Love the battle of the bottle! This is the kind of episode that really teaches you something. QOD: This year is shaping up to be the best so far. My career is finally shaping up to be something I’m totally enthralled with. I’ve never been more happily in love and now we’re planning a wedding! This year I’ll be moving back to NY to be closer again with my family and friends and I can’t wait. I’ve learned so much about life and love. Financially, this year is promising to bring the largest year-end gross I’ve ever seen, and it’s allowing me to take pleasure in the finer things, lots of golf, food, and wine! Only good things to come.

This was a grrreeeeaaat episode, I love this sort of direct comparison. Surprised that the difference was so pronounced.

QOTD – Best year in my life? It’s a tie between 1997 and 2007 – 1997 was when I moved into my first (and so far only) house with my new family and it felt that I had matured and was now living for real. 2007 is where I have BOTH experience to appreciate life’s little pleasures AND enough disposable income buy some of them.

Man I recently bought a bunch of Ruffino, now I have to go home to see it was the ’03 vintage. QOTD – probably 1983 my first year of college with getting out of the house away from the parents.

I’m a chianti fan. so this was a very interesting episode……..

QOTD: For me, the college years of 62-64 are hard to beat. Being on your own, away from home with little responsibilities, except working hard for an education and having a good time along with it.

  • IanY

Great episode, really was interesting to see the diffence in the wines. (Should we all break out into ‘What a difference a day makes’?)

I’ve tried the riserva ducale oro and I hated it. I drink primarily chianti and super-tuscans so I was surprised at how bad it was, especially with that price. QOTD: 1994 it was seventh grade and I just had a ton of fun, it was really the last year I didn’t have alot of responsibilities.

I praise anyone who has the patience to wade through the intricacies of a non-blended Chianti. Of course, Gary gets the most praise since he gets to bathe in it whenever he likes. To me, a ‘classic, new Chianti is like drinking a mouthful of dark chocolate melted in a pot of jet fuel and subsequently filtered through a dirty gym sock.

    Lovely.

    Lurker status no more..

Great compare, I would have to agree on age difference, I couldn’t get enough of the 2003 Fetzer Cab Sau, then ran out. (boo woo) so I tried the 2004 and WOW! I couldn’t believe the difference. Sorry to say it’s not in the cellar.

QOTD: I have to say, every moment I’m alive with loved ones and good health. With the bills paid and a little something in my pocket, oh yea! and a nice glass of wine in my hand, is the best day to always cherish.

    Happy Travels,

Chianti to me is very, how can i say this, i dont know the last one i had was given to me in a small styrofoam cup (yes i know the injustice) its was extremlybitter really to me it was undrinkable, but it just couldve been the cup. and lastly my best year was 2005-2006 wine galore through that time.

“i had his liver with some farver beans and a nice chianti…” as a plus i qouted hanibal lecture on his tasting note on chianti.

    Good Chianti….

The only two Chiantis I’ve had and enjoyed a lot have to be the 2000 Carpineto Chianti Classico Riserva, and the 1997 Felsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva.

That being said, they are great food wines, although I’ve been leaning more towards the Super Tuscan style bordeaux blends in the realm of Italian wine.

  • portland guy

oh yes, QOTHD — Y2K! Great year for great trekking trips, from Costa Rica to Nepal. Love going into thin air. On the downside, it was the year that a complete dooooooofus became prez – without even being elected. That caca head almost screwed up a near-perfect year.

Good stuff, Gary. Nice to see how two different vintage Chianti’s stack up against each other. 🙂

  • I have 4 Ruffino in my cellar that I’m looking forward to trying.
Favorite age was 10, which was 1985-86…Did everything first when 10, my first make-out, cigarette, fight, and got my first pair of rollarblades all the things you can’t forget. I actually had a 1986 Simi Reserva last night “excellent”

This year is my best so far. Is that the right answer? Keep eating those cheerios.
