A dumb Rhein king

haha, give the oak monster shirts props one day and then complain about them the next 😀

QOTD: I don't know if I can remember what I had in 2007, but this week I had a Greek Moschofilero by Boutari. It was very good. The worst wine was a cab from Cavas Submarinas. It tasted like wet musty cardboard. It could be TCA even though the cork was synthetic.

    Greetings Mr V!
I proselytize the non-wine drinking heathens in my neck of the woods as often as humanly possible… good to see you looking a bit less miffled.

    Question of the Day:
    Best: 2000 Paraduxx
Best surprise: 2005 Altos de la hoya
Worst surprise: sweet, oaky Cali chardonnay @ a cookout
Worst: Lost Vineyards Malbec/Bonarda… same event

QOTD: best red: Chateau Roland La Garde 2005 Prestige Bordeaux
best white: Domaine de la Quilla lur lie Muscadet
worst red: a corked cotes de luberon
    worst white: Nobilo sauvignon blanc

I also had a really good one called Truth Lindsey’s Cuvee that I guess is
a small production cult wine. Very good if any of you come across it you
    should try it.

  • BruceP

QOTD: Domaine du Grand Veneur 05 Cote du Rhone Villages. Unbelievable value. Tasted as good as a +$30 CDP. Rushed out and bought some of their 05 CDP as well. I figured if the cheap one as that good, then the CDP should be fantastic.

Gary…Nice to have you back, and enjoyed meeting you in SF 2 weeks back. A good party.

Would love to see a powerhouse pinot showdown . . . Kosta Browne, Sea Smoke and perhaps a really nice Burgundy???

  • Adam

    Hey Gary,

    Good to have you back!

Best Wine: 2004 Maison Latour Pinot Noir Vin de Pays des Coteaux du Verdon Domaine de Valmoissine

Worst: My buddies first attempt to make wine,if you can call it that.

Any news on a Northeast party? I’m more than happy to help organize something! Let me know.

QOTD: Best wine – 2004 Montebruno Pinot Noir

Worst wine – my 2005 Zinfandel/Cab blend – bottled 5 months ago, and hoping, hoping for some bottle development – please. I have 65 bottles left …

  • KenP

Welcome back, GV. Really missed ya! Thanks for showing the SF glass. And the shout out.
QOTD: I’ll have to think about it.

    Welcome back!!

    1) Keep the show as long as you like. It’s your show. Some of the best episodes have been 20+ minutes. Do what works for the wines/theme of the day.

    2) $4.30 and a PAZZZZZZZ but a score of 87??? You were clearly underwhelmed by all three and yet 89, 88, 87??? I’m confused. Those are pretty close to “90 – oustanding wine.” Your mouth said 89, 88, 87; your FACE/body language/description said 86, 83, and 78.

    QOTD: Best – Tissot NV Brut Rose;
Worst – sterling cab sauv. (served by hotel at a conference I was at)

QOTD: The best was the Domaine De La Garrigue Cotes Du Rhone Cuvee Romaine that you did a while back. Really enjoyed it.
The worst? The Naked Grape Shiraz. Their slogan is “It takes confidence to go unoaked.” Just really bad.

Welcome back! We all missed you. Glad to see you energized by your trip!
Also, thanks for tastking some higherpriced pinots. I refuse to bite the bullet and try any pinot noir without tasting notes. . .it’s just so hit or miss with that grape lately.

Best wine I had in the last two weeks was, well, Domaine Ste Michelle frizzante. I haven’t been drinking much great wine lately.
The worst I had was Sterling Merlot 2003. At $19 it was SERIOUS pass. I was bummed. I hate it when I spend that much and get a dud.

  • It seems corkd.com is down and this page can’t get to the stylesheet at http://corkd.com/css/screen.css So now tv.winelibrary.com looks like butt!

Anyway! Come on Gary! I’ve blogged on winelibrary like 4 times now 😛

QOTD: Best: Cloud9 Seity, CA (tasted it with a customer and they bought it, brought the rest home)
Worst: Greggo Grenache (can’t figure out that what it tasted like…just blah, like your last bottle)

    Welcome back Gary!

QOTD- Best was the 2004 Vietti Barbera D’Alba Tre Vigne. A winner! Worst was the 2005 Castano Monastrell which was not terrible, just not good.

Nice to see ya again. Best wine I had was a 1985 Chateau Margaux. Worst was, huh, I can’t recall a bad wine in the last two weeks. Must have blanked it from my memory.

  • QOD: Best wine would have to be the ’99 Lake Sonoma Winery Cabernet I tasted for the radio show this last Monday (smooth as silk, excellent), worst wine would be the ’04 Tempranillo I tasted at Imagery Estate Winery last Sunday (all tannins, couldn’t taste anything but tannins with more tannins mixed in).

Best wine of the last few weeks: a 1995 Chateau de Pez I wasn’t expecting much from. Very pleasant surprise. Honorable mention to the ’04 Chave Mon Coeur, although it didn’t so much blow me away as fit seamlessly and unobtrusively into my evening.

Worst: Cerejeiras 2005 from Estremadura, Portugal … I don’t mind dirty, but this was too dirty even for me, and green in a bad way. I suppose all the cheap Portuguese reds can’t be homeruns.

  • mbannon

Welcome home GV!! I noticed the improved lighting right away.

I’m not surprised by your Argyle notes, the 2004 vintage has been pretty spotty. ’05 is even worse. And I shed several tears whenever I think back a few years to the days when Argyle wines were in the $20 range. Sigh…

QOD – Best was a ’97 Stonestreet Legacy Cab, served with grilled steak to celebrate competing in my first Olympic-distance triathlon. I was so tired it was almost an effort to finish my glass of wine!

    QOTD:
BEST was one Gary recommended: 2004 Turnbull cab. Loved it!
WORST: 2003 Cahors Clos Sigier (since I love Argentinian Malbec, I thought I would like this Cahors, but it tasted totally different: I couldn’t have identified the grape or varietal in a blind tasting). Hated it!
