Impressive for the wine to hold up…QOTD-long time ago, maybe being a 90 day wonder in Mgmt Trainee program in the Banking business and becoming a Asst Bank Manager…glad I am out of that business… http://www.winelx.com

  • #2 is So Lame

You better be watching this TONY!!!!!

I don’t know if it’s the greatest EVER…but it’s definitely the most interesting bottle!

I think your calling yourself the Iron Man for doing so many shows in a row!

QOTD…I’ll answer for Stallion…Eye of the Tiger is the #2 Song of the YEAR!
Mine = 1982 Seemed so great and maybe it was becasue I was seven years old but things seemed so promising. I liked Ronald Reagan becasue it was the first president I remember.
The Best…Michael Jackson’s Thriller is released and I didn’t know anyone who wasn’t into that album! AWESOME

Your PURPLE TEETH suggest a LOOOOOONG day of tasting!

    VERY cool episode. Loved it.

QOD: 1982 is my birthyear, so that is my favorite thing from 1982.

QOTD: Olivia Newton John’s “Physical” is *finally knocked off from it’s many weeks at #1 only to be replaced by…Hall and Oates. God wasn’t music amazing back then!

Oh, and ditto Kahuna’s comment #4.

  • Nice Gary. reminds me of a blind tasting some Dutch sommeliers did a few weeks ago: a batch of wines properly cellared for some years, the same batch of wines not at all properly cellared a carried along for about a year in the boot of some salesman’s car (that must have been darn tough for that guy, jeesh). Tasted them blind: know what? Of course there was no clear cut difference between both groups, but the one unanimously chosen best wine of the whole lot was one that went through that ‘horrible’ car boot experience. Funny thing …
QOTD: 1982? Or it must have been the year when I managed to say ‘mama, daddy’ for the first time in my life or it’s Ozzy Osbourne biting off the head of a live bat in a show (gotta see that, hilarious) or just the invention of the CD … Boring if you’d ask me.

  • QOTD-I was in 4th grade in 1982, so my best memory would be, dodgeball?

Thanks for taping all the shows. You are the HARDEST WORKING MAN IN THE WINE BIZ!!!!

  • I recently drank a 1970 Cheval Blanc that was given to me. It spent its first 19 years in an attic. Now, I live in Ireland so the variation in temperature would not be as great as anywher ein the USA, but 19 years? This wine got its ass kicked. After that, it was kept in a cupboard which was basically a liquor cabinet. I was very skeptical about how this would taste. The capsule seemed to have a bit of rust(?) on it and the outside of the cork was very mouldy. Therewere “lines” of wine htat went straight through the cork and the ullage was around the base of the neck. When I opened it, the bottom 1/4 of the cork crumbled and fell into the wine.

The aromas were definately “barnyard” and “animal.” There was a thick rust-coloured ring around the edge of the wine as I held it in the glass. It felt quite silky in the mouth. Much of the fruit had melted away as had the tannins (loads of sediment) and it really felt like a burgundy in my mouth.

This wine, having had its ass kicked hard for so long really impressed me. To me, it was equally as good as the 1997 Chateau Tertre d’Auguay (St Emil – G Cru Classe) that we used to sell in our shop for รข?ยฌ35 (around $45). Now, many people would have been dissappointed by that, but I really figured this wine to have only about a 1% (if that) chance of being anything but vinaigre!

Since that was my only time having a Cheval Blanc AND my only experience with 1970, I relly don’t have a point of reference – anyone out there had either???

    Very Cool episode, btw!!!

1982 – not a good year for me. I started high school that year, 4 of the worst years of my life. Fortunately, it got much, much better after that.

    Humm – I was 8..

Best thing from 1982 would have to be the Pichon Long. that we drank a couple years back on X-Mas with Prime Rib

1982.. one of the best years for sci-fi movies EVAR!!

Tron and Blade Runner both released that year. I was 6 for most of the year, november babies get shafted, but I do remember a friend’s birthday party where we watched Tron and another childhood favorite: Time Bandits, on video. Life-changing experience that was… ๐Ÿ˜€

Can’t wait to get another “live” episode GV. What do you have in store for us after this weekend?

  • this was fun to watch!

I am intrigued by older wines and have never experienced anything more than 8 years old. It is good to know how hearty wine is…

QOTD – i wasn’t born yet in 82….. sorry there!

    On another note….
I did a little test the other night and combined some things from a few recent episodes. I went and got a bottle of the Wolf Trap 2005 and decanted it for four hours (my first time decanting – it always intimidated me). Then i went out and picked up a McDonalds double cheeseburger and a crispy chicken sandwich (i’m not a fan of the 7-11 hot dogs =(. sorry Gary!). When my french friend saw me take a bite of the burger and then drink the wine she just about had a heart attack! Just the look on her face was worth it! Well…. i enjoyed the Wolf Trap quite a bit on it’s own and it went extremely well with the cheeseburger (especially when i hit the pickle, cause McDonalds only puts one pickle on those). However it butted heads bigtime with the chicken sandwich. I’m not sure if it was the mayo or the spiciness of the chicken, but it transformed the wine into this bitter dry gritty thing. The experiment was great fun!

Have any wine recommendations for a McDonalds chicken sandwich (the $1 one)?

    Fly safe!

  • Awesome Episode… very informative.

Gary — Very interesting ep. However, does NOT mean your off the hook for the heat episode.

Kahuna — Possibly the best QOTD answer EVER!!!!

QOTD: 1982 – First (of MANY) Who farewell tours! Now it’s 2007, and they’re still touring. Daltry is now 62.

Also, in 82, release of Rush’s Signals. Sure it would have been better if it had been a 80 or 81 wine so I could talk about Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, or Exit… Stage Left, but I’ll use this to sneak is a plug for my favorite band…
