  • Oh, and I agree...I was born in 1969.
  • Great to see Jeff's passion for upholding the family tradition...very sharp and good-natured. Don't worry about us second guessing your points on the Gewurtz...when you don't spit it out, we know it is making a serious impression.

Interesting program so far. And Bono seems like a nice guy. ;-)
  • bigsemi
So far so good. Jeff seems like a cool guy.
  • pawncop
Very interesting program, very good guest. Looking forward to part II.
  • Gary & Jeff,

Great to see two young guys carrying on family businesses.

QOTD: Estate Grown should lend cache, but only on the initial purchase if there's no proof in the pudding, and satisfied repeat buyers will come to appreciate the terroir association that goes with it. An 'Estate Growers Mark of Quality' group would be an outstanding move to better validate the term, a la 'organic', although not mandated by the FDA, the BTFA?
  • Cool episodes! At first, I thought I heard the theme song from "Waynes World", but when the convo got started, I couldn't turn it off.

QOTD - Estate Bottled only means something if the vintner/viticulturalist knows what they are doing. Someone could be a fantastic wine maker but suck as a viticulturalist. In that case, "estate" could be a negative. I do love, however, that rare wine maker/viticulturalist who knows what they are doing and knows how to coax exactly what they want to from the grapes to make the wine he/she wants to. That, to me, is true artisanal wine making - regardless of scale - and if I like that style, I am willing to pay the coin for those bottles. Supporting the little guys is sort of a passion. When we travel to wine country, which we frequently do, we always try to seek out some smaller producers who might be off the beaten path. We almost always find some incredible hidden gems that way.

Gary, Huge show so far. Great guest and great infotainment. On to part 2.
  • YoungDave
Great ep. so far- seems like another solid guest!
  • J Crazy
ah yeah, only the real deals come out to comment on "part 1's"

Great chemistry. Really like this shizzz. Now, children, on to part 2.
  • very good show. I liked his knowledge.

When you said sweet sea salt, I was picturing salty peanut brittle.

I'm enjoying this but I have to get back to preparing Thanksgiving dinner.

PA sells Gundlach Bundschu wines mostly in the premium stores. The "chairman's" program offered some nice pricing on certain bottles. Now the pricier bottles aren't moving so quickly.
  • Jeff is a great guy. Psyched to see him on WLTV.
  • Toby Marcus
    HA!
Welcome to my world. '09 saw me grilling whole fish, paired with Pinot, alot!
  • Pete G
I'm here but will save my comments til the end

Say goodbye to the Eco-system, Gary. Most wild fish is un sustainable, and most farmed fish is filled with poison..
    good luck
  • Beeper
That's funny that you've decided to eat a ton of fish. I just decided yesterday to give up on liking seafood altogether. I have been trying to force myself to "expand my palate" over the last 2 or 3 years and eat more seafood, but I just cannot get over the smell. Had some lobster risotto yesterday and that put me over the top. No more. I'm done. Fine.
  • TODD
MANONTHEMOON,IF YOU HAVE NO GOOD COMMENTS,DONT!
  • A dumb Rhine king
Awesome. Jeff seems like a genuine dude. Great ep!
  • Couves
Gary, I admire your determination to eat 85% fish for a year. But before you do, you might want to google “Jeremy Piven mercury poisoning”. You don’t want to be “that guy.” At least for the sake of your future children, don’t let Lizzy join you!
  • Cool dude. Sweet glasses.
  • Mike
Try Maldon Sea Salt, it's got fabulous sweetness, not sugar as such I suppose but its really rich and intense.
  • Kelly Gottlieb
i would love to see this show but it seems the link is broken from the e-mail you sent and i cannot view it.
Can you please resend the link so i can watch this episode?
    Thanks
  • Great interview/guest so far. I really enjoy the discussion between WINE biz and wine BIZ.

Gary, have you thought of doing a discussion on the different vineyard practices, from conventional, sustainable, organic, and biodynamic?

This would be an interesting idea to get to your audience and perhaps address some issues or stigmas that they have about each practice.

    Can't wait for Part 2.
  • Charlie H.
Really great guest. Makes me want to try his wines. Love hearing about the process of winemaking from the people who are really passionate about it. Gonna have to agree with the others saying GV was stepping on his toes a little bit... but I don't think it was egregious. Can't wait for part 2!
  • holladown
great part one. that was fun.

    cheers
  • Joel
    love the guest!!
  • holy cow!...I go away for just a few days, tied up with other things and trying to crush it...and there is an absolute avalanche of guests at WLTV. I might be up late tonight, trying to catch up.
  • Kevin
Great guest! I really enjoyed listening to him and I'm looking forward to trying his wines.
  • jtp375
Good show. Jeff seems very down to earth and committed to producing a great product. Had a GB gewurtz last year and thought it was excellent.

good start - waiting for the second half - hopefully you do better than your Jets!

Sorry to see your Jets loose it :( ok - I'm not sorry at all
    GO PATS!
must have been heartbreaking since you said nothing about the game

I have a QOTD - I am wondering what does Mott look like? Has he made an appearance on any episodes? After hearing him talk a lot in this episode I was just starting to wonder (especially now that I can figure out what his age is.)
  • GH
Gary should join Toastmasters International! It will help with the show.
  • the mosk
Sup Gary! Haven't posted in a few weeks.... This dude is way cool, i think I'm gonna drive up to Sonoma, which is just over an hr away from where I am, to say hi to Jeff and try his wines... I loved his "Awesome!" when you told him you liked the new label... waiting for pt 2......

Great guest & show, Gary. Jeff and the family Bundschu are really quite the pioneers. Five tidbits not mentioned worth noting:

Gun Bun Wine Patrol- For many years they spent a huge portion of their marketing budget on Wine Patrol. Each year they picked a city, invited 30, 40 or 50 of their closest friends (and best salespeople from around the US) and threw one heck of a party...with a lot of fun (and tequila) to be had by all. I am still recovering from Austin, TX a decade ago.

The wines- Extremely terroir driven wines that have a common taste of Rhinefarm running throughout the range of varietals. Where so much wine has been homogenized and lack personality, these wines have as much a "sense of place" as any in CA. Their Estate Zin is one of the best, underheralded in all CA..i think only available at winery any more.

The Winery- A great place to visit...especially in summer if they are still running incredible Shakespeare Fest on winery grounds.

The Rebel- Jeff was responsible for fgorming Wine Brats and Wine X... and a series of wine raves designed to pair wine tasting and dance music/clubbing.

The Pirate- Jeff was involved and behind the infamous heist of the Napa Valley Wine Train, and, OMG.....seved his Sonoma Wines!!!!

    Anyway..thx again for good show.

    Steve

The guest is awesome but Gary, STOP INTERRUPTING PEOPLE. It drives me nuts when you ask a good question but we don't get to hear their answer because you talk over them.
  • Jarvis
Great show thus far. Excited to see the rest, really left us hangin. Big questions are being dished out, and I'm into it, but not sure if I'm excited to see people come to the show to be put on blast. For what its worth.
  • CK
Loved the show Gary, but I gotta agree with mjr. let your guests speak! It drives me a little crazy when you ask your guest a question and then start answering it yourself.
  • Very nice so far, waiting for part II.
  • mjr
GOOD SHOW GOOD GUEST. CONCENTRATE ON BEING SILENT AT TIMES, GIVE HIM TIME, LET HIM TALK. I'M SURE HE'S GOTTA LOTTA GOOD STUFF TO SHARE WITH US. GLAD YOU LIKED HIS 1ST WINE SO MUCH.
