EP 105 Four Viewer Picked Wines, Kinda.

Wines tasted in this episode:

Well the plan was to have four wines picked by the WLTV viewers, it didn’t work out that way. So we picked four other wines. Tune in today and see what happened. Also a new QOD.

  • QOD – China is my answer and the timing of your question is interesting. The guy in the office next to me is a fresh Yale MBA and lived in China most of his life. Just so happens today we talked about wine. Many of his friends feel drinking wine is very much a status symbol especially in China. However to make it last and to improve the taste (to them), he and many of his friends all add Sprite to whatever wine they are having. He asked me what a good wine to buy from Costco would be to mix Sprite with and I told him to go to Trader Joes. LOL

    TimF – nice work!

Don from Seattle – perhaps the Chinese appetite for wine will bail out the situation the French are experiencing.

1 – Geographical diversity and more northern latitudes gives it to China. At least in potential.

    2. – Feynman

There are Garagiste wines, and now – Garbageiste?

    Keep it up.

  • I promise I will post my tasting of the Kirkland Pauillac here. I actually can’t wait to try it. I’m betting that it isn’t really all that bad.

    Gary,

I think I’d go with India. No reason…just India.

Schnapps!!! I once drank too much Goldschlagher at a party in the Lower East Side (back when it was still the East Village!) that I passed out on the floor of the bathroom. Two things: 1) Schnapps is a sipping drink…Not meant for straws! 2) Golden flecks are just as tasty on their way up as they are on their way down!!!

    Loved the spoof!

Nice episode Gary. I said it yesterday, but, again, good spoof TimF.

QOD: It’s a toss up for me. But, I don’t want to be a wimp and not make decision. I will say China, primarily because the country is geographically more diverse, and it has the economic resources to put into the industry if it so choses. In my opinion, I think people are putting too much emphasis on the country’s cuisine to make a decision about the wine. I don’t like a lot of French food, but I love French wine. Dutch and German food is palatable, but I really enjoy Meritage and Riesling.

Gary, there is a column in the most recent Wine Spectator about California falling behind in terms of the production of “value wines.” What country, or region, do you think produces wine with the best bang for the buck?

The implications of China and/or India entering the international wine market a huge. Think about what would happen to prices if they even added 10% to supply. I’m assuming they could produce a yellow-tail equivalent for a cheaper price. However, it takes a while for a region to produce high quality wines and it takes even longer for that perception to take hold in the marketplace. Maybe with the internet and the shrinking globe, that time is shorter. Have any of the top producers scored wines from either region yet?

QOD1 Reading a bit about them, I’d pick the Chinese wine. The market is growing and quality will improve. Tasting one (or more) now should provide perspective.
QOD2 Richard Feynman – a brilliant physicist as well as being a Renaissance man.

The Chinese can copy anything…..why not wine? I would select Chine as the next big wine country. Although, North Korea has been explosive in their whining.

TimF…I too love dim sum and I ate Duck Tongue (not a joke) at the Hong Kong Dim Sum House in Chinatown (San Francisco) on my most recent visit. It was very good!!
I like Indian food better though. We have some real quality Indian restaurants in ATL and only some OK (that I know of) Chinese.

QOD…India…only because China’s economy is all ready booming and they don’t need any more money. I have read articles of how the Chinese and Japanese were buying Bordeaux futures by the barrels!

    I love the Thundercats!! Snarf!!!

So Gary and friends…I asked about Vibration a couple of episodes back. (episode 103)…
    Gary,
I have a serious question (not that the WLTV party question should be ignored).
    Vibrationâ?¦
I have a decent wine cooler and use it for the bottles that I want to age for an extended period of time. Recently the compressor of the unit has started to cause vibration when it kicks on. The vibration is noticeable even in the floor so I know that the wine is getting some/maybe a lot of vibration as well.
I have read and heard that vibration is bad for wines but how bad is it really? In the grand scheme of things am I hurting my wines? I have been in the market for a new and larger cooler all ready due to my growing collection and the number of â??05 Bordeaux futures I have purchased but I want to know how critical it is that I move my collector wines from the vibrating cooler now.
Does anyone have any advice or help?
I am looking at some of the compressor free units but the price is outrageous. I could dig a cellar in my back yard for the price of one of the 100 bottle units!!!

TimF — great job. “Nice nose. I’m getting…chicken?” That, and the great review from Consumer Reports.

A friend of mine wanted to test my wine knowledge and had me blind taste a wine to see if I could guess the varietal. The color was light red, the smell was prune and alcohol, and the taste was thin, one dimensional, with subtle hints of nothing. Cab? No. Merlot? No. Zin? No. Turns out it was the Two Buck Shiraz.

So I went in my cellar and pulled out the Little Penguin Shiraz ($6), and showed her you don’t have to pay much more to actually get a wine that tastes like wine. We now taste together once a week to keep expanding her horizons.

    Oh, and China.

  • Went to the Rosenblum tasting room in Healdsburg and disliked every wine they poured but my wife insisted on buying the chocolate port which tasted pretty much like chocolate that I isn’t such a bad thing. Have had several of their individual vineyard Zinds that were good but there cuvees are always bad to me. Ramey has impressed me for a while now with some of the best Chardonnays around and some great reds though all are expensive but usually well worth it. I would go for China having tasted both China and Indian wines though I hope those are never my only choices. I assume Tim’s recipe is meant to complement the 2$ Chuck Cab.

    TimF, too funny!

Gary, since when is 87 points a bad score? Was it the price that made it a pass?

QOD: I imagine Indian cuisine would match better with wine so I’d have to vote India.

Excellent spoof. Rosenbloom sucks and always has so no surprise there. Ditto for the Larose. Goodonya for trashing them. Moral of the story, drink real wine. You won’t find it in a supermarket though it can be cheap. As a rule, good wines aren’t made in enough quantity that chains can carry them. As for 2buckchuck, it sucks but I’ve had wine that was no better for ten times more, so if you are going to drink a chemical stew (fake tannins, acids, etc), why pay more?

    Gary –

Come on… China or India? Are you kidding? Its so hard to chose a favorite between two countries that both make such superior 70 point wines. Hell… my money is on the Jets winning back to back Super Bowls before either China or India makes a wine that is any better to drink than Two Buck Chuck. Like that will ever happen.

Just curious… what do you think is currently the best wine that no one has ever heard of?

    Keep up the good work.

    GO RAVENS!!!

At my age, there are soooo many wines I want to try from the “standard” wine-producing countries that I will be long gone before winemaking in China or India reach a level worth trying, so I would have to PAAASSSS (have a Coke instead).

For the other QOTD, Albert Einstein.

Here’s a question for you, Gary. Why doesn’t the WL contract with a winery to make a wine competitive to Charles Shaw. We could refer to it as “Two Buck Vaynerchuk.”

Great reviews. Agree with you on the Rosenblum.
How about tasting some of the Cameron Hughes wines lot 15 and 16 available in COSTCO?
    Interested in your views.
2 buck chuck is worth what you pay for it. I wouldn’t buy it unless I had a party that had to get everybody drunk for under 50 bucks.

TimF — Great job!!! Loved the consumer reports rating and the cedar plank chicken. Well done!

I’d pick China, but without good reason.

    Let’s Go Mets!

    QOTD:

In ideal world, if those are my only choices, I would pick vodka or stop drinking wine at all.

But in real life I would pick the prettiest bottle of red wine with real cork for under $10 in today’s money.

Most likely it would be India because I read that in china it is fashionable to mix fine wine with Coke.
