Are you still reading comments, GaryVee? I discovered these videos and decided to watch from EP 1! Thanks for the education.
New to wines, so I haven’t yet tried a Barolo.
Read today that cork’d has croaked. LOL! Too bad, but created an account with cellar tracker.

Italian dish…now this is my forte. Anything with Parmigiano Reggiano because no cheese does so many things so well!! The King of all Italian cheeses and to many cheese experts (that’s me) the King of all cheeses. So picture a dish of freshly stuffed porcini mushroom ravioli with a light Bolognese sauce (made with red wine) and some Brunello di Montalcino. There are so many to choose from. Also Vin Santo is a great dessert wine with Biscotti.

Love the show. watch all the time. Don’t leave many comments.
But this is for you. To make you feel better & to be in line for all the free stuff. That’s not the reason I watched the first 250+ episodes though…
I did that because I enjoy watching a guy who’s passionate about something I’m interested in and to see where you’re taking all this – It’s like a “happening” of the old days – the 60’s & 70’s that is. Good luck and you’re doing a great job! john

Barolo is great but really out of reach for most wine drinkers. I have had the same grape Nebbiolo from other areas of the world that was also awesome but at less then a third of the cost of the authenic Piedmonte versions. Is there a poor man’s Barolo?

QOTD – I really enjoy a good polenta, the great aged cheeses, and the authentic Italian pizza’s. Actually one of my favorite meals is to go the the market and pick up fresh bread, meats, and cheeses to create the ultimate Dagwood sandwich to eat alfresco on a park bench with a bottle of Italian wine by my side…

Kick Ass Episode! I’m pretty sure that if I drank nothing but wines made from nebbiolo for the rest of my life, I could be very happy. This episode got me so excited that I almost commented in italian.

Also, I’m fresh out of the CKC crowd, but started watching when I was still in, so thanks for the shout out and I’ll make sure to update my cork’d account.

QOTD: I can’t really name a favorite because my sentiments about nebbiolo also pretty much cover my love of italian food, but I can name couple of standouts from when I was living in Italy. Bistecca alla fiorentina, spaghetti alle vongole (clams), the pumpkin ravioli I had in Mantova, the fillet with truffle sauce I had in Urbino, and the roast lamb that I had at a restaurant in Trastevere, Rome, on Easter Sunday, and I would actually eat any of those with a wine made from nebbiolo.

    Sometimes I really miss Italy.

    GV,
This has to be one of my favorite episodes (and I have seen them all!!!) Barolo is a truly crafted wine, and is Italian “old school”. I can’t wait to visit the Piedmont (in Italy: I’m in NC Piedmont Triad). Anyway, the Massolino sounds like it is a perfect fit for my taste, and the Brovia sounds pretty good too.
But really, Italian food is not your favorite? What are you nuts?
QOTD: Favorite Italian food is an easy one. At the risk of sounding immodest, I make the world’s best eggplant parmigiano (Grandma Rose Lattanzio’s recipe, made with love!). I have paired it with a Sergio Zenato Riserva 2000 Amarone, and it is pretty freakin’ awesome, but I have a feeling it would go great with the Massolino Barolo. A little garlic bread on the side, a nice Caesar salad before. Wow, that’s living. Anytime you are in NC, you are invited!
    JW

PS: For appetizer: Roasted red peppers on ciabatta bread with some extra sharp provolone. Goes with a nice Barbaresco.
For dessert: A JW blue label original: Canoli Ravioli with Hazelnut chocolate sauce.

  • Great show today Gary. I love every time you do barolo. Barolo has fast become my favorite wine over the last year. 2007 I’ve been drinking mostly Italian wines and discovered what a great wine Barolo is – expensive, but great! I usually spend around $50 for them. If I had a place to store them, I’d probably buy some mixed cases. Note to self: build cellar

QOTD: I don’t have a favorite dish. I need to explore more and learn how to cook more – lol

have a great time in S.F. and Greece.

  • Marc

QOTD: Homemade pizza with Barbera D’Alba. With that said, I’ve never had a Barolo or Barbaresco. In fact, unless it’s the aforementioned combination, which I adore, I’m not too much of a fan of the Italian wines I have had.

QOTD; eggplant parm or seafood fra diavolo, can’t go wrong with either. Probably will pop a 97 San Clemente Montepulciano this weekend just thinking about red sauce! Will let you know if the 97 still has staying power.

    Hi Gary,

As we speak I am on my way out to Via Maestra 42, an authentic Italian resturant in Santa Barbara. And for me, one of the best Italian wine pairings I’ve had has to be Felsina Berardenga 97 Chianti Classico with roasted Quail stuffed with saussage – as you have said in the past, Chianti can be a great food wine, but not just any Chianti will do of course, because it is true that there are a lot of bad Chiantis out there.

More from Santa Barbara to come…

i am garret nagle’s friend (and also going to the restaurant he has described)
he has got me hooked to the blog and i am now coming out of lurkerdom.

parpardelle al sugodanatra (egg noodles with duck and wild mushrooms and other stuff. prepared my mother)

paired with whatever chianti my dad had opened for the evening

but, my wine world is changing and soon i’ll be seeking out the perfect pairings for my mother’s meals

I had the best food and wine pairing that I’ve ever had with a Brunello and a steak with a red wine reduction sauce on it, but haven’t loved the Barolo’s as much as Brunello’s.

Favorite Italian dish has to be a home made red sauce with sausage and meatballs on anything.

  • Hey Gary,

It’s funny, my friends and I as we have been watching your show this week have been betting on your rating based on your facial expressions as you taste them. Hilarious! So far, I’m leading the pack on calling um right. Keep up the great work.

GV, Are you and your wife expecting a baby? Is that what the wipe-board countdown has been for? I’m only asking because the more I look at it the squiggle and the circle looks a lot like a sperm hitting an egg to me. If so, mazel tov!

Nice episode today. I am going to give the Massolino a try. I am a sucker for cocoa and raspberries.

QOTD: Angel Hair Marinara with Sausage @ Maggiano’s with Chianti.

BTW – Gary, you are the greatest!

  • Karol

Barolo is a little pricey but I may have to try on a special occassion.

QOTD: Shrimp Farfalle with a Sauvignon Blanc. May not be the best pairing but I like it.
Found Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc to be very good.

    Gary,

Hulk Hogan in those intimate moments? I won’t ask, please don’t tell. NTTAWWT. No mistakenin it, you, sir, are the bomb.

QOTD: Finally something I know about, italian food. I make two huge cauldrens of “gravy” once a month (why two you may ask? My entire family went vegetarian/vegan on me). This whop needs meatballs and sausage and braciole like others need air so I make one “real” one and one vegan friendly (no meat, no cheese…. blapshemy!). I guess I should make more of an effort to pair wine with food, I feel foolish to say other than with cheese I don’t generally wine and dine, and opt for water with a meal. Big pasta eater,(with cold ricotta accompaniment, please), lasagne, osso buco, chicken cacciatore, antipasto, veal marsala (w/prosciutto and tons of ‘rooms) I can go on forever, if I had to pick one we’ll start with fried zucchini, followed by simple spaghetti (al dente) and meatballs, a big salad and lots of crusty italian bread. Peasant food, can’t beat it.

It’s almost disconcerting that this was you’re second time around doing the episode, if you didn’t mention it I wouldn’t have known it.

  • Joe

I’m not even of age to drink and I still love the show. Watch it every day.
