YES!! I just drank the 01 Rotllan Torra Reserva last week (during the Valentine’s Day storm, in fact, while you were athletically catching airborne wineglasses) and I also scored it 89 points. Of course I did not open it for 16 hours first. Definitely chocolate, root beer and cola on the nose, but also maraschino cherries, maybe they had evaprated by the time you drank it. I also think it’s a good value and I’m getting MORE. I also tasted the 00 Tirant at a store, very nice but pricey and young…for a drinkable and affordable wine NOW, the 01 reserva is great.
P.S. Is a Ribera del Duero episode coming up next? 02 Prado Rey Crianza is pretty awesome for $15ish…and 02 Fontal Crianza from La Mancha is an even more amazing value at $7ish. I haven’t found 02 to be a disaster outside Rioja.

    G,
Been waiting for this one. Back to old form with the “serious,” educational style. Nice. Really looking to get into this region, seems, from what I’ve read, very artisanally focused. Thanks bro.

Thank you! Thank you for the Priorat episode! I have a 1998 Rotllan Torra Gran Reserva (not just “plain” Reserva) smuggled directly from Spain waiting in my cellar. It’s probably about time to open it!

It’s funny that you say that is fun to see that Carignan and Grenache are doing so well in the region. Well that’s because they are native from the NE area in Spain where they are called Cariñena and Garnacha. Other French varietals have been added recently in Priorat. But the real gems are those old vine Garnacha and Cariñena on poor schist (licorella in Catalán) soils. It’s really interesting how so many of the the Southern Rhone grapes are shared across the Spanish-French border.

Speaking of a shared grape, how about some Monastrells/Mouvedres from Jumilla next?

Having never heard of Priorat before, I am humbly acknowledging the enormous amount of information I am able to glean from the wisdom of WLTV. I’m going to add this to my growing list of “things I learned from Gary Vaynerchuck” which right now takes up an entire excel worksheet.
Thanks! We appreciate the pre-taped episodes, though we love you in ‘real-life’ too!

QOTD: Orange. What’s up with all you leprechauns?

Life was much simpler when it was just Chards and Cabs!

Thanks again Mr. Vay-Ner-Smurf for introducing me to something new.
I love when you get chocolate in a wine, it smoothes it out nicely.
I shall seek out the Roltan Torra.

Also, very big of you to agree with another reviewers rating…
it doesn’t happen too often in La Monde du Vin (I think that means “the wine world”)

    QOTD: Battleship Grey

Neil (comment#38), Brilliant Monty Python reference!

    Ha. Smurfs.

I’ll be asking for priorat around town. Now I can say “Priorat is the Tuscany of Spain” – and sound like I know something.

Mauve, green, greys – or anything heathered.

Thanks for another introduction on a new wine. It’s on my list to try. I don’t think the Smurfs get out enough. They probably live in a non-wine shipping state.
QOTD: Like Gary describes his wines, you can’t just say blue, red or green. You have to describe the color like Dmjperc (COMMENT 39- Tin Man’s Johnson Silver). You see, everyone knows what color that is, right?!? Mine is candy apple red, the color of my Caddilac.

nice episode but I believe you are overrating priorat… they are undoubtedly doing interesting things, with a nerw world flair, but the classic DOCs of Rioja and Ribera del Duero are still a class ahead of priorat. Sorry G, have to disgree with you on this one.
