Great episode! This is just the sort of ep I prefer. Ranks up there w/ ep77 (vintages) & ep111 (glasses) in my book. Thanks!

Though I must say, I think the wines would not have been so similar to each other if you’d chosen a massive young French wine. My experience, however meager, has shown me that some of those puppies can hardly be enjoyed on the first day after opening. They just need WAY more time. And the difference between the harshness I get at first and the elegence that eventually shows up is MASSIVE, to say the least.

QOTD: Earlier this week was my first anniversary w/ my girlfriend, so I popped the best thing I had, the 1999 Pierre Morlet Millesime. It really blew our minds. For this weekend’s challenge I’ll either open the 2000 Leeuwin Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon, or the 2004 Les Verrieres De Montagnac Clos Des Soutyeres Coteaux Du Languedoc. Thanks for insisting that we open something nice. I probably wouldn’t touch these otherwise. I have a hard time opening anything that’s no longer available, especially if it’s really good.

Thanks for doing this – real useful info. I feel that a lot of the effectiveness of any of these methods is very wine (maybe even bottle) dependent.

QOTD: 1999 Pierre Amadieu Gigondas Romane Machotte (Rhone), maybe. I’m too young (and too poor) to have anything all that impressive in the wings. We’ll see anyway, busy weekend ahead… but there’s always time for a glass.

Another useful show, G. I am always concerne about leaving wine open for two long afraid it will spoil. Maybe I will chill a bit about it. I do however agree with wildebeest that certain wines last longer than others on the counter.

QOTD: 2003 Château d’Armailhac – I haven’t had it yet, but we are pumped about trying it.

Another topic: Did you see that video that the shooter at VT made and sent to CNN or CBS? Jesus christ….what a nut.

Good episode. QOTD: working all weekend, but 2 days ago- for flaca’s B-day- drank 2003 Flor de Pingus. (In Flaca’s slang that means penis flower)

  • tomavino

Great educational show, always wondered, but it would had been a waste of wine and money to try to do it on my own, thanks for taking on the challenge.

    QOTD: 1973 Mad Dog 20/20

I liked the episode. I wonder if there would be a more profound difference in a slightly less expensive or a lightly less well made wine. Something I may have to try sometime. This is probably old news, and I must have simply just forgotten it or I missed the episode, but how do I get those awesome wristbands? Have a good one Gary, and look forward to the next show!

Great idea for this episode. Wine is very tough. In the spirit of Stevo’s video maybe you should bring Lizzy on for a show?
QOTD….my niece’s 3rd BD party is the weekend so I’m planning on bringing a nice bottle for the adults. Life is way too short to be taken for granted. I plan on enjoying the whole weekend with the family.

BTW regarding my comment #111 I meant to taste wine, not do what Stevo did….just to clarify.

I really liked the concept behind todayâ??s show. This is something I have always wanted to try also but I didnâ??t want to have that many of the same wine open. It would be a good idea for a wine tasting party. If anything, this episode showed that wine is more durable than people usually give it credit for. As I said in my comments yesterday, I am going to have to seek out the Kanonkop particularly since my previous experiences with Pinotage have not been so positive.

QOTD: #1) On Saturday I am going to open up a 2004 Loring Llama Farm Pinot with a cassoulet that I am making that will be made using duck confit that I also made. #2) Iâ??m planning on grilling some NY Strips on Sunday and am going to open up a Cabernet from one of my favorite producers, a 1997 David Arthur Elevation 1147 â?? I canâ??t wait

no special wine for me this weekend, got a bad cold

i would like to see you repeat this with an older wine….let’s say a 99 Barolo or 95 or 98 Bordeaux or even a Rioja….

Love the Pinotage . Great EP Gary . Getting to appreciate the pinotage variety.
QOTD— The weather is supposed to be great this weekend in the Carolinas — so how about 1999 Meriwether Brut Rose Prestige Cuvee enjoyed on the porch before during and after dinner.

    Cheers & Enjoy

Hey Gary…I agree that this was a cool, educational episode. I was intrigued by the additional flavors/aromas that were picked up by the bottle opened overnight. Mmmmmmm BACON.

QOTD: Maybe that Massena 11th Hour Shiraz you recommended for me, or a Brown Estate Zin.

    Hmmmm,

I do need to open something nice this weekend. I haven’t had anything really outstanding in a while. I’m definitely going to open a 2004 Ramey Hyde Vineyard Chard. I had it a few weeks ago and its outstanding…..tons of butterscotch, caramel, apple, lychee, and lemon. I rated it an easy 93 points, then, but believe that its probably better than that. Now, there’s a Chardonnay to put away for 5-7 years.

As far as something nice to pop this weekend. It really depends on what I cook, or where we go out to eat. Hmmmmm, I’ll have to decide between either a Bordeaux ’95 Haut Brion, a Rhone ’90 Chave Hermitage, or Spain ’01 Pingus……..I’m sure I’ll enjoy any of them.

Hopefully that wine will hold me and I won’t have to open another really nice bottle before the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience. ( http://www.nowfe.com ) I’ll be drinking TONS of great wine there.

I’d really like to find some wines from my birth year ( 1979 ) Sadly, it wasn’t really much of a vintage anywhere. Maybe when I have some more money, I’ll splurge on a ’79 Lafleur for $1800. The 1979 Le Pin is also supposedly decent, but it also runs close to $1500. I’ve also heard that Haut Brion and Certan de May were good in ’79, too. Gary, do you have any personal recommendations from ’79? Too bad I wasn’t born in ’78 or ’77. At least then I could buy some great Rhones or ports.

Have a great weekend everyone!……..and post your tasting notes on CT!!!

Susan, I agree with you… Not my kind of humor either.

Good show today! I always think it’s interesting to compare a wine in different stages, but I’d never thought to do it all in one sitting. 😉

QOTD: Probably no special bottles this weekend — Plans for a game night then a small-scale Tom Grant piano concert (at his house!) Looking forward to it…

QOTD:I think I might have a 1996 Bdx from Chat. Simard that I purchase from a competitor of yours that brought them straight from the cellar of the chateau. Not earth-shattering, but, I hope nice. I have been buying wines to put away for a few years, but not all of its mature yet. (Am avoiding the Ridge Montebello Vertical for a future date.)
