Best description of wine yet– by far — i have ever heard: “Nice pipe, firm handshake.”

I love it. BTW, the wife just shook her head and frowned as she saw me with my bottle, glass and english cheddar chuckling at the internet…

I Think you found the solution of showing wine color. The large glass showed the color excellent when swirled; even with a dark background. For your high Cholesterol; take one 1000mg fish oil supliment daily. Buy them at WalMart. You could definately see the color difference; especially in the large glass.

    Gary,
Nice show. Another new wine for me to try. Had a shiraz this week at a wine bar, Jacob’s Creek, I think. Sucked. Came home and cracked the Dutschke God’s Hill Road: nirvana. Will have to try the 2005 you had on today. Sounds interesting.
On another topic, had a 2003 Zenato Ripassa Valpolicella with my Rigatoni with homemade gravy (if you cook sauce with meat, it’s gray). Wow, what a fab wine for Italian food.

  • The Raging Platypus

Ah Gary, I still remember my younger days, watching Knicks games with my dad and two younger brothers….I MISS those teams, man. So much that when you were holding that Oak-Monster contest, I was debating whether or not I should send in a picture of Charles Oakley clubbing a Chicago Bulls icon with a bottle of wine. One of the saddest things in my young sports life was watching Ewing in his later years stumbling into awkward turnaround jumpshots on those creaky knees. *wipes away a tear* I miss the guy, and like you said, he’s totally unappreciated.

QOTD: Geez, my parents had this odd bottle of wine called “Viking Red” sitting in their cabinet, so I decided to give it a shot. TERRIBLE. The nose smelled like rotten cherries, and it tasted like moldy plums covered in reprocessed sugar. On the other hand, it really helped my palate identify that whole “using sugar to cover up bad wine” thing, so I can’t complain.

The worst wine I’ve had this week, unfortunately, was the ’04 Pillar Box Red. My tasting note: Pure green pepper juice with a hint of prune. Now, I have to admit: It was opened the night before, one glass consumed (by flaca who liked it a lot), then re-capped (screwcap) and put in the fridge at 34 deg, then taken out the next evening and brought to room temp, when it was green-pepper city. Today (day 3) some of the pepper has blown off, replaced with jalapeno, which isnt so bad.

GV- thanks!!!! for OIWM!!! I’m excited! don’t forget nerello mascalcese (try Tenuta delle Terre Nere), vermentino, negroamaro, piedirosso, aglianico del vulture, ruche, trebbiano, malvasia, magliocco, nerello, greco di tufo… so much fun…

thanks for helping to expand our palates

Hi Gary – thanks for reading my question! Looking forward to the OIW episodes!

Way back in 1985, two friends and I took a bus to NYC to see the Knicks play the 76ers in the first regular season game for 1985-1986. We sat in the absolutely worst seats in the Garden – last row, upper deck, behind the basket. But we were witnesses not only to Patrick Ewing’s first regular season game as a Knick, but if I recall correctly, it was also Charles Barkley’s (if not, then it was his 2nd season). Oh wow, I feel very old all of a sudden!

Worst wine this week – Kendall-Jackson Sonoma Chardonnay. Oh yuck, what a mistake…

    Oh, and QOD…I have two:

Chateau Elan NV Chardonnay..From GEORGIA of all places…Tasted and smelled like the cask room of a winery where all the spilled wine has time to sit on the concrete floor in summer for a good 3, maybe 4 years…

But the worst – Johnson Estate NV Port from Finger Lakes region…smelled like a 5 month old baby’s $h!T, and that comes from someone who, with a five month old baby, is very familiar with that smell…

Gary, if you want to try it, I have the bottle (missing one small glass) and can bring it down to the store for you…Just let me know!

Great to see Cabernet Franc from the Loire getting some attention. Haven’t had the 2005 Mabileau yet, but I’m a big fan of the 2004. IMO, it has more red fruit to balance the earthiness and vegetal notes than Gary described and its incredibly versatile with food. The Breton Bourgeuil is also a worthy example of the appellation.

Lucky me hasn’t had any bad wine this week. Coincidentally, the only bottle I consumed this week was a bottle of the 2004 Mabileau.

    Gary,

Patrick Ewing was billed as great, but never got beyond good. And when it counted–really counted, playoff time, crunch time–did not come through. Tons of press coverage, all-star appearances, listed as one of the top players of all time, and you say that he was unappreciated?!? He was totally overrated. In fact, the QTD should have been, what’s the most overrated wine you’ve ever had?

That said, I suffered a Frontera Cab-Merlot earlier this week.

Man, Gary, next you’ll be telling us that Dale Berra was unappreciated….

Haven’t had a bad wine this week.
Gary, you can make anchovies and green peppers and pickle juice in wine sound appealing!! How do you do that???
Hey, you really need to do an episode on wines from the “other” states. (That should include Idaho).

While you were talking about “cooking” wine, I wish you had also talked about freezing wine. I’ve mail ordered some wine in the last few weeks, and I was worried about the cold temps.

QOTD: I’ve had NO bad wine this week. Early in the week, I opened a 1999 Château Quinault L’Enclos. It was challenging, but once it settled down and I got into it, it was awesome. Mid-week I opened a 2003 Bodegas Castaño Yecla Solanera, my favorite go-to everyday wine. I had no disappointments.

There really were 2 QOTD today – what kind of wine are you, and then of course, worst of the week. My biggest disappointments of the week were: 1. Don Ventura Vina Caniero Mencia 2005 from Ribeira Sacra, Spain. I’ve really enjoyed mencia from bierzo the last few years and been psyched to see it gain popularity but lately i’ve been finding that the new, lower end versions trying to capitalize are really letting me down. Had that by the glass at BLTSteak in NYC. Then tonite went to spain again for Llopart Rose Brut Reserva (from WL). Had great color and a decent nose but nothing to back it up. On the palette there was little substance and certainly no finish to speak of. Not an expensive wine but still hoped for a bit more. Have a great weekend.

QOTD: Pepperwood Grove Pinot Noir 2005. I asked my 9 year old to tell me what it smelled like and she said, “an old wet towel used to clean up spilled grape juice.” She hit the nail right on the head! Kids are great for picking the nose. (No pun intended) 😀

QOTD: Easy. 2005 Windy Peaks Chardonnay Colorado. CO has a long way to go if they want to produce World class wine. After a sip, we used it to clean out our drain.

I’ll back up the suggestion for obscure Italian varietals as well. Please don’t exclude grapes like Passarina, Bonarda, Cannonau (Sardegna’s version of Grenache), etc.! While your at it, see if you can find a Zibippo in the form of a Passito di Pantelleria. Minardi is a great producer for that wine.

  • QOTD: Alright… I opened a bottle of Firestone Syrah 2004, truthfully expecting it to be the worst wine I’ve had all week… (probably just because I don’t care for Syrah) but suprisingly, I’m actually having a second glass. (Maybe I just have retarded taste buds?)

    My question to you:
Is it bad for me to use a pump to suck the air out of my wine bottle repeatedly through the course of one evening? (I know I should just leave the bottle open to breath… but I’m just curious if having the bottle emptied of air and then blasted with air over and over jacks things up?)

Loving all the new info I’m learning!!!

    Gary-
    Fabulous episode!
How did you know that I loved
    Captain Kangaroo as a child?
My fav show on TV as a child!
QOD: I think of myself as a good – well-aged-
    champagne!
    Love the low priced wines!
    WOW!
    🙂

  • QOTD – 05 Zaca Mesa Viognier. It was too hot. Per your suggestion, I’m trying Viognier, and so far my favorite one is the $9.99 05 de Pennautier, which is very balanced and complex. The Victor Hugo is okay. I will be drinking d’Arenberg The Hermit Crab (Viognier/Marsanne blend) next.

QOTD: Marquis Phillips Shiraz. The host hasn’t gotten the word that the Oak Monster is to be rejected.

For Cholesterol – just go on Lipitor. It is so easy. One pill. Will knock off 100 points. I went from 269 to 170. Now I eat Steak, butter, lamb – – everything. Why suffer? You can have it all, with great health
