EP 219 4 Ways to Try 1 Wine With Gary Vaynerchuk

Wines tasted in this episode:

  • Joe In LA

GREAT idea! This was, for me, very very interesting. Seems that some wines are much more delicate. Hard to picture a Sangiovese wine sitting 24 hrs and not changing for the poorer.

    Thanks.

QOD — probably something German, as I’m going to a fantastic German restaurant, Stammtisch, out here in Monterey.

  • Autumnfox

I loved this episode! Just so happens I am drinking the end of a meritage that was opened last night and not vacuumed. It definitely is what I would call rounder(less jagged). Yum yum in my tum tum.

QOTD: I have no more special wines to open…I drank them all! I will find something I am sure.

  • QOTD: This weekend I am going to a wine club tasting get together at a Thai restaurant. These people want the theme to be… Chardonnay and Viognier! With Thai! Ugh. So the special wine that I will be taking will be… a 2005 Hugel “Viognier” from Traminer 😉 😉

QOTD: I likely won’t be drinking any wine. I see gallons of vodka,Red Bull, shots, and pints of beer in my future. I am going to a 24 hour bachelorette party this weekend. I have NOT been priming my liver at all this week and I hope to make through to Sunday alive.

This experiment would have had a lot more credibility had it been done blind.

  • Great episode Gary, I often take 2 days to finish off a bottle of wine. Sometimes they change a lot- sometimes very little. Glad to hear you voice this though, as sometimes I wonder if I am on target.
QOTD: I will be in the Finger Lakes this Sunday touring wineries on the eastside of Seneca Lake- so that’ll be the equivalent of a “special bottle” for me.

    Excellent Episode….Like a 2001 Bordeaux, I think this could be a sleeper.
Next time how about inlcuding a bottle that has been vacuum pumped overnight !

QOTD: I haven’t had my small collection long enough to pull the trigger on the few gems, but I’ll make sure it’s something I really like.

Fun show, I want to go to Chi-town so bad. When and were is the next Midwest party? Cleveland? Indy? Columbus? Pitt? Cincy? Ann Arbor? Detroit?

QOTD – Sunday I am going mushroom hunting (Morels) if I get some I’m going to cook them up and drink a 1996 J Vineyards Pinot Noir. I know its not the best bottle but I’ve held on to it a long time and it reminds me of the first trip I ever took to the Russian River Valley.

Now THAT was a fun episode, Gary. Thanks! A friend of mine has been to South Africa many times and goes there about once a year and he has recommended the Kanonkop Pinotage as well. Now I will have to seek it out.

QOTD: Last weekend we opened some great wine. Sunday night a friend of mine from Colorado was in town and he definitely appreciates good wine. So at dinner we had a bottle of 1986 Chateau Montrose. For dessert, we had a 1977 Barros Colheito Porto. It was a fantastic evening. But since you’ve demanded it, I think this weekend we will have a bottle of 1982 Chateau Leoville Barton. Tomorrow is my wife Jane’s birthday, so we’ll have whatever she wants (of course). 🙂

    Gary (et al)-

Check out the results of a similar experiment I ran this past weekend to test whether refrigerating an open bottle of wine controlled oxidation better than corking it on the counter. The experiment was pretty close to double-blind and was absolutely single-blind to half a dozen participants.

Gary, killer episode…I often wondered if an episode like this would find it’s way to the site. I will be past a MAJOR project in my Social Work class this weekend and cooking a killer dinner for a fellow wine lover…so on the chopping block and her choice is…good call to open something special this weekend.

    1995 Boisrenard Châteauneuf-du-Pape
    2002 El Nido El Nido
2003 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir The Beaux Frères Vineyard
and for desert it will be either
    1927 Pedro Ximènez Solera
2005 Two Hands: For Love or Money

I’ve found that the Pillar Box Red develops a lot more character 24-48 hours after being opened up. I’ve tried this with several wines with interesting results.

    QOTD: 2005 Amon Ra

    Hey Gary-

Sounds like this wine is tastes like a Banana getting an acupuncture treatment with rusty nail. Additionally, the Banana is laying on a cool bed of aluminum sprinkled with a bit of terrior and covering itself with a bacon towel! Yet, what is important is that it seems that this Banana is really enjoying it’s treatment, melting away from the peal into a smooth, silky, charming body of elegance and class. One might think that a Banana in a bacon towel, stuck with rusty nails this is a contradiction, but not if you knew him!

QotD- I’m making my fiance an italian dinner on Sat. night and cracking a bottle of 2001 Sassicia!

Hmmm…I was cracking up when u mentioned you were singing a Lionel Ritchie – but how could you regress to Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend”? :-))

QOTD: Not sure which wine I will drink, if any, as I have to write a very special paper for Anatomy and Phys this weekend :-(. But after May 4th…its ON!

    Hi Gary
I have found that some lighter and older reds tend to go off quicker. It is really hard to tell exactly how a wine is going to
last once opened. Some last for a week and some are vinegar the next day, and it does not seem to have anything to
do with the quality, just the individual wine.

great wine this weekend..2001 Pear Ripple. decanted of course..
    just kidding.
Will be drinking a Delightful Don Melchor

Ok I have seen lighter reds like cheap Pinot Noirs and Chiantis go south in a couple of days, but most well found, quality wines seem to last up to three days and some younger ones get better for sure. Great episode. Funny that you didn’t notice much difference in decanting becuase I usually sense significant differences in wines over the first half hour of opening. Probably varies wine to wine somewhat.

QOD Because you insisted I will pull out a 2001 Signorello Napa Cab. I may decant it for an hour!
