EP 161 Petite Sirah Wines After a Big Loss

Wines tasted in this episode:

Petite Sirah is it the same as Syrah? Is Petite Sirah bigger or smaller then Syrah? Is Petite Sirah the same as Durif? All these questions and more will be answered by a sad Gary Vaynerchuk.

Just came back from Napa and tried some great Petite Sirahs, have had some over the yrs but maybe only a couple times a year, now I will seek them out more, not had these Gary drank yet. QOTD-too broad a questions, depends on what caused the sadness..Jets losing which caused you to shave would be a Cab. http://www.winelx.com

Hang in there, Gary! Thanks for toughin’ out an episode today…

Take solace in the fact that the Jets delivered much more than any of us thought they would during the regular season and are a team on a rise. It’s painful right now, but after they add a RB and some depth on defense, we’ll be looking for a big 2007-2008 season!

“Always look on the bright side of life…”

Wow Gary…I’m surprised that you even did a show today. Some words come to mind: morose, sullen, austere, melancholy. Though not a Jets fan, I feel for you and other disheartened fans today. Saying it was a good run just doesn’t seem to provide much comfort at this point.

When I’m sad, a nice Rhone blend proves to be a good, comforting friend.

    Hang in there buddy!

I think a five star cognac is probably your best bet. Thank goddness half the green teams won-I’m still smiling.

Dude, please tell me that was at least partly an act. I’m a little worried about you if you are really taking the loss that badly. It’s funny, though, because this is what the early shows were like. In those early shows, you didn’t do the shouting and the funny antics. Were you always sad back then?

QOTD: When I’m sad, I like to do Jello shots. There’s always room for Jello, no matter how sad you are!

  • Shotgun

Gary I almost want to cry for you… shames me to think that I said all those nasty things about The Beard (which WAS horrible) and the pathetic little tasting glass that you pulled out last week (it WAS dorky). And I am glad to see that both are gone.

The Quixote Petite Sirah is a very nice wine. The winery itself is a work of art, designed by the Austrian architect Hundertwasser. Vayniacs should check out the Quixote website and the photos of the place. I think there was something in the architect’s contract that the winery could not accept visitors until X years after his death (go figure), and I think Quixote will start accepting visitors this year.

Wine to drink when sad? An inexpensive young Chianti– a sundrenched and happy wine– with simple Tuscan fare like tagliatelle with some olive oil and shaved parmesan.

Wow, hopefully you cheer up this week because this episode was definitely a Vayner-PAZZZZZZZZZZZ in itself.

QOD – Does Jim Beam count?

    Gary Somberchuk is back!

Sorry about the Jets loss. I don’t want to repeat all the silver linings. It sucks that their run is over.

QOD: The wine cure for sadness= Finger Lakes rieslings for me. They put me in a good place and make me feel all happy.

When I’m sad I drink gin and tonics and lots of them. If I’m out of tonic water I drink nice WA cab. Love the Abeja, Owen Roe, Woodward Canyon. If that’s not enough I’ll even reach for St. Michelle if I have to. It’s the wine equivalent of wrapping myself up in a big wool blanket on the couch.

  • Italian Stallion

    HEy buddy,

Sorry about the JETS loss…..You should have kept the beard going anyway.

QOD: When someone is sad…the best drink is Hemlock..lol

QOD: When sad, no wine, Tequila, cause Tequila makes everything better. Key is to not stop drinking till you don’t remember or don’t care.

Lurker Alert – Don’t shoot, I’m coming out!!

Gary – I’ve been trying to catch up on all the past episodes so I could jump into the mix and say something clever for my first post, but with 60 episodes to go and the Jets out for the season, I figured it was time to make an appearance. A little something to cheer you up on this dark day.

Great episode, love the funereal air, way to tough it out. I spent Sunday evening wondering what was in store on WLTV come Monday (if anything). Regarding the QOD – I think something dark and brooding is appropriate. Screw the Champagne, bust out the 1977 Taylor’s or a ’94 Cali Cab. Wallow in the dark cherries, bitter chocolate, and ground-up worm heads. Plenty of time for froo-froo-happy wine later. Right now is the time for self-pity. It’s your time, Gary. Yours and the Jets’. Live it.

I’ll get cracking on my WLTV video introduction.

disappointed GV.. I come back after a week and this is the enthusiasm I get?! I want you to know that I was a walking advert for WLTV on my trip. A few people actually asked me about the show and wrote down the site address.. hey those t-shirts work!

sorry about the Jets loss, but I can see through sullen GV, the old energetic GV is still there underneath. On the brighter side, think about what was accomplished this year. The real question I have is.. what team are you going to root for now? I’d say go for the pats so you can say you that lost to the champs!

glad to be back regardless.. 😉

Gary, thanks for showing up today. I assume you will be back, full of piss and vinegar soon. All I can say about what wine to drink is to treat yourself. When I’m alone and feeling down, I head down to the cellar. If something great cathes my eye, I say to myself, “I deserve that wine, darn it, and people like me.”

    hugs

I was moved by your effort today. Great sadness, painful to watch. I feel for you, man.
I use a tasting glass all the time, one from La Derniere Goutte, a wonderful little wine store in Paris down the rue Dauphine, in the quartier Saint Germain. Beautifully etched little glass.
    Love Petite Sirah.
When I’m sad I turn to Champagne. Well, I drink Champagne at any and all times and moods. My favorite wine experience. But it is especially good when I’m down. To your health and that of your family.

Shitty deal about the jets…cant be upset about the season though.

Never really thought about Petit Sirah. I’m glad you cleared up with a Petit Sirah really is. I thought it was an early picked Sirah grape wine. Definitely will have to try these.

QOD: No wine. Either Jack Daniels, Margarita or bourbon.

Pull yourself together, man. At least the Jets have a Superbowl to their name. My Saints? Well, do I have to go there? This is the first time we’ve ever even had a BYE! One playoff win the HISTORY of the Saints. Look at the bright side, y’all got a higher draft pick now. Never know. Might have a “Reggie Bush” fall to the Jets like we did.

THANKS HOUSTON TEXANS! SAINTS LOVE YOU! Oh, yea, SO DO THE TITANS!

Gary – As a Redskins fan, I feel your pain. Always.

  • Mets fan 13

Sorry about the Jets . . . I feel your pain. Bright future though.

After the Mets lost game 7 of the ’06 NLCS, we opened a bottle of Vall Llach, one our favorites, to try to numb the pain. It didn’t change the results of the game but it did make us feel better.

Invite us all down for a party. We’ll all make you forget about the game.
