I know this episode is old school and you may not ever see this comment Gary, but I say you take this opportunity to taste the 2006 Turnbull Cab Sauv. I just had it very recently, and it was delicious. It was the first time I had a Turnbull wine. CG gave the 2006 vintage a 91 I think, or maybe even a 92. Think about it GV.

    Enjoy the Viication

Excited to see Turnbull in the lineup – it’s been a fav for years – consistently good, as you point out.

QOTD – I’m probably at the end of the Cab ladder. Been there, left, came back, left again. Revisit occasionaly, for the likes of Turnbull.

Glad to see another Cab show, but, are all you critics joining to bring down CA Cabs? I am sorry, but I disagree with most of you, I’ve been drinking Cabs for over 30 years, and todays CA Cabs are a lot better made, and will last longer than those made a while back, or in places like Chile and the likes. Granted, they are very high priced, and some are over done, but they are still some of the best wines put on a table. I drink all kind of wines in abundance, Cabs are the less I drink, but that is because I let them sit for a long time, and I don’t feel they are ready within 6-10 years of the vintage, that is probably why there is so much negative feelings toward it, is just being drink too young. Why don’t you do a show with 10-15 years old CA Cabs, that can really teach people what Cabs are all about. I am willing to bet that all those wines you rejected today, in 10 years you wouldn’t dare. If you buy wines to drink them right after you buy them, then stay away from Cabs, but if you still go ahead and drink them, then don’t put them down, they weren’t ready, even if you were.

    Gary,

Enjoyed the show and it was nice to see a California Cab that was not overpriced do so well.

How about a selection from the Movia vineyard. I have been reading some very interesting reviews of this winery and the quality of their wines.

Hope all is going well in Greece!

    Cheers!

argggg – Turnbull sold out already.

qotd: funny question. I lived in South America for years and only drank chilean cabs. and you know what, i got so tired of them i thought i didn’t even enjoy wine anymore. now after finding wltv i never drink a cab but am loving other grapes. thinking maybe it’s time to bring the cab back a little tiny bit. but hard to do on a limited budget. turnbull seems like amazing value, but still pricey.

    thanks for the great episode.

    Nice episode,
QOTD: Bottom to a little past middle of the ladder. Always have Cali Cabs around. Sort of like a crutch. Have been exploring a lot of different wines though, but certain meals pair nicely with a cab.

It looks like you’re spilling a little bit of wine each episode. Do they have a mat that it lands on or are you ruining the carpeting in that room?

Whoops, forgot to answer the question.
QOTD: I’m in between Cab right now, and I’ve got this great website to thank. I was afraid to wander outside of the Cab’s secure embrace, but with all the varietals that I get exposed to with this show I’m currently on a kick of trying wine varietals that I’ve never had before. Zins, Sauv Blancs, Soave, Primativo, Rioja … I may return to the Cabs some day, but for now I’m off exploring what’s hiding on those dusty shelves in the back of the liquor stores.

Gary, Great episode. I run a tasting group called Caberent Lovers of New York, CLONYC, so saying I enjoy Cabernet is an understatement. I think the problem of wines like LUNA stem from winemakers meeting demands of aging critics. RP and ST both scoring the LUNA over 90? With all the point chasing going on today many winemakers loose sight. I bet lots get sold at $49 (even sold out) o people who don’t trust their own palate and only find out (if they ever do) that they hate it. A good example from your own lips…the Turnbull, both consistent and sure, but obviously not a point chasing wine, it can please year in and year out. Another problem is winemakers wanting to make agers. The use of oak when used deftly can be pure beauty, but mis-used you get toothpicks on the tonque. The problem lies in the critics and their influence.

There are some smashing wines in the sub $50 range these day for those willing to seek them out. Many more Caberents are leaning toward elegance and finesse today than 5 years ago. Winemakers like Thomas Brown (Rivers-Marie, Chiarello, Maybach, and others) are doing just that and worth seeking out.

Todays Napa Cab style is much more fluid than say Bordeaux, where 98% seek a certain style, like it or not. As the critics get older buyers need to ask themselves; does a 50 year old palate align with theirs? I am 46 and rely on my own palate 100% of the time.

Great job and have a safe trip.

Cabs, OK, but like many of the above, gimme Syrahs, NZ Cabs, Aussie Cabs, Malbec. The core flavor of Cabs is a little too austere for me.

    Qotd:
I’m at the low end of the ladder. Only been drinking wine regularly for a couple of years. The first cab I ever drank was the two buck chuck and I was turned off to cabs immediately. I do drink some of the cab blends of which the 2004 Desert Wind Ruah Columbia is my favorite. My son gave me a bottle of 2003 Salvestrin Napa Valley which I intend to drink this summer.

I’ve never heard of the “ladder” before. I bounce around quite a bit and I haven’t come back to cab in some time.

Chianti to Cab to Pinot to Syrah ………. I’ll be back to cab again soon, I’m sure

    Gary,

I agree, Turnbull has always been a solid wine and the fact that they’ve remain consistant with “market price points” is an outstanding value.

PS Any chance you will bring in the ’06 Mollydooker Wines? ie. (The Boxer,Two Left Feet and The Maitre D)

War: Of Good Wine lacing my palate daily and keeping WLT streaming forever.

QOTD: I’m pretty high on the cab ladder. Although I drink other reds (Brunello di Montalcino, Malbec, et al), I keep on coming back to my good ole cabs, which represent about 80% of my cellar — I include blends or meritage (e.g. Insignia) in the cab category. Thanks for the tip on Turnbull: I was looking for an affordable fine cab

  • QOTD: I like a cab now and again. There are just soooo many other things to try. Besides, it’s summer, and they’re just too heavy right now. I’d rather go with a Zinfandel when it’s hot outside.

  • FredinNYC

…DRATS! The Wine Library is out of Turnbull! It’s available from other merchants for nearly 50 bones.

So much for an “affordable” cab

Enjoyed your review of the upscale Cabs. Had heard of Turnbull but not yet tried it, now I definitely will.

    Keep up the good work.

Nice episode Gary. I love when the least expensive bottle shows up the rest. Can’t wait to try the Turnbull. QOTD – I’m a big fan of Cabs, but have been waiting on my collection to age a little more before really climbing up the ladder. Most youthful Cabs are definitely at a disadvantage to other wines as the tannins and Oak Monster haven’t had enough time to settle down.

  • Wheeew-Whooo! A cab episode!!! Wine Library TV doesn’t get any better than this!

QOTD: Even though I’ve only been into wine for less than a year, I’m at the top of the wine ladder on Cabernet sauvignon. By that I mean that I am trying as many different wines as I can, but I love cabs and will drink one whenever I can. Recently, for example I had a Bordeaux, an Albarino, a vihno verde, a Spanish Sangre de Toro, a Malbec rose, …. Hey, I haven’t had a cab in a while! I’m over due for one tonight!!!

    Nice show.

I started with cab, then got turned off by the expense, and am now migrating back. I ordered a case of 05 bordeau futures from WL and am trying to find some reasonably priced cali cab for this weekend.

Thanks again for taping all the shows. I hope your trip is great.

Well, I posted a comment yesterday, but I guess it didn’t go through. 🙁

Thanks for taking such good care of us Vayniacs while you’re away. Hope you’re having fun!
