    Great show GV!
QOTD: I’m having lunch out with friends this weekend… not sure what’ll be on the list, but it’s sure to be extremely limited. We’ll be sure to pop open something, though.:)

Interesting episode. I was surprised there was so little difference in the four wines. Like geespot ( comment 47), I have to work through the week-end (swing shifts at a 911 dispatch center), so I’m on my ‘week-end’ right now. I already opened a very fine bottle of Tokaji (2000 Disznoko 6 puttonyos) after watching last nights episode. I’ll see if there is much change in it tonight, as there is still plenty left in the bottle in the fridge.

Wow, Deep touching Blog Gary. Nice job. This weekend, I will give thanks and open something nice. Thanks for the demand. My friends will benefit from it. : )

    Great episode.

QOTD: I let wine sit too long. I use to buy Ch. St. Jean Cinq Cepage before it hit the WS WOTY. I still have a couple of 1994’s and will open one of them and I might open a Caymus 1994 to compare it to.

Okay, nice episode. Especially liked the zoom in on each bottle.

QOTD: Mollydooker 2005 The Boxer Shiraz – was a nice gift and your request is a perfectly good excuse to open it!

Cool episode – nice idea. I wonder how that first bottle would taste tomorrow?

QOTD: Nice idea – going to see family and in-laws this weekend – I’ll be opening a ’97 Antinori Pian delle Vigne BdM, and a ’00 Niebaum-Coppola Rubicon. For backup, I’ll bring a ’97 Silvio Grasso Barolo Ciabot Manzoni. That should make Pops very happy.

  • It would be cool if you keep trying that first bottle for the next few days. Maybe friday you can have it with a little oil on a salad.

Nice episode. I’ve always wondered how much of a difference decanting vs. opening the bottle early vs. pop-and-pour really makes. I guess the answer might be “a lot less than people think.” I know I was a little surprised at this result myself, as I was expecting some pretty huge differences–and I know everyone’s had quite a few wines that have changed like it’s nobody’s business after opening. Obviously it depends on the wine you’re drinking, but still a very interesting experiment. Hope to see more of these in the future.

Also, I’d like to add, these “experiment” episodes are my absolute favorites! Keep ’em coming!

Great QOTD: I was recently married over here in Japan and haven’t been able to get back to Nor Cal since then. So, I’ve got some wine waiting for me at home that I’m going to enjoy this weekend. I’m not sure of the vintage but gonna enjoy some Opus One (first time trying it). Mad props to what you said, “wine is meant to be drunk”. I think this is something that wine “experts/afficianados/etc.” get in the habit of NOT doing. I’ve heard people tell me about what they have in their cellar or what they have locked away “for that special occasion” but what they forget is that every moment of life is amazing and it is the atmosphere of an event or day that makes it special. So, if you open a special bottle with special people you’ve just completed the formula to have a “special day”. Cheers then to having as many special days in your life as possible, everyone.

Good to know that a day on the counter can make it better. I tend to use the Nitrogen spray to preserve, but maybe I don’t need it. It was a little redundant today, maybe a different wine that will show more differences would work better.

QOTD: It’s my birthday this weekend and we’re eating at a nice french place. I will look for a great Chateauneuf Du Pape

    For Crying Out Loud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Should we pass the hat so you could afford more than one glass to taste out of on occasions like this????????????????????????

I’m heading North for the weekend and my Brothers Birthday. We will be doing brats and bonfire with several, well chilled Bavarian Helles Lagers that he and I brewed up a few months ago. I’ll save the wine for another time. Prost!

    Sensei,

Very cool episode and also think it is great that you are a person who knows what is important and that IS family and freinds. Somehow this world has to become less violent as I fear we have all become so numb. Yes we will grieve, but many will forget and not do anything to make a change! Your sedimant on living life to the fullest is so true and I will take your advice on drinking a great bottle this weekend. I do not have any really old bottles yet and may not because of guys like you giving me the little nudge I need to “pop” them…:) But I think I will choose on the the three 2001 Casanova di Neri Brunello’s my Sweatheart bought me for Valentines day. Will give me a good point of reference as i try and age the other two…

This episode really was a great idea and addresses two questions that I am sure most of us have asked or talked about. And that is how long to decant and how to store overnight….your results were very interesting and I hope you do try this again with some other wines…

Speaking of Smacks….a great Vaynersim is that snapping noise you make when you smack your mouth after you feel that “tingy-tangy” thing…:)

I really look forward to drinking some wine with new friends on Friday night. It will be great to meet some of my fellow Vayniacs and be in the presence of the Master himself….Because YOU are making a difference in the world, not just the wine world!

QOTD: 2004 Torbreck “The Struie.” I hope it is really big and exuberant. Of course, we’ll decant it!

I wondered if this episode would be similar to What Does Decanting Do? (Episode 18). As others have said, differenes really do seem to depend on the wine in question.

Have fun in Chicago! Wish I could drive up from Indy… 🙁

QOTD: To celebrate our son’s recent acceptance to his favorite college, my wife and I will be sharing a Pierre Morlet Grand Reserve we picked up at WL.

Come to think of it, hey Gary, how about another “growers” Champagne episode?

Thanks for a HUGE shout-out GV! But I think we all know that your job is safely in your hands.

Dom – one golden lock coming your way!

QOTD: I can’t do it this weekend because I am preparing for my last two weeks of law school which is 4 exams. But, on May 3rd at 5:00pm after my last exam (and last day of school forever) I will pop the 1999 Pierre Morlet Champagne.

QOTD: If I get a chance, I will probably open a 2001 Concha y Toro Don Melchor Cabernet and a 2003 Thorn Clarke Shotfire Ridge Shiraz.

As a side note, since you linked steve’s video (which I had already seen), I noticed now that it has a 3 star rating, though you seem to agree this is a fantastic video. The voting system seems to be totally flawed. I hope you are able to ‘adjust’ the rules in case videos such as this or those by Tim F, my other favorite, don’t make it to the top three through open voting.

Nice Ep, GV. How about repeating the experiment next time with zin since that grape, perhaps more than any other, sadly gets a (deserved?) bad rap for longevity? Just to be fair, no field blends like the wonderful Ridge wines.

QOTD. I wish I knew. However, GV’sright: life’s too short for bad wine.

Permit me to ask others another question: For those longtimers who read WineSpectator, are your 1996 cab’s as bad as the mag suggests in a recent article??? I’ve been pretty happy with the ones I’ve opened over the last year, including Cinq Cepage, Artist Series, and even some cheapies like Estancia meritage. Any thoughts? Just hoping….

    Lovely episode Gary!
QOTD – It’s my 30th birthday on May 2nd and my wife and friends are taking me out to my favorite restaurant so I will be popping a 2002 Pierro Chardonnay from Margaret River (special bottle, bought at the winery), a 1982 Cantenac Brown, and to finish it off, we’ll drink a birthyear 1977 Fonseca Vintage Port. (that bottle was for you originally for after I wupped you in bball but I gotta crack it as it sounds like you are chickening out).
It will be a great night and thanks for pushing me. I was thinking about saving the 82 and drinking something else. THanks Gary! 🙂

    Good idea for a show,
If you do this again, I would like to see what would happen to a young bordeaux, or even better a old world wine that is a great wine, but not showing well at this point in time, I have a hard time dealing with a quality wine that is excellent the first bottle I open, the second about 18 months later, the cork pops, but the wine doesn’t show up, then the 3rd bottle is opened 5 years later is the best yet. I pay for three premium bottles, but only enjoy two.If this was an investment, I would have to say the return is poor.
QOTD… I will be alone, so a great bottle will not be opened, But because You DEMANDED, and the fact that the weather should be wonderful for grilling a nice steak I think that I might open a Novelty Hill Columbia Valley Cabernet 2003.
