This year is my best so far. Is that the right answer? Keep eating those cheerios.

2004 was me best year, I’m kinda remembering very well tonight because I’ll go to see the Beach Boys live 🙂 can’t wait…

  • Gary,

Yeah, I can tell you’re getting punchy after so many of these episodes taped back to back. I know for a fact you survived it, because you seemed chipper enough in SF at the Vayniac party.

QOD: It’s human nature to say that some year in the past was the best ever, but then it traps you into the mindset that things will never be better than back then. I have a real problem with that. So I’m going to say that right NOW is a pretty damn good year, and what’s more, if you ask me the same question next year, I’ll tell you the same answer (that is, “right NOW is a pretty damn good year”.)

I could say 1993, the year I got married; but in all honesty I think its 2007. So far this year things have been good. I don’t remember being happier.

A very well timed ep GV, thanks. I was drinking a glass of Chianti the other night and enjoying it but thinking that Chianti always tastes very samey same to me. I wrote it off as my lack of experience with it and you just confirmed that for me.

Last year (my 36th) was my best year yet; got married, went to Hawaii, World Cup year, stumbled on to a weird video blog about wine. All in all a very good year.

QOTD: When I was younger I always thought that getting older was going to be a drag but so far my years keep getting better and better. As I got married last year I am going to have to go with it for now. 🙂

I’m admittedly a lurker coming out of the shadows…Good episode Gary. Nice to see some very widely accessible wines reviewed. I had a 1997 Ruffino Gold that I actually brought back from Florence, Italy this past year. It was pretty tasty…curious how it would stack up to the 99.

  • The summer of 69 when i got my first set of six strings……… wa waa lame-o no seriously probably the early Renaissance was the best years, oh ya and year 0 or when I was first born.

  • JonC

…Also a lurker no more. I had some great ’97 Chianti Classico, but haven’t had Chianti in quite a while just because there are always more wines to try than I have time to drink.

I’ve been married 30 years this year. It just keeps getting better, so I have to go with the group that says this is the best year.

Congrats on the cholesterol. Keep living healthy so we can get your unique take on life & wine for years to come.

QOTD:1969 i pitched a perfect season in little league 6-0 in the regular season, 3-0 in the play offs, and the championship + the all-star game.but the present is ALWAYS the best

QOTD: 2006 was pretty awesome. I spent half of it living in Rome, where I fell in love with wine, traveled all over Italy, where I drank more wine, went to the Olympics where I found out about nebbiolo in a Torino Restaurant, finally got out of a relationship with a lunatic, and started my senior thesis.

I’ve got to agree with Randy, Right now is a pretty damn good time, You can’t look at the past and relive all those high school glory days, and think nothing will ever beat the time I scored four touchdowns in highschool at Polk high.

This year is pretty good so far. Having said that 1985 was also a great year. Moved away from home to the other side of the country for the first time and began adulthood. Learned to spread my wings as they say.

dude – i know you are in Greece but do you believe i could not a left-coaster to split a case of the 99 Ducale and take advantage of the FS???

QotD: my best years were surgical residency in Alabama. 1987-92.

qotd: i’m lucky enough to say i’ve had a lot of great years. i’d have to say 99 sticks out in my mind. then ’04 was pretty amazing. and of course the whole ~78-95 was amazing when my grandparents were all around. so i guess i’m not having many ‘off vintages’!

Very timely episode, Gary. I have a couple bottles of the 1999 Ducale Oro in the cellar that I was planning to drink this Sunday. We’re doing a big Italian feast to celebrate the final episode of The Sopranos, and what better wine to go with than the one Tony’s always drinking (Ruffino Gold) from the year the show started (1999). Glad to hear it’s a quality quaff.

As for QOTD … hard to choose. 1997 probably – got married, bought my first house and watched my Red Wings win their first Stanley Cup of my life time. Coming in a close second is 2000, with the birth of my first kid.

QOTD; All of the years have been excellent, I love life, and time is our most precious asset , which is seriously limited, (life is short). The best years were probably 84-88, I didn’t know or understand wine at that point in my life, but I had a blast in my early 20’s. For me its always been, I do the necessary evil, “work”, and then its time to enjoy life, and most of all have fun!

7:53 seconds..shortest episode I’ve seen. Gotta give it to GV, he looks determined to go all the way through with this. He loves the fans.

My guess is that by the time we hit the last of these vacation spots, that shirt will be full of wine stains, and he will pass out in a 20 second episode.
