A dumb Rhein king

haha, give the oak monster shirts props one day and then complain about them the next 😀

QOTD: I don't know if I can remember what I had in 2007, but this week I had a Greek Moschofilero by Boutari. It was very good. The worst wine was a cab from Cavas Submarinas. It tasted like wet musty cardboard. It could be TCA even though the cork was synthetic.

    Glad you are back.

Best Wine = ’97 Staglin purchased the day my son was born

Worst Wine = The Hermit Crab, however, much better day two.

Welcome back, Gary! Glad you had a nice trip. No one reads my blog, but there’s a link to WLTV on it, anyway. QOTD: Haven’t tried too many new wines in the past couple of weeks, but the best I’ve had in that time is Bonny Doon Pacific Rim Riesling, which has become on of my ‘all-purpose’ whites so far this summer. Can’t think of any really bad ones I’ve had in awhile.

hey, I saw you on a rerun of Uncorked with Mike Merrill, very cool episode! We are definitely going to drive out there one day to check the WL out!!!

Great to have you back! A bunch of pirates hijacked the signal yesterday and it was ugly….. seriously though you’re right about the first episode goes to show it’s not as easy as you make it look. Kudos to the crew in allowing you to do your thing while they do theirs.

Alas, no blog I have a hard enough time absorbing all the info available let alone providing content. However, I do think you’re shockingly good looking, imaginative, very charismatic and wonderful with the wines but what do I know?

Best: Kilikanoon Killerman’s Run Shiraz 2004 – yummy

Worst: Shoofly Aussie Salute 2005 – fake fruit city – Shoofly don’t bother me ever again!

So delighted that you are back Gary. You are such a terrific salesman I almost went and purchased about $300 worth of T-Shirts! However, sanity finally came to me and the realization that I haven’t worn a T-Shirt out of the house in about 15 years! Need some collared shirts. Really so happy you are back! QOTD, I have only had one wine in the last two weeks 🙁 , a German Riesling, not bad, not great.

  • Susan

    QOTD:
    2006 Mulderbosch Cab. Sauvignon Rose.
    🙂

First of all, welcome back. You look well rested and ready to taste some good wines though unfortunately, none of them filled the bill tonight.

QOTD: Best = 2004 Haywood Rocky Terrace Zin (hands down the best and ordered some more) though the 75 Cab was pretty good: Worst = Grosset Riesling (not crazy about it)

  • Gary, welcome back – where’s the beard, where’s the personal guard? (sorry for the Star Trek quote) Anyway, the family were all a bit disappointed when you didn’t show yesterday, but we’re back on track now. Can’t wait to order tshirts!

QOTD: Hermanos Lurton Rueda – Nice. Worst – hmmm, does beer count?

BTW – my blog Wine Skeptic http://www.wineskeptic.com – exists now only to praise WLTV, so there’s something to boost the Google score, as if you needed it…. but it saves me having to write reviews and stuff…

Show too long? I think not. The longer the better. Best in last 2 weeks= a tie between an Arrowood 2002 Cab, and a Turnbull 2000 Cab. Worst? Believe it or not, haven’t had a bad bottle in the last 2 weeks so can’t make a call on that one…

I like it when episodes are longer. I definitely get disappointed some days when I’m ready to sit down and watch WLTV and it’s only a 10 or 11 minute episode. Closer to 20 minutes is definitely in my taste.

QOTD: Go to my corked’ page and check out my review of the 2004 El Nido “Clio” it was jaw-dropping. I tasted through the Jorge Ordonez profile the other day and it was like someone sent me to the Miss USA pagent to pick out a date….they were all beautiful wines to some extent. However, on the flip side of that coin. I was completely dissapointed by the 2002 Clos de L’Orbac. Anytime a wine is over $60 and doesn’t hit in the 90’s (for me) I wonder where the moneys really going to. Great to have you back and feel free to check out my corked’ page http://corkd.com/people/slave2thevine/journal

    Hi Gary,

    Do so love your show!

Best: Scali Syrah 2003, Voor-Paardeberg, South Africa. A dark smokey depth, that is nearly beyond words.

Worst: Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio (I broke down and tried it, possibly the most over-priced wine I’ve encountered in 10 years in the wine biz).

PS- Please tell me that you were just jet-lagged and that you do know that Syrah is not a Bordeaux varietal?

  • Hey GV
Nice to have you back, “live” and in color.

QOTD: We have been drinking a bit of everything lately mostly reds none of which I can complain about, but the one thing that sticks out in the past weeks is the Hess Select Small Block Mt. Veeder Chardonnay that I had last week. It had been a while since I had a reaaallly good Chardonnay and this was it. Check out my review on Cork’d. Red’s of note, Marquis Philips, 04 Shiraz, some great value Castle Rock wines, a great Riesling from Pflaz.

    Good to have ya back.

Best: 2003 Nickel & Nickel Syrah Dyer Vineyard (USA, California, Napa Valley, Carneros)
Worst: 2005 Leasingham Riesling Bin 7 (Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley)

  • Doc Dan

Welcome home BRO! I actually tried a Fiddlestix Pinot, but a differnt vintage. It was a decent wine. QOTD: Best wine: Caymus 1994 Cab, Worst: Joseph Phelps Le Mistral

Oh man I am full and tired. I just came back from a small dinner/tasting featuring Robert Mondavi wines. So the best one I’d have to say is the Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 1997, but the ’03 was right behind it. The best white was the Robert Mondavi Moscato D’Oro 2004 for dessert. The wine and food pairings for the night were great. I need to sleep now.

QOTD: Tough call. Either the 2004 Domaine La Barroche Reserve CdP or the 1974 Chateau Beychevelle. Very different wines enjoyed for very different reasons. BTW, neither wine was “dirty” nor were they “bombs”.

  • Dave-from-Katonah

    Gary V-

Welcome back! You look well rested and tan. Hope you and Liz had a good rest and visited Santorini. Did you have any good Greek wines??

As far as spreading the word – Dude! That’s all I do! Remember the anesthesiologist at the Harrison seder??? I’m getting all my wine geek friends to check out wltv and they’re all buying from wl!!! So, I am doing my part, let me assure you.

Still a little bummed about the lack of help with the wine selections for my daughter’s bat mitzvah this Saturday…understanding the vaca plans and all…but maybe if you check my last e-mail, you wouldn’t mind commenting on my picks?? Would love to see what you think of my budget-conscious picks. I know you’re a busy guy and all…but I think I did my homework and just wondered what you thought…

QOTD – the 2003 Finca Sandoval tonight was terrific, but that 2003 Guigal Cotie Rote on Memorial Day w/e was pretty darn good!! Syrah fan that I am, what else would I choose? Have had no “worst wines” since i started following the guidelines presented on wltv!!! Thank you very much! (Elvis)
