Thanks for the tasting! What good timing… as I am planning on doing a blind tasting at a BYOW function. Should be a lot of fun and thanks for the pointers!

    Gary,
Is it just a coincidence that the wine’s starting number on the table before the bags were applied with the exception of the Viader and the Numanthia which were switched was the final ranking order?

Nice Episode!! I was wondering when you were gonna do a blind tasting. I dispise the Bears because plainly put, they’re just not that good!!!!!! My Dolphins showed you that. It’s a cardboard team, they are sooooooo not for real. Grossman’s a joke at best. Well nuff bout “da bears”. They’ll show us all who they really are soon e-nuff.

GV, great job on the blind tasting. Feel free to do that more often.

QOTD: Having been born and raised in Chicago, I don’t hate the Bears. In fact, a Super Bowl would sit pretty well with me. But if I must answer your question of why I hate them, I would have to list the following roster of sorry QB’s throughout recent history: Vince Evans, Cade McKnown, Kyle Orton, Mike Tomzack, Bob Avellini, Bobby Douglas, Kordel Stewart, Jim Miller, Mike Phipps, Steve Fuller, Rick Mirer, Erik Kramer, et al… When Walter Payton is forced to take a few snaps in a game because no one else could complete a pass, there’s trouble.

As I child I seriously thought the School House Rock where Franklin “made a connection in the other direction and the crowd started shouting out interjections” was written solely about the Bears…

  • The Fog Game against the Eagles. A very painful loss when Randall was playing well and the Eagles Defense seemed amazing that year. Stopped short of a great year on what felt like a fluke.

Great show. Gotta buy some of the O’Shaunnessey.

Why do I hate Da Bears? Many reasons but especially when they call it “Da Bears.” Goofy commercial with a bunch of dumb dumpkins from Chicago. Plus, hate teams that have only a defense. Borrrrrring.

    Happy Turkey Day everyone!

Go Colts! (Even though we lost to “dem Cowboys.”

Awesome episode! QOD answer… I hate the Chicago Bears because they are from Chicago…that should be a good enough reason.

    Gary,
I’m not a conspiracy theorist. I have no questions about your integrity. I just thought that it was ironic. Also, after begging you to do a blind tasting every ?6 episodes, I don’t want to scare you off.
I just re-watched the video and this is what I noticed…

Before bagging the wines sat on the table left to right:

    O’Sh Num Ser Via Buo

After bagging the Bag numbers sat on the table left to right:

    1 5 3 4 2 sat on the table like this

The O’sh(1), Buo(2) & Via(4) table position before bagging and the bag number placed in that table position corresponds to the wine’s finishing rank. The Num(5) & Ser(3) were switched. On my first viewing, I didn’t pick-up their transposition and I thought the Num(5) & Ser(3) corresponded, as well. This made me think that it was a strange coincidence.
Only the Buo(2) and Via(3) sat in their original table position. The Via(3) table position, tasting order, bag number, and finishing rank doesn’t correspond at all. So I have know doubts in the randomness. Not catching the Num(5) & Ser(3) transposition the first time raised my antenae. I should never have suspected the “Sensei”( as Grasshopper calls you). My mistake. I’m sorry.

Also, upon a second veiwing, great comment on the Num being the only 2004 and commenting on how young it was.

I’m really looking forward to the double blind episode. 66 to 131 is 65 episodes. You’re not going to make me wait until episode 196 for the double blind are you?LOL

Great episode. Love the blind tasting concept. The execution was a little questionable, but the general idea worked out great. I would have shuffled the bottles before putting them into the bags though. Like you said double blind would be better, but I don’t know how you would pull that off “on camera”.

    QOTD: Superbowl Shuffle…nuff said.

    QOTD: Because you said so!

Nice episode today. It was nice to see the blind tasting.
The video was a little hot though. I guess you guys are still working on the new camera. Sound was a little better but I still have to crank up my speakers to hear everything you say.

Good job, Gary. The fun of a single blind would have been if you tried to guess what each one was. I know you dropped a few hints, but I was hoping for the full boat!

QOTD: don’t hate them but the Super Bowl Shuffle was annoying as is the “Da Bears” affectation.

My question to you Gary, Was the 1986 Bears the best defense ever? I cant hate the Bears they play good hard football. I can hate Chicago fans, almost as bad as dopey Red Sox fans.

    Gary,
AWESOME episdoe today. Last episode you have a guest, this episode you taste blind. Something tells me the heat episode is on its way. Just kidding, i don’t care about the heat episode (sorry Tony).

For the double blind tasting, why don’t you do the blindfold thing and have staff memebers bring in and bag the wines. I know you are worried about us thinking you lied, but even today your assistant could have put the numbers on your tasting notes sheet. I know that didn’t happen, but I am just saying the process requires some level of trust. If you say it is double blind, there is not much more you can do to ensure out trust.

On second thought, maybe you don’t want staff members picking out the wines after the white zinfandel debacle.

QOD: I hate the bears because of bears fans.

Nothing wrong with the Bears; it’s just the BEARS FANS seem to come out of the woodwork because of the good season. Wait, that’s pretty much every team. . . .

I made it a point not to watch which bottle went into which bag so that I could see if I could figure out, based on your descriptions, what bags held the three wines I have had (Numanthia, O’Shaughnessy, Viader). I was able to, and I agree that the O’Shaughnessy is an outstanding wine. In fact, I would like to also try the Mt. Veeder cuvee, but it’s a little too expensive ($165-175).
