REALLY puts me off.

QOTD: Does Hair gel count as makeup?!!!

QOTD: NEVER wear make up – I’m a bloke!! I agree about Chile, it’s a great value play around the $10-15 area. You can get a lot of good stuff in England for around £5 a lot of the time: the Cono Sur Viognier I bought today for example. I was thinking of trying that Montes Alpha; not any more! Sorry but I am terrified of over-oaked wine also, won’t go near it, never will. You’ll probably tell me off now for letting you persuade me not to get it! Don’t worry I’m an “expand your pal” kinda guy, but never tell me to buy heavily oaked wine Gary!

I like the idea of taping from the store’s tasting table. It has a Malcolm Gladwell Wisdom of the Crowds kind of feel. It would have been interesting to hear what your spectators thought. May be every once in a while we can hear what the man on the street thinks.

    Makeup?

  • GV,

I remember very much the Montes Alpha. I picked it up at Cost Plus thinking I had found the hidden gem, and what a dud it turned out to be. Our palates are aligned here.

QOTD: None, maybe at Halloween. But otherwise NONE.

Gary, that was probably the fastest show.
    I prefer a little longer.
    For the rest, keep going.

New vaniac – keep up the good work. Best zin ever tasted was many Rosenblums of various vintages and the best value zin ever was the 1974 Round Hill, we bought all of the wineries remaining 200 cases – unbelievable value. Zins have been king for my wife and I since 1977. There even used to be some good Zin roses in the 70’s before white zin ruined that product extension.

  • Hi Gary, how are you 2day?

Well Chilean Cabernet is world class as i have been following it since it’s 1996 vintage, it was the emergence of all the Chilean big names foreign ventures like Sena, Almaviva, Clos Apalta which fetched very high price compared to the local boys of Casa Real(Santa Rita), Finnis Terrae (Causino Macul), Don Maximiano(Errazuriz), Don Melchor(Concha y Toro), Domus Aurea (Vina Quebrada de macul) Montes M ( Montes Alpha)…etc

Definitely Maipo valley is the heart of Chile’s Cabernet Sauvignon but a few other boutique producers in the subregions of Cachapoal & Colchagua do make outstanding cabernets too, i do like those of Aconcagua Valley located near the coastal area and the cabernet wines have really unique red fruits taste similar to a top notch French Burgundy. I guess it’s due to the cool breeze influence from the sea.

Whites are best from Casablanca Valley & do look out for a local producer Porta del Alto for their outstanding value for money Sauvignon Blanc.

    Cheers

Again, an enjoyable show. The three wines performed well, not considering the last one which had the overoaked characteristic you do no care for. I tended to get a green/herbal streak in less expensive Chilean reds. I have not had one for awaile. I’ll have to revisit and see if that’s true.

Does Mott really wear make up? My view of him is changing. I think your joking … right???

QTD – none … not for me. I would think that’s too weird for any guy to wear other than if your acting/performing/appearing on tv/etc.

    Great little number that was.
I liked the change of “level”. It’s also nice to get a little pan of the room and see who’s there with ya. Gives it a little more “real”.

The Chilean wine I have had has been nothing to write home about either. In a sense yes overrated. Had a cab at a wedding reception but didn’t go back for a second glass. Mmm a wine that competes with you for your “chick” isn’t a good date night choice is it?

qotd, I tried some eyeliner a few times, in 1984. Makeup is like oak in a wine. Sometimes you do need some but most of the time just a touch will do. I like make up that doesn’t look made up. Natural beauty need not be made up.
