I like a big red with Skyline Chili (plate of spaghetti, Cincinnati chili, onions, topped off with a mound of shredded cheddar cheese and nice splash of tabasco).

Following a recent wine and cheese episode, I was going to ask what pairing you’d recommend for bratwurst (in a bun) with ketchup, mustard, cooked onions, and sauerkraut? The other comments here suggest a shiraz.

    hey G,
You’re doing a great job w/the blog. Many friends are now vayniak.

I like sourdough pretzels dipped in mustard. If your eyes were closed you wold think you were eating a ham sandwich. It’s incredible, I encourage everyone to try it sometime. For my tastes, a boujolais ,old world burgundan or oregonian Pinot does the trick.

I worked for a pharmicutical company and up till about 10-15 years a go they made a product similar to GERITOL (basically cheap sherry wine fortified with vitamins). When we would go into production of the TONIC we would get a delivery from Kendem Wines of upstate NY of about 3000 gallons of sherry. Needless to say some would always get “skimed” off and find its way with us to lunch with bad company cafeteria meatloaf and instant mashed potatos a pairing beyond belief.

A nice Cab and Chinese Food always does it for me. There are several other red wines you can insert that will work too Rioja for example. Plain hot dogs suck!! Red onions and mustard is how I do.

  • Sauerkraut and Mustard. I knew you were closet Vikings fan! Go Vikes.

Great ep. Neat to see how food can “improve” a wine and how it can destroy it.

Something else from the dissolute past – tikka makhni and Bulgarian cab, which was about all I could afford @ the time. Well, it seemed like a good idea anyway.

And I don’t have a link, but Pepiere Clos des Briords = a great muscadet. The ocean in a bottle.

And what’s this “Paris Hilton of the wine world” stuff? No, no, no, no and no.

Kevin Seal. Come on, you know you miss Kevin Seal.

What else is soooo wierd is that I sat down to watch the game today and decanted a 2000 Ch. Tauzinat l’ Hermitage St Emilion Grand Cru for “3 to 4 hrs”…then my little boy woke up from a lazy Sat afternoon nap and wanted a hot dog for lunch. Yes, I also had mustard and kraut on my dogs and my glass of Boreaux. Then, I tuned in yesterday’s vlog to find you paring Bordeaux and hot dogs!! Wierd! But delicious!

A hot dog? Bordeaux and a hotdog? (in Chris Rock voice)!

Actually it sounds pretty good to me. Next time put some cheese on top and nuke it. That would be awesome!
    Friday is the best!

    QOTD:

    Red wine with roasted almonds

    Chinon with black cured olives

    Gary,

Kool episode. Hotdogs are OK, but I would of preferred it with a Choucroute Garnie (a sauerkraut, pork, and sausage casserole,(the real hotdog version)) from the Alsace Lorraine region (with real juniper berries.)

No I’m not a food snob.

Call me from another planet, but I’ve been known to eat a hearty steak with a Sauv. Blanc.

You nailed it. In a lot of places, you cruise for burgers. In Chicago, we cruise for dogs and you described the classic. I had one today at Huey’s on Balmoral.

Don’t know about others out there but I prefer my wine all by itself. For me, food so drastically changes the experience -not in a good way- that I have learned how to imbibe before and then again after I eat. Just so much more enjoyable…>-

Great show Gary. I just watched it on my big screen TV in Dolby 5.1 surround. The paper ball hitting the camera made the room shake, and the “slurpy sounding” wine tasting sounded like a raging river. I’d highly recommend listening to Gary’s show in this manner… You think his show is good NOW, listen to it cranked up!!!! Rock ON Gary!!!!!!!!
