    Patty O,

I think I can help you. I continue to maintain my “actual” spreadsheet (which I then use to maintain the web SS). I do this because it allows me to do other things including creating a separate worksheet that, I believe, does exactly what you’re asking for. Essentially, it’s a page that lists ONLY the wines that I’ve purchased (both WLTV and non-WLTV) along with my “wish list”. I’ve added/deleted some columns that I think make sense (i.e. Qty purchased, Qty remaining, and Date 1st drank). And since itâ??s excel, it can be formatted to print nicely.

If you authorize Gary to send me your email address, I can forward it to you so that you can see what I’m talking about. Iâ??ve already done this for quite a few notable VaynIACS.

P.S. someday, when WLTV explodes, my original SS will be like the Ty Cobb baseball card.

    QOD:
Amisfield Pinot Gris; Central Otago 2005 unlike any Pinot Gris I ever had
Ugo Leguio Barbaresco; Gallina 1998 this is the real deal
Manzone Barolo; Le Gramolere 1999 stacked and packed
Pesquera; Ribera del Duero 1994 genie in a bottle
Domaine Clavel; La Copa Santa 1998 2x the wine at 1/2 the price

I presently have 185 bottles in my cellar; vintages 1982 to 2004

  • TimF

EileenB — I tend to agree with you that you can over do it on the swishing. Gary really gets into it. I remember tasting a wine like I normally do, pulling air over my tongue. I hated it. My wife (who never spits) said, “Just drink it”. I did and the wine was wonderful. So I think the shwishing may be a little overrated.

    Gary,
I’ve been away and have been catching up on episodes and #99 showed me that cynicism is pervading our society so that when something or someone genuine appears there must be a catch. You make us laugh , you make us ponder, keep up the excellent work. And by the way HAWAIIAN MANGOES ROCK!!!!

Gary V, Any possibility of a per bottle discount for those of us who are willing to pick up?

I know that I can simply have the order shipped for the exact same price. But that costs WL $3 more dollars per bottle. I’d rather pick up, and have the $3 shipping cost that I’m saving WL applied as a per bottle discount. Wouldn’t this be the same difference to WL?

Gary — What are the chances of you guys adding a ‘Wish List’ feature to the site, similar to what’s on Amazon? They probably have 1,000,000 patents on that “feature” though. I seem to remember wine.com having that at one time and now they don’t.

Denise (#62)- It shouldn’t bother you that Gary didn’t give a favorable review to a wine that you enjoy. While I will question some of the things that he says, he’s definitely right on when he says it doesn’t matter what Parker, WS or he think about a wine, it’s YOUR palate that counts (which has been seconded by several postings in previous episodes). And if you’re looking for vindication, Decanter gave it a recommendation and 4 stars.

QOTD – In no particular order:
    Falesco Montiano 2000
Penfolds Bin 707 Cab Sauv 1998
Mollydooker Maitre Dâ?? Cab Sauv 2005
Clarendon Hills Blewitt Springs Vineyards Grenache 2001
    Franciscan Magnificat Meritage 2001

  • SS Chris

TimF, Just for that, you won’t be getting a signed copy of the original SS to auction off on eBay. LOL 🙂

You got me…I was just shading the truth as a set up to my stupid Honus Wagner joke.

On a serious note, the last time GV mentioned it, WLTV was north of 10,000 viewers. (Gary, what the latest on this figure??). I think that WLTV is so compelling, informative and entertaining that the word or mouth gives it the potential to grow dramatically from that number. IMHO

My order is in this morning. A couple Bottles of the 2003 Marquis D’Alesme Becker that I had been eyeing for Months to go with some 2000’s I have. Gary said that he tasted it for me at his “Party” and said that it was solid. I will see what it is like in 5-10. Rest of order is some QPR’s. I may get in trouble with this order as I have another order placed last Friday as well. Oh well – She will have to get over it.. hehe

    Gary-
I did not know LizV is your wife!

    Once again….
What is with the Airborne? Why was it included and where are you flying to?

Tony (#18) – Great question. I’m sure that Gary will address it on the next episode. I agree with Danko in regard to there being so many great wines, so as with you, I tend to buy lots of different wines. But when I find one that is so good that it demands revisiting, I will, cost and availability permitting, buy more. Whenever possible, I will try to taste the wines before purchase, and have been able to decide right away which ones to buy in quantity. In New York, without a lot of restrictions in the # of wines a shop may offer for tasting, that task is easier than in some other states (like NJ).

  • Russ J

Great episode, Gary. Jean Georges? I agree that Madison M is very cute, but tough to beat that, LizV!

Bruce (#97), I opened, and drank, a bottle of the’01 Farina Barolo by mistake (thought it was a similar looking ’93-DUH!) a few months ago and it was really nice, but if you can stand it, I would wait 3-4 more years.

    QOTD:
Seghesio Old Vine Zin ’02-smooth, rich, tremendous.
Chionetti Dolcetto Di Dogliani ’04-super dry, good with food.
Keller Estate Sonoma Pinot ’02-good fruit, good structure, better now than in ’05. Wish I had more.
Nobilo Pinot Gris ’04- Who wanted an interesting Pinot Grigio? This one was funky with a dark gold color unlike any other I have seen/tasted.
Norton Malbec Reserve ’03-solid school night wine.

    GV,
I always decant my red wines for at least an hour. Is it possible to over-decant a wine?
    Thanks,

Gary, I agree wholeheartedly with TimF request for a ‘Wish List’ feature.

Get Sir Brian W and Lord John K on it…STAT!!

Right now, I have a separate tab on my SS that includes what I own along w/ my wish list.

Gary, One more regarding the Wish List’ request. If there is some kind of patent on that, I think I have a possible solution that’s not as good as a Wish List, but better that the current set-up.

Simply allow us to keep items in our CARTS with zero quantity entered. That way we could check out the items we’re ready to buy now, but the “zero’d out” items would remain in our CARTS.

    Sir Brian…Sir Brian…Sir Brian…Sir Brian!!!!!

Hey Yo Gary (in the Rocky voice)

    Great episode!!!

    Top 5 recent wines:

    1) 2003 Edge Cabernet – Great wine for the money
    2) 2004 Christoffel Spatlese* Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling – Not a fan of white wines, but had this at the super tasting and was blown away
    3) 2004 Bonny Doon Muscat de Glacier (dont know about the spelling) – delicious desert wine
    4) 2003 Warre’s port – also had this at the super tasting and you were right on….its AMAZING!
    5) 2004 Castillero del Diablo – Carmenere – Best bottle of wine I’ve ever had under $10.

QOD: Is this free shipping offer your having, one of a kind? Or will you periodically offer free shipping to your faithful, devoted WLTV viewers and more importantly WLTV bloggers???? I can tell you right now, by offering free shipping….its an incentive for people to spend more money, which is better for you.

You probably can overdecant a wine, but it’s really tough to say how much time qualifies as overdecanting. Consider the following from Parker:

“One of the interesting things at Dominus is that when I do my tastings they open and decant the same wines the day before, and the wines with extended aeration always reveal more complexity and sweeter tannin than the just opened bottles, a characteristic purchasers should take into consideration. Decanting several hours in advance is recommended.”

I have on more than one occasion left an unfinished bottle open for a couple of days and found the wine to be so much more enjoyable with the extended breathing time. But you have to be careful with what wines you select to do it.

Julius, thanks for your answer on ‘overdecanting’.

Two more questions that you may have answered peviously:

Also any suggestions for a wine refrigerators?

What do you suggest for storing open wines..VacuVin? Ian Dorin, great guy @ WL gave me a great low-tech suggestion. He had me buy a half bottle w/screw top and he said to use that to store wine because there would be less air than in the full bottle. Seems to be working well…any thoughts?

BTW, the half bottle Ian recommended was excellent, the ’03 Garretson The Craic Syrah…ordered some more full bottles. RP-92

  • Hey Chris……I was in your shoes in May and I did EXTENSIVE RESEARCH on this and bought the Haier 42 bottle model….it actually received excellent reviews from Consumer Reports, it received the best reviews for a unit thats under $700….here’s the one I got:

    http://www.shop.com/op/~Haier_42_Bottle_Premier_Series_Wine_Cooler_(MF_HVF042ABL)-prod-35647773-47323276?sourceid=298

I have had it since the summer time and it works amazing!!! I have an additional scientific thermometer in the cellar to make sure that the temperature is always at the desired level. This fridge maintains the temp perfectly. I HIGHLY reccommend this fridge.

    Hope this helps
